"What's his problem?" I demanded, looking at Josephine with pity. "I'm sorry about that jerk. I have a feeling he's like that to everyone."

"It's nothing new." She whispered softly. "He's always saying things like that to me."

My eyes nearly bugged out of their sockets. "You know him?"

Josephine looked down in shame. "In more ways than one... He and I dated once..."

I gasped. "YOU DATED HIM?"

Josephine blushed. "Yeah, I know. But it was in high school, but that isn't the worst thing. I found out from distant blood, we're related. He's technically my cousin."

I clapped my hands to my mouth, not daring to believe this. "Oh my god..."

"I know," She replied, poking at her food. "It was mortifying. I think he resents me for it. Even blames me. He used to be nice, you know."

Hero, nice? I couldn't picture that.

"Well, it's history." I rolled my eyes. "He needs to stop being such a baby about it and face the fact that it was his fault too."

Josephine smiled. "You ready to go to the campus store?"

I nodded enthusiastically. "Definitely. I need to make sure I have enough supplies for Monday."

Store shopping went smoothly. I was relieved we didn't come across Hero, but I laughed knowing someone like him wouldn't be in a place like this. He was likely trying to schedule another party.

I'd gone crazy, buying enough pencils and highlighters to stuff my purse full. Josephine on the other hand had bought a few books on stock and business management. When we were satisfied, we headed back to the dorm to shower before getting prepped for classes.

I felt embarrassed when a few boys caught my eye on my way out of my stall. I nearly beat myself up after realizing they were all co-ed. I knew both my parents would have a field day with that one.

When Monday had finally rolled around, I was satisfied with how everything went. My first class started early in the morning and my last class ended towards supper. Though we didn't have many classes together except math, Josephine and I quizzed each other to keep up with semester tests. We had a good dynamic.

I had, of course, remained in touch with my parents from fear they'd drive up to the college to steal me away and tried to convince them that there was no need to worry. My father was skeptical, but then again, he always was. All in all, the week had been perfect.

On Friday, Josephine and I had short schedules so we decided to visit the small cafe a few miles off-campus. It was decorated all in pink and smelled strongly of vanilla. Their specialties were finger sandwiches and iced coffees, which we both decided to try.

We were enjoying ourselves going over our curriculum and joking around, until, someone interrupted our conversation.

"Hey!"

Unbeknownst to us, Annie had been standing in the ordering line for some time with a girl I didn't recognize. She looked vastly different from Annie wearing a bright red Delta PI shirt and bedazzled shorts that had a bikini peaking underneath. She looked like she'd returned from the beach recently.

Annie ran over to our table, her lace tank-top showing a bit more than I would have liked.

"Oh," I did my best to fake a smile, "I had no idea you were here."

Couldn't I go anywhere without her showing up?

"Yeah." Annie grinned broadly. "I had a crazy night last night. Needed a pick-me-up."

Without a second thought, I looked over at her friend who was still standing in line. Now that I observed her, she really did look trashed.

"It's good I saw you here," Annie went on, "I've been looking for you all over campus. I haven't seen you since the bonfire."

"Yeah," I replied, "I've been quite busy. I have classes to attend."

I knew what I said was judgemental, but I couldn't help it. It was true. Annie, however, didn't seem fazed by this.

"Oh, don't I know it!" She replied jokingly. "So, hey, about that sorority party-"

"Did it get canceled?" I asked hopefully. "If that's the case, no worries. I have a busy schedule."

Annie must have found this comment hilarious. She began bursting out in laughter. "Never, since the sorority existed has a party ever been canceled! No... I was reminding you about it. It's this Saturday."

My voice cracked miserably as I desperately tried to come up with an excuse. "I can't really-"

"Come on," She begged. "Classes don't even run that late."

"Yeah, but we can't really-"

Annie's expression now got more serious. "I'm not going to take no for an answer. At least once in your life you should experience a party. It'll be at a decent time- one hour. That's all I ask. Then you can leave."

I looked back at Josephine, waiting for her to come up with a decent lie, but she shrugged. I could tell she wasn't good with lying either. I knew nothing good could come of this and everything at the party would be illegal, but I knew what I was doing. I wasn't quick to throw my life away. I wouldn't take a drink or vape. I would take a stroll around the sorority then find my way back to my dorm. Easy enough.

"Fine." I agreed.

A minute later, Annie's friend ran over with two blended coffees, and when Annie told her everything, she jumped up and down excitedly, squealing. She then hugged me and called me her 'sister', whatever that meant. When both Annie and her friend exited the cafe, I began freaking out, tugging at Josephine's shirt.

"Oh my god! You have to come with me!"

"What?" Josephine exclaimed. "No, I can't go! I'm not good with parties!"

I huffed. "Neither am I! Please! I don't want to go to that sorority alone! It'll be weird!"

For a minute, Josephine seemed to be fighting with herself in her head, but she eventually gave in, looking nervous.

"Fine. I'll go."

I took a moment to look at my phone, which made me worry my parents would know about this as soon as it happened.

Thank you so much for reading this chapter. I've only been updating for six days and I already have 59 views. That may not seem like a lot but I am extremely grateful :)
