CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

Just when Eleanor believed she had suffered enough embarrassment just that morning to last her a lifetime, being mistaken for her father's pregnant girlfriend nearly killed her. She couldn't help the nervous giggle that escaped from her while Remus appeared absolutely mortified. Quickly, Remus shook his head and waved his hand in a panic.

"No, Dad, this is my daughter," Remus pointed to her, "this is Eleanor."

Lyall didn't appear upset but rather confused as he continued to look at Eleanor, rather than his son. "You have a daughter? Since when?!"

"A little over sixteen years," Eleanor answered, "it's nice to meet you."

As any person would after being delivered such news in an abrupt manner, Lyall was clearly in disbelief, but it was incredibly hard for him to ignore the resemblance that Eleanor shared to his late wife. There were subtle differences that he picked up on the longer he looked, the girl before him being much taller than Hope and her hair was much longer than Hope had ever bothered to keep it. Her nose was shaped slightly different, a little narrower, but as Eleanor smiled at him, the way the corners of her eyes creased in just the slightest, it was like having Hope smile at him again.

A smile that he missed greatly over the years.

"How can this be, Remus?" Lyall questioned, finally tearing his gaze away from Eleanor and looking back at him. "Sixteen years and you're only mentioning it now? If haven't just recently adopted, you're telling me that biologically this is your child? How do you know?"

"Dad, I'll explain everything in due time, but for now, Ellie has been rather excited about meeting you. She wanted to come here and spend some time with you."

Remus seemed nervous that Lyall was about to lose his mind and tell them to get out or something of the sort. Even though Lyall was far from a man that would do such a thing, the longer the three of them stood in silence, Remus was unsure of how Lyall was going to take to the news of being a grandfather, especially since it had been so long since Remus had last visited, leaving their relationship somewhat strained over the years.

However, as Lyall took a step towards Eleanor, a smile finally formed as suddenly, pushed Remus aside and pulled her into a hug. Remus almost fell over as he lost balance from his father's sudden gesture, but he could only bring himself to laugh as Lyall appeared to be squeezing the life out of Eleanor.

"Oh! I can't believe it! I'm a grandfather!" he cried happily as Eleanor remained positively stunned in his arms. "And she took after our side of the family! I couldn't be happier. She's adorable but so grown up at the same time! I'd never thought I would see the day, Remus. A day where you announced I had a grandchild!"

"Thanks, Dad."

"But look, you made a beautiful young lady."

With the compliment of being called adorable and beautiful, Eleanor decided that she and her grandfather were going to get along just fine. She found the courage to wrap her arms around him in a hug, thankful that things were continuing to run smoothly. She didn't remember a lot about her maternal grandparents, but she couldn't recall ever having any good ones, not even something as simple as them holding her in a hug.

Her grandfather had passed away before her grandmother, but even then, Eleanor didn't think they were very nice people. After all, she remembered that Margaret had not attended her own mother's funeral when she finally passed on, but Eleanor never ventured to ask why. Now, not only did she have the chance to bond with her father, but she had the chance to develop a relationship with a grandparent.

It was only the second day of the summer holiday and Eleanor was deeming it to be pretty successful.

As Lyall continued to gush over her, asking a million questions that he didn't wait to hear the answers to, the moment was interrupted by Margaret finally knocking on the already open door. In the midst of the chaotic introduction, Remus and Eleanor had forgotten all about her trying to recover outside from their Apparating trip. She appeared fine, although surprised by the scene of Lyall hugging Eleanor.

"I hope I'm not intruding," Margaret said with a slight wave of her hand. "I wasn't sure if you wanted me to wait outside or- "

Remus made his way over to welcome Margaret inside while Lyall loosened his hold on Eleanor, the confusion returning to his expression.

"That's my mum," Eleanor whispered to him, "Margaret."

Within seconds, Lyall let out a happy laugh as he motioned Margaret over into a hug as well.

"The more the merrier!"

No one understood just how thrilled Lyall was to just have a visit from his son, but to discover that he had a granddaughter, he was beside himself. And he was blessed to meet the mother of his grandchild, who turned out to be incredibly kind. But it was incredible to see Remus actually smile and look happy. It had been years since Lyall witnessed a genuine smile on his son's face, and he hated to see Remus struggle whether it was emotionally or financially. However, there was little the father could do when Remus often refused help, too often labelling himself as a burden.

Lyall wished there was a way for Remus to see himself in a better light and perhaps the prospect of being an involved father in Eleanor's life, maybe he would be more willing to accept help, not only for his sake but for Eleanor's as well. And while Eleanor's resemblance to Hope was plenty of evidence, Lyall still wanted to hear the story as to how Remus had suddenly become a father overnight.

He decided to hand Eleanor and Margaret the distraction of a family photo album while he called Remus into the kitchen to help him fix tea for everyone. Remus was about to remind his father that he had a wand until Lyall grabbed him by the back of the collar and dragged him out of the room.

Lyall wasn't sure what story he was expecting Remus to tell, but perhaps the story of his son's one-night stand resulting in a child wasn't the story for them to start off on after months of not talking to one another.

About ten minutes later, Eleanor looked over her shoulder, wondering where Remus and Lyall had really gone, thinking that it didn't take long for two wizards to prepare tea. But as she did, she saw Lyall walking out of the kitchen with two teacups in hand, his face rather paled and his eyes looked wide in shock. Remus came out behind him, looking rather stressed as he carried another set of cups. Eleanor could only assume that Lyall had learned the truth behind Remus' sudden family.

"Uh Margaret," Remus called out to her, his voice cracking slightly, "would you like to see the rest of the house?"

Margaret looked to Eleanor first to make sure she would be comfortable being on her own with Lyall and Eleanor reassured her with a small nod and a smile. Pushing herself up, Margaret took the cup of tea that Remus offered her before they walked out, leaving Eleanor with her grandfather. She, too, was offered her own cup of tea as Lyall took to sitting next to her.

"Are you alright, Grandpa?" she asked him, noting how his hands were shaking slightly causing his teacup to rattle. She placed her hands under his to keep the tea from spilling over and burning one or both of them.

The cup nearly tilted over as she called him "Grandpa" causing Eleanor to turn red.

"I'm sorry!" she exclaimed, placing her own teacup down before taking his, and placing it on the table. "I wasn't thinking, I should have asked! I- "

"Don't you dare apologise to me," Lyall scolded her, "if you want to call me Grandpa, you call me Grandpa. I just didn't think that you would want to call me Grandpa so soon. I haven't been involved in your life at all up until this moment."

"Well, I haven't been involved in yours either," Eleanor countered, "so can we call it even?"

With a laugh, Lyall agreed as he brought Eleanor into a side hug. The two peered down at the photo album that was open in her lap and he could see that it was opened to the photograph of his and Hope's wedding. The couple was posed, cutting into the wedding cake, with bright smiles. Hope wore a long-sleeved dress of lace with a traditional veil trailing behind her, her brown hair was tucked behind an ornate flower crown. Of course, Lyall was wearing formal wizarding robes, showing a lovely union of magic and muggle in one photo.

"She was really beautiful," Eleanor said softly, "she looks so happy. But what's that on the top of the cake? Are those mushrooms?"

"Funny story about that," Lyall said, "in order for it to make sense, I'd have to tell you the story of how your grandmother and I met. I was out in Wales, where there had been reports of a nasty boggart lurking in the woodlands. Just so happens that when I arrive, I hear a scream, and so I'm running through his dense forest, and I come upon your grandmother. At the time, she was working for this small muggle insurance company in Cardiff. I guess she fancied a walk through the woods, and it was just her luck that she stumbled upon the boggart. It was my luck too."

Eleanor continued to listen as Lyall told her that the boggart had taken on the appearance of a large and vicious-looking man. Lyall had no other choice but to turn the boggart into a field of mushrooms and noting that she was visibly shaken by the encounter, he walked her home.

"Months later, we had been dating for quite some time, and I decided to tell her that it was a boggart," Lyall told her, "she was never in any real danger. Felt like a bit of a bastard at that point, but she didn't care in the slightest. Shortly afterwards, I proposed to her and she accepted. She started planning right away and her friends were talking about the wedding cake topper, but she insisted on the mushrooms. No one else understood it besides us, but we didn't mind. Merlin, bless her soul, she was an amazing woman."

While it was a beautiful story, Eleanor could detect the same sadness in Lyall's voice that she heard when Remus spoke about his mother. It may have been years since her passing, but the pain still seemed quite fresh. Not wishing to end the conversation on an awkward note, Eleanor reached for her cup of tea and took a small sip.

"Dad told me that she liked to knit," she began, "I knit too!"

"You do?"

"Yes! Do you want to see some of my work?"

"Yes!"

Meanwhile, the house tour that Remus had invited Margaret on, was mostly an opportunity for his father to process the truth. He figured it would be easier for Lyall to work through things in Eleanor's presence. And he didn't want Margaret to suffer through the awkwardness, bringing her upstairs to his old bedroom.

He watched as she walked around his room with a curious tilt of her head as her eyes scanned over the moving photos on his walls. Her fingers trailed over several of them, watching as either a young Remus or his parents moved about. However, there was a gap where a photo had been ripped down at one point, and Margaret's fingers traced over the scratch marks that had once been hidden underneath before she looked over in his direction.

"Remus, if me being here is too much, I don't mind going home and allowing you and Eleanor to visit," Margaret told him. "I'd hate for things to feel awkward because of my presence."

Remus let out a small chuckle before sitting in the middle of his bed, a small cloud of dust swirled into the air. "Whether you were here or not, it was always going to be awkward, Margaret. I don't think it's an easy conversation to tell someone that they're a grandfather and for them to find out that their granddaughter is already sixteen years old."

"Well, he doesn't blame you, does he?" she asked. "You didn't know about Eleanor and with your condition- "

"He understands my reasoning and the circumstances," he said, "but that doesn't excuse me from the blame. Eleanor was right, leaving you wasn't the right thing to do, not getting into contact with you after all this time, wasn't the right thing to do. I was too wrapped up in my own issues, that even if you didn't fall pregnant, I shouldn't have left you the way I did. He was upset about that, mainly because, I haven't been home in a while either. It's always in my head that I'm a burden to people, even if they care about me, and that just results in me hurting them."

Margaret came over and sat beside him. "I'm not going to tell you how to feel about yourself," she said, "because I have no idea how it is to live with lycanthropy. But I think it's safe to say that none of us sees you as a burden. Eleanor is ecstatic to have you in her life and your father, while a little upset right now, I know he's thrilled that you're here. And I'm glad you're here. People are happy to have you in their lives, a full moon isn't going to change that."

"Right, you're right."

"I know I haven't been the best mother to Eleanor in the past, but I have to know that you're going to stick around, Remus. I can't have you come into Eleanor's life and then decide that you don't want to be around for whatever reason. She deserves the best from both of us."

"I agree," Remus said softly, before placing his hand on her knee, "and we're all going to figure this out together. I promise."

She offered a small smile as she placed her hand over his, letting him know silently that she was going to hold him to such a promise.
