"So the great Merlin is mad at you, I hear?" Gladys taunts as she sits down opposite Peregrine in the library the next day. The blonde haired, blue-eyed girl glares at the older girl before her, but stays silent. She turns the page of her Potion's book. Savannah was not mad at her, but she had not been seen with her because of some prank that she had pulled with James and Geoffrey, involving insulting doors and love-struck tom cats. It had resulted in a week of detentions.
"It's not that surprising. I'm more surprised she stuck with you so long. Probably pity." Again, Peregrine says nothing.
"Are you stupid or something? I'm talking to you." Gladys snaps, irritated at being ignored. She grabs the book from the girl, ripping the page and throwing it to the floor. Peregrine stands up, her face turning red along with her hair.
"I don't know what I did to you, but back off!" Peregrine snaps. Gladys scoffs, flipping her hair over her shoulders.
"Taking up the attention of the hottest guys in school? Duh"
"They're my friends, you idiot. It's not my fault they find you repulsive." Gladys flushes and stands up, pulling her wand out and pointing it in Peregrine's face.
"They will be mine, one by one. Especially that Potter boy." She hisses. Peregrine narrows her eyes and jerks out of her grasp.
"What is going on here?" Madame Yelsin screeches as she walks upon the scene. The pages from the Potion's book litter the floor, the desecrated book lying open on the table. Gladys backs up and puts a simpering look on her face.
"I found her ripping apart this book, Madame Yelsin! I was trying to stop her."
"Detention! Detention and a fine for ruining a book!" Madame Yelsin decrees. Peregrine opens her mouth but is speechless. Her family couldn't afford it!
"That's a lie." Lionel stalks out of the back bookcases, glaring at Gladys. Gladys' mouth drops open and she flicks her hair back again, trying to look beautiful and perfect.
"I beg your pardon, young man?" Madame Yelsin demands.
"Gladys took the book from Peregrine, ripped it to pieces, and then threatened her. I saw the whole thing." Lionel didn't waver his gaze as he told his story.
"And why didn't you stop it?"
"I didn't want to get involved with their fight." He said easily. Madame Yelsin huffed, grabbing Gladys' arm and hauling her away. Peregrine draws in a deep breath, tears shining slightly in her eyes.
"Thank you" She whispers. Lionel gives her a soft smile and gathers the pages, placing them in the book and shutting it.
"I'm sure someone can repair it for you. I don't know how, unfortunately." He hands it to her. She takes it and holds it to her chest, still staring at him.
"Why did you do that?" She questions.
"I hate that witch. Always trying to get into every guy's pants. It's disgusting. And I saw the look on your face, about the fine." He mentions awkwardly. Peregrine blushes and avoids his gaze.
"It's fine, I understand. I have to go, but maybe we can hang out sometime? I could help you in potions." He offers his hand. Peregrine smiles shyly and takes it, shaking once before letting go.
"I would really appreciate that."
"Can I walk to dinner with you?" Lionel asks. She nods and they walk away, Lionel explaining the principles on Moonstones in potions.
