When Friday had finally come around, I was feeling anxious. Not only had I been in the process of shifting times for my classes (Which had been successful) but I had to work with Josephine.
I wasn't upset at this, by any means. Any other day I would have been jumping around in joy, but knowing what she would think of me after seeing me leave with her cousin didn't make me feel comfortable.
I'd had plenty of time to warn her, through Math and before we left for our shift, but I held my tongue, not bothering to say anything.
Josephine carried on the conversation by talking about what we could expect on our first evening of work. She had clearly been elated, but my thoughts were too overcome with what Hero would be dragging me to do.
What could be so exciting about making coffee anyway? Surely she had thought being me, I would just want to get on with things and get through the night. The one thing I didn't like about working at Starbucks was the fact they made us wear clunky green vests. It wasn't becoming to my appearance at all- I was mortified at the thought of anyone back home seeing me in it.
As soon as we stepped inside the cafe and clocked in, there was a manager surprisingly cheery about everything. She was energetic, running around the small compartment in which we stood, showing us how to serve and use the register. I had managed to mess up a good deal of things, thoroughly embarrassing myself. Josephine, on the other hand, excelled in everything, teaching me how to do things in a less chaotic way.
The manager was a major chatterbox, wanting to move from one thing to the other, in a five-second time-span.
As I heard the cafe door jingle, I grinned, determined to get at least one thing right. When I reached the register and went to greet the customers my mouth nearly dropped to the ground. I wanted to die- literally. There stood each and every girl in their tiny clique I knew from grade school, laughing with one person I knew hadn't known them even back then.
Kylie.
I didn't understand how this could be.
"Oh, my God," a tall girl with perfectly straightened blonde hair and perfectly manicured nails- whom I could only remember as the worst of them all- exclaimed, "Kristina Addison? Is that you?"
I wanted to deny it, but what could I do? Kylie was with them, much to my disgust. I didn't have a choice.
"Yeah," I squeaked miserably, "That's me..."
"Oh, I remember the fun you and I use to have!" The blonde went on, looking back at her group. "Don't we girls?"
A fit of giggles erupted within the group. I wanted the ground to swallow me up.
"Oh, this is rich," Kylie said snobbily, "I guess you have always been a loser."
I decided to ignore this. "Can I get you... six... anything?"
"No," Kylie taunted, "I think it's much more fun talking to you about your school days."
Another girl out the group with blazing red hair and a nasally tone shouted:
"What was that cute nickname we gave you? Thousand-pound-Krissy?"
I looked down, getting ready to shed tears. I hated that name they had given me. Thousand-pound-Krissy. Yes, I had been overweight. It was the baby fat. That was all.
"Excuse me, ladies," my manager spoke loudly, "I think this is enough. You all need to leave."
I looked up again at the jingle of the door. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was Hero a few hours early. As I looked at Kylie staring at him expectantly, I knew it was too good to be true. He had come for her.
"Finally," Kylie grinned, as she tugged at the sleeves of his leather jacket, "You decided to get over yourself and join me."
The air went silent. Every girl out of the group was now staring at Hero, nearly drooling from the corners of their mouths. They all looked so dependant on him. Geez. Had I looked that dumb?
I was taken aback when Hero nearly threw her off him, looking at her with the ugliest glare he could muster.
"I told you to leave me the fuck alone! I'm not here for you!"
He turned to look at me.
"How many hours do you have left?"
"Um... about seven..."
I heard a sharp intake of breath from the clique. I couldn't tell which of them it had been but from the look of it they were all pretty upset.
"You're here for her?" Kylie demanded with a visibly shaky voice. I could already see the hurt in her red-rimmed eyes.
Hero, however, didn't answer. He simply took a seat at the nearest table making himself at home. It wasn't long before Kylie stormed out of the cafe with the entire group at her heels.
