CHAPTER FORTY
Eleanor never did get Fred to come out of his room during her time at the Burrow, although she made it quite clear that she was upset with him before she left. It was one thing to attempt to pull a prank on her, but while her mother was adjusting and getting accustomed to magic, it was best for Margaret to not be turned into a canary. Thankfully, the effects of the Canary Cream were only temporary as Remus told Eleanor that it only lasted a minute before Margaret started moulting her feathers and returning to her normal self. And to Eleanor's relief, Margaret didn't react in the way that she had heavily anticipated, instead, she laughed it off before mentioning that the custard cream itself had been delicious.
But once the commotion settled down, Cedric was finally able to deliver the surprise, which had the whole reason behind his visit before the chaos. His father had gotten tickets to the Quidditch World Cup, through his job at the Ministry, and wanted to give the extra tickets to Eleanor and her family. Of course, Margaret wouldn't be able to attend, but Anne offered to spend the day with her since she didn't wish to attend the event. It left the Diggory family with three extra tickets, and while Cedric intended to invite Marnie, she had yet to return from holiday with her family.
So, Cedric offered Eleanor said tickets, in hopes that she could attend with her father and her grandfather, thinking they would enjoy it. At first, Eleanor didn't know what to say. The Quidditch World Cup was one of the biggest, if not the biggest, sporting event in the Wizard World and she was thrilled to be a part of it. Wizards and witches from all over the world would flock to one location to observe the match, and if she thought the matches at school were entertaining, she couldn't imagine how it would be to watch the professionals play.
She asked Cedric if he was sure that he wanted to give them to her, but he brushed off such a silly question. He definitely wanted her to go, not only for the experience but also because during his time at the Burrow, he learned that the Weasley family would be in attendance as well. And while Eleanor claimed to be angry with the twins (mostly Fred) over the Canary Fiasco, he was fairly certain that once Eleanor saw them again, all would be forgiven.
Remus and Lyall were thrilled when Eleanor presented them with the tickets, and plans were made to accompany Cedric and his father, Amos, to a designated portkey the morning of the 18th of August.
And the night before the Quidditch World Cup, Eleanor was seated at the table, next to Remus as the family was enjoying a nice dinner that Margaret had prepared. Lyall had joined them as well, reminiscing over the days where he played on the Quidditch team during his time at Hogwarts.
"I thought I was a fair Keeper at the time," he said, "nothing special. I initially tried out to be a Seeker, but it's a bitch trying to find that little golden bugger. At one point, I just said to hell with it, let me try out for Keeper and that worked out well for me. I was rather tall back then before gravity decided to have its way with me and hunch me over to keep me humble. But they called me 'LIMBY LUPIN.'
Eleanor snorted into her drink as Remus nearly choked on his spoonful of cottage pie. "What? I've never heard of this before, Limby Lupin?"
"Oh, I've told you the story loads of times before, Remus," Lyall waved his hand at him, "you just never bothered to listen when you were younger. But yes, they called me Limby Lupin because my arms were so long and my legs too. I would stretch out over the goal hoop, and a quaffle couldn't get past me. Good times. What about you, Ellie? Remus never played while he was in school, but you, any interest in playing?"
Glancing up from her own dish, Eleanor looked around the table before shaking her head. "No, it never really crossed my mind to play. I prefer watching and cheering everyone on. It's my speciality."
"That's the Hufflepuff in you," Lyall chuckled, "the ever-supportive. But that's incredibly important, just the same."
The rest of the evening, the three took the time to explain the aspects of Quidditch to Margaret, and she seemed to thoroughly enjoy Eleanor's retelling of Gryffindor's recent victory of the Quidditch Cup.
The next morning, Eleanor felt like she had barely gotten any sleep when she was gently awakened by her mother nudging her. She stirred finally with a groan, wishing to cradle her pillow just a little longer since the sun hadn't even come up yet. While Margaret promised to have some breakfast waiting for her downstairs, Eleanor sat in her bed, wondering why she couldn't have just side-apparated to the site with Remus and Lyall? However, it was Cedric, who insisted that she show up at his house so they could take the portkey there. And since he had been so generous to give her the spare tickets, she was willing to oblige to his request.
Pushing herself up, Eleanor shuffled to the bathroom, hearing Lyall and Remus talking downstairs. She wondered if they had even gone to bed, probably too excited to even think about sleep. She made her way into the shower to wake herself and after a good solid minute of standing under the hot water, she was finally able to open her eyes fully. Slowly, she managed to take a shower before stepping out to get dried and dressed.
A few minutes later as she was brushing her teeth, Margaret knocked on the door again, telling her that she only had about fifteen minutes before she was supposed to be leaving. Finishing as quickly as possible, Eleanor grabbed the bag she had prepared the night before. Remus had told her that it was possible for the quidditch matches to last a couple of days, even over a week in rare cases. She hurried down the steps and made her way into the kitchen where Remus and Lyall were sharing in a cup of coffee together.
"There she is," Lyall announced her entrance, "we were wondering if you changed your mind about going."
"I know I almost did," Remus yawned, "I've never been a morning person, let alone a person who gets up before the sun does."
Eleanor sat down and ate the omelette that Margaret had prepared, all the while, Margaret made sure that the three of them had what they would need, especially if the match extended past a couple of days. And when it came time for them to finally depart, Eleanor felt rather guilty about leaving her mother behind. Had it been previous years where the two of them didn't get along, Eleanor would have left the home without thinking twice, but she thought it was rather unfair that she couldn't share the experience with her own mother.
In the recent days, she had been thinking a lot of how unfair it was for muggle parents of magical children, the little assistance they received from the Ministry or how they were hardly able to be involved in their child's life. They couldn't visit the school because they would never see it, they couldn't attend sporting events, it all seemed very divided.
"I really wish you could go, Mum," Eleanor said as she was brought into a hug in front of the fireplace.
"I know, Ellie, but I've never really been a fan of sports," she chuckled, "I'm not sure if adding magic would change that. The way you all described Quidditch, sounds similar to a few moogle sports- "
"Muggle," Eleanor laughed, "Muggle, Mum. Moogle sounds like a non-magical cow."
"Muggle. Moogle. Same difference," Margaret said, "but the point I was trying to make is, I want you to have fun. Don't worry about me. I'll be fine here, and I've got Anne showing up later in the day. I'm sure we'll find something to do. Promise me you'll be safe."
"I promise."
With another hug, Eleanor eventually pulled away and stepped into the fireplace, waiting on her father and grandfather. Lyall brought Margaret into a hug, promising that he would keep an eye out on Eleanor before he joined his granddaughter and then the two were left to watch as Remus and Margaret said their goodbyes to one another. They went in for a hug, and even a kiss on the cheek, exchanging a smile until they both noticed Lyall and Eleanor watching them. Quickly, Remus moved away first, taking a step back, and Margaret cleared her throat and pretended that she had left something baking in the oven.
And with a grin, Eleanor dropped the Floo Powder to make her way to the Diggory Home.
Upon arriving at the Diggory household, Eleanor and her family members were greeted by Cedric, along with his parents as they seemed to be waiting on them. And even though she had seen Cedric over the course of the summer, she still greeted him with a hug.
"Cedric!"
"Ellie!"
"Queenie! How's my favourite Queen doing this morning?"
"I told you, Ellie, it's not funny. We agreed that you wouldn't call me that!"
"I never agreed to it."
"I agreed to it for the both of us!"
"Sorry, but no can do, Queenie."
While Cedric glared at Eleanor, who laughed at his expression, all the adults in the background exchanged questionable looks with one another over the nickname.
"I may not be up to date with the latest lingo in the wizarding world, but uh, is she suggesting that he's a drag queen of sorts?" Lyall whispered to Remus. "Not judging, just curious."
"Uh, while I'm not too familiar with him, I don't think he is," Remus replied, "I think it's more directed towards the fact that he's usually the first to know the latest gossip."
Announcing that it would be best to get a move on, Amos led the way out of the home, as the group started the long trek it would take to reach the portkey. As Eleanor and Cedric talked about the latest letter they had received from Marnie, Lyall started telling his story of "Limby Lupin" to Amos. As well as the two sharing stories from working in the same department before Lyall had retired. Remus took the opportunity to enjoy the walk, although occasionally stumbling over a gnarly tree root or a rock in the dark. It didn't even seem like a long walk until they were nearing their destination and Amos asked them to look around for the portkey.
Eleanor didn't even know what to be looking for when she heard footsteps approaching where she and Cedric were looking and the scene that appeared caused her to freeze in place. The entourage of the Weasley family, including Harry and Hermione, came into the clearing and immediately her eyes settled on Fred. She was about to ask what they were doing there but the obvious answer was that they were going to the Quidditch World Cup as well. However, she had a sneaking suspicion that it was not a mere coincidence that they all ended up at the same meeting place.
She immediately rounded on Cedric, who was looking in every other direction but at her, until she grabbed him by the arm.
"Queenie, you knew about this, didn't you? That's why you invited me to join you this morning!"
"Over here, Arthur! We've got it over here!"
Eleanor could only watch as the two groups came to meet in the centre, Remus looked surprised as well to see the Weasley family, along with Harry. And Harry looked absolutely confused to see Remus there but happy, nonetheless.
"This is Amos Diggory, everyone," Arthur introduced, "Works for the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. And I think you know his son, Cedric? And Lyall? And Remus? You two are here?! And this is..."
"Eleanor Ross," Ginny piped up from the back. "From Hufflepuff."
"Starts with an E," Ron added, "ends with an R."
Turning a bright shade of red, Eleanor went to hide behind Cedric, but he only placed his arm around her shoulder to keep her in place. Arthur didn't seem to catch on to the fact that his youngest children were hinting at the fact that Eleanor was the one that Fred had wanted to invite along to the event. He was too wrapped up in the idea of Lyall and Remus being there. He attempted to introduce Harry and Hermione, leaving Amos to interrupt.
"Merlin's beard, Harry? Harry Potter?'
The awkwardness that morning seemed never-ending as Harry replied with an uncomfortable "eh-year" before Amos rambled on.
"Ced's talked about you, of course,"
"Of course, he has," Eleanor muttered earning an elbow in her side from Cedric.
'Told us all about playing against you last year ... I said to him, I said – Ced, that'll be something to tell your grandchildren, that will ... you beat Harry Potter!'
It was Cedric's turn to feel the burn of embarrassment but as he tried to hide, Eleanor placed her arm around his shoulder to hold him in place.
"Harry fell off his broom, Dad,' Cedric interjected "I told you ... it was an accident ..."
"Yes, but you didn't fall off, did you?" Amos said proudly, "Always modest, our Ced, always the gentleman ... but the best man won, I'm sure Harry'd say the same, wouldn't you, eh? One falls off his broom, one stays on, you don't need to be a genius to tell which one's the better flier!"
Before the conversation could go any further, Remus cleared his throat loudly and announced that it was probably almost time for them to head towards the portkey. That seemed to end the embarrassing discussion for all parties included as they made their way over to surround a mangy old looking boot. All the while, Eleanor was doing her best to avoid eye contact with Fred, that was until he came to stand beside her. They said nothing to each other before they were all instructed to grab onto the boot as Arthur gave the countdown.
"Three...two...one...."
It was all so sudden, the jerk into that swept them all off their feet and as if they were caught in the means of a tornado, the winds howled around them for a lengthy few seconds before it ended abruptly. Eleanor hit the ground and nearly had the wind knocked out of her, she looked around to see that everyone else had fallen too with the exception of her father, grandfather, Amos, Arthur, and Cedric. With a groan, she went to push herself up, only to be hoisted to her feet rather suddenly.
It didn't take a genius to figure out that the twins had helped her. "I can manage to get up on my own, thank you."
"Oh, come on, love," Fred's voice whined in her ear, "you're not still angry with me, are you?"
Before she could respond, George interjected. "Yeah, Ellie, you know it was all a mistake, right? It was my fault. I ended up switching the custard creams without Fred knowing. He actually thought he sent you an untouched batch."
Eleanor's expression softened as she looked over at Fred. "Is that true?" she asked, only to watch him nod. "Well, how come you didn't tell me that?!"
"You were trying to kick down my door," Fred said, leaving her to turn red, "there wasn't a lot of discussing going on."
She turned on George, who jumped away from her. "You could have told me that it was a misunderstanding!" she turned back to Fred, but he released his hold from her and started to walk away. "Fred, I- "
"Don't worry, love, I'll let you make it up to me."
