CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

Overly delighted to get a letter from Eleanor, let alone one that was solely addressed to him, Fred dropped everything he was doing, in order to respond in a prompt manner. He decided to mention to her that he and his family would be attending the Quidditch World Cup, not to brag, but in hopes that Eleanor would also find her way there. But he also confessed to her that his mother was giving him and George a hard time regarding their business. It left him feeling a lot better and he decided to send the latest recipe that they were attempting to turn into another product.

The box in front of him only consisted of custard creams, but like the others, they would soon be turned into Canary Creams. Which meant that whoever ate them would end up transfiguring into a rather large canary for a minute or so. But Fred wasn't in the mood to attempt to prank Eleanor as he grabbed the box of the untouched and made his way over to where Dermot remained in the window. Tying to letter to the little parcel, Fred allowed the owl to grab the letter and box before it flew away.

A few minutes later, George entered the bedroom cautiously, wondering if his brother was still upset. However, he quickly noticed the letter that Fred was attempting to hide before he grinned and sat down on his own bed. Fred didn't say anything to him initially, returning to whatever he had been working on before, but George didn't feel like teasing him at the moment. It was clear to all the Weasley siblings that currently resided in the Burrow, that Fred fancied Eleanor.

George had been a witness to most of the moments of them flirting back and forth within the Hogwarts castle, but it was obvious that they were attempting to take things slow, or perhaps too nervous to actually admit it to one another. Either way, George couldn't bring himself to bother Fred over it, especially knowing that his twin had been in a rather awful mood since they had a row with their mother recently over Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes.

Molly had never condoned their pranking nature, very often scolding them and telling them to behave like their older brothers, mostly Percy. But it hurt more than anything that she wouldn't offer her support to their actual dream. Sure, it wasn't some prestigious Ministry position, but honestly, did she really think with their personalities that they were suited for such a thing? It was like she didn't know them at all.

Grabbing the one box of untouched custard creams that he had purposely put aside for later, George leaned back on his bed with the intention of eating every last one. Fred glanced up from the fake wand he was looking over, only to have his eyes widen.

"What are you doing?" he asked. "Do you want to turn into a canary?"

George was mid-bite into one of the creams when he paused and peered up at him. "No, that's why I took this box. This is the untouched batch."

Immediately, the fake wand dropped from Fred's hands onto the floor. "What? But I... the untouched batch was left over here!"

"Right, was," George emphasised. "I took it for myself, what's the big deal? There's still plenty of the actual finished product right there."

Fred looked out the window, knowing that Dermot was long gone.

"Oh no."

Eleanor was sitting on the front steps of her home with her latest project in hand. Over the past couple of weeks, she and Grandpa Lyall had pulled out plenty of old boxes from the attic and during their search, Eleanor found one of Hope's unfinished projects. It was tucked away in a small basket, along with the rest of her knitting supplies that included a pair of wooden knitting needles and some old yawn. When Eleanor lifted it up, she could see that Hope had been working on a jumper of sorts.

A sad air fell over them as Lyall remembered the jumper Hope had been working on during her final months. Eventually, she didn't even have enough strength to hold her knitting needles properly and when her eyesight started to fail, there was little that she could do. Eleanor was about to place the jumper back where she found it, but Lyall stopped her at the last second. She was beyond surprised when he asked her to finish it, telling her that Hope would have appreciated it more than anything because she absolutely hated leaving projects unfinished.

She readily agreed to his request, thinking she could have it finished by the time she was set to leave for Hogwarts.

The weather had been beautiful the last few days, enough that Eleanor wanted to spend every minute outside. It was also the perfect place to wait on Dermot with Fred's response to her last letter. Behind her, the door was opened, allowing the fresh air to blow gently into the house. Her parents were in the kitchen, laughing about something as they enjoyed a nice lunch together. They had offered Eleanor to sit and talk with them, but she declined, wanting to give them some alone time.

Just the other night, while Remus had been helping Margaret with dinner, it had ended up with them playfully arguing as Remus attempted to help her cook with magic, but Margaret insisted on cooking the muggle way. And while Lyall seemed to make nothing of it, besides the fact that dinner was taking even longer to make, Eleanor was hell-bent on assuming that her parents were flirting with each other.

She wanted to say something, but this was also coming from the same girl that wouldn't bring herself to admit that she fancied Fred Weasley.

Hoping that it would lead to something else, Eleanor decided to just let her parents work things out the way they wanted to. In the meantime, while she waited on Dermot's return, she was also waiting on Cedric to show up. He had sent an owl earlier in the day, telling her that he had exciting news but wanted to tell her in person. She was expecting him at any given moment, but it was Dermot that arrived first.

A smile grew on her lips instantly as Dermot dropped the parcel, attached with a letter, at her feet. She went to pick it up, only to have Dermot peck her hand, causing her to yelp. It seemed her small cry of pain, alerted both of her parents, as their laughter died down in the kitchen and the next thing, she heard was her mother calling out to her to see if she was alright.

"I'm fine, I'm fine," she said, before scolding Dermot and rubbing her hand.

Once again, she grabbed the little parcel and letter and made her way inside. As excited as she had been to receive what appeared to be a gift, she was rather cautious about it as well, knowing the twins could have sent her anything. But as she opened it, she saw a small batch of what appeared to be custard creams. She, then proceeded to open up the letter, smiling as Fred had taken to writing "To My Favourite Hufflepuff Ellie," at the very beginning. Apparently, the two were attempting to make batches of custard creams that they would eventually turn into tricking treats, but they wanted to make sure that the flavour was there.

Her parents seemed to be waiting on her to explain the newly presented desserts. "They're trying out recipes," she chuckled, "these are custard creams. I suppose they want us to taste test them."

"I love custard," Margaret said before reaching in to grab one.

"Mum, I-"

Before Eleanor could tell her to be careful, she heard the sound of Cedric's arrival in the fireplace. Seconds later, Cedric appeared in the doorway of the kitchen trying to find her, and as he spotted her, he lifted up his arms in a cheering motion.

"Ellie, guess who is going to the Quidditch World Cup and – SWEET MERLIN! THAT'S A HUGE BIRD!" He suddenly shrieked and fell backwards.

Eleanor whipped around to see that where Margaret had once stood, she had become a giant yellow canary. She began squawking rather loudly as she flapped her wings about in a panic. Remus immediately dropped the custard that had been in his hand, while trying to get Margaret to calm down. He removed his wand and started telling her that it wasn't going to hurt but she needed to stay still.

In such a short amount of time, Eleanor felt overwhelmed with anger as she suddenly grabbed Cedric by the hand and pulled him up to his feet. He was dragged all the way to the fireplace where Eleanor grabbed a handful of the Floo powder.

"Ellie, where are we going?" Cedric asked, just before she dropped the powder.

"THE BURROW!"

Ron had been enjoying a nice game of Wizards' Chess as he attempted to beat himself as he went back and forth around the kitchen table. Every so often, Ginny would look up from her magazine and shake her head at him before looking back down at whatever article she was reading. Their parents had gone into town to pick up groceries, the twins were upstairs causing as many explosions as they could before Molly returned, and Percy was off at the Ministry, completing his latest top-secret task.

It seemed to be a rather peaceful afternoon, until they heard a crash in the sitting room, causing Ron to look up from his game and Ginny to lower her magazine. They exchanged glances with one another before they abandoned the table and approached the doorway. Ron wasn't sure what he was expecting, but it certainly wasn't the scene of a very angry Eleanor Ross standing in the fireplace with Cedric Diggory at her side.

She stepped out and Ron found himself taking a step back in intimidation, especially as she approached him.

"Where is he?"

"Where's who?" Ron managed to squeak out.

"Where is Fred?"

Every so often, there was a sense of loyalty between siblings where they would come up with a story or an excuse to save the arse of the sibling in question. Ron was willing to say that the twins weren't home, in fact, they had gone into town with their parents for some shopping. However, Ginny did not feel that sense of loyalty that afternoon as she pointed in the direction of the stairs.

"Up the stairs, second floor, first door on the right."

Eleanor gave her a look before giving a slight nod of her head. "Thank you."

Approaching the stairs, Eleanor was fully prepared to follow Ginny's direction but as she reached the bottom step, she looked up to see Fred and George standing at the top of the steps. Fred looked positively mortified, especially when he saw the angered expression on Eleanor's face.

"H-Hey, L-Love," Fred stammered, "what brings you here? Did you miss me that much?"

"YOU!" She pointed up at him. "YOU TURNED MY MOTHER INTO A CANARY!"

There was a moment of silence that passed as Fred and Eleanor looked at one another, only for Eleanor to eventually take a step up the stairs. Immediately, Fred turned on his heel and ran back towards the bedroom, slamming the door behind him. She made her way up the stairs but in passing, George stopped her.

"When you say canary, are we defining that as a few feathers and a beak, or a full transfiguration, like head to toe feathers and-"

The glare on her face caused him to swallow the rest of his words as he looked away from her.

"Right, that's not important. It's that door right there." He moved aside as Eleanor walked up to the bedroom door and started knocking against it.

"FRED WEASLEY, YOU OPEN THIS DOOR!"

"NO!"

"OPEN THE DOOR!"

"PROMISE YOU WON'T BE ANGRY!"

"NO!"

"THEN NO!"

All the while, Cedric remained downstairs where Ron and Ginny were both staring in his direction. He was trying to pretend that Eleanor and Fred were not arguing upstairs as he rocked back and forth on his heels. Eventually, he looked over at the two youngest Weasley siblings and offered an awkward smile.

"Any chance that you all are attending the Quidditch World Cup?"
