As soon as Ellie had managed to beg a boy from the frat to drive us over to Whitney Hall and helped us get settled in without much trouble, me and Josephine set to getting comfortable in the furnished beds. It wasn't long before we began hearing people running up and down the halls, making a raucous by pounding on the door.
Feeling irritated, I swung open the door to find a boy holding a beer bottle, swaying on the spot. This wasn't another frat, was it?
"Oh, hey!" The boy exclaimed, sounding taken aback. "You up for a game- Oh, how rude of me-!" He shoved the bottle towards me, making the liquid lap over the brim. "You want some juice?"
I wasn't sure if it was still the alcohol in my system making me braver, but I pushed the bottle away nearly knocking it out of his hands, though he didn't seem to care.
"No, thanks," I said in a clipped tone, "I actually came out here to tell you that me and my friend are trying to get some sleep, so if you could quit knocking on our door."
The boy looked over my shoulder at Josephine as if noticing her for the first time. He raised his eyebrows, clearly amused with something.
"You mean my room?" He said. "Well, me and my dorm mates room."
I gasped. "But we were told that this was a spare room!"
The boy didn't react the way I expected. He began chuckling holding up both his hands in defeat. "It's fine! I'm not upset. The frat is always bringing girls over. I'm just not used to girls so beautiful..."
I flushed, not used to hearing things like this at all. If anything, every boy in school made it a habit to make fun of my long skirts and cardigans.
"If you don't mind," The boy went on, "I just have to get some things together."
"Sure, I don't see a problem with-"
Before I could get the rest of my sentence out, he started removing his shirt, displaying a toned physique, without shame. I couldn't help but look. Now that I got a good look at him, I finally noticed his features: bright sandy blond hair, electric blue eyes, a heart-stopping smile, and a knack for Hawaiian clothing. He was cute, for sure.
I looked back at Josephine who was hiding under the thick Chico State blanket on her bed. Clearly, she was uncomfortable by this whole ordeal.
"Don't worry," The boy winked, "I'll be out in a jiffy."
After what felt like many hours of procrastinating and dragging his feet, the boy had finally made his way out of the room, giving us our space.
Conveniently, I saw that one of the desks held a fluorescent lantern and a noise machine. Turning them both on and shutting off the lights, I gave into the nature sounds drawing me into a deep sleep.
When I awoke in the morning by a sliver of light peeking through the window above my bed, my eyes adjusted. I soon discovered that we weren't alone. The same boy from the night before was sitting on the edge of my bed, holding a tall glass of water and half a sandwich. I quickly sat up, lifting the covers to my chest.
"Don't worry," The boy said in a raspy tone, "You're still covered. I have a plate of food for your friend too when she wakes. You should eat."
I took the plate and glass out of his outstretched hands, digging in.
"I know you must want me out of your dorm," I laughed, "I'll eat this as fast as I can-"
"That's not it at all." He replied. "I quite like you in here. It's different... Interesting..."
I nearly choked on my breakfast. "Oh, um... I should thank you for doing all this... My name's Kristina."
The boy released a dazzling grin.
"Miller. Luke Miller."
I looked down at my plate, not being able to stare this boy in the eyes much longer. I'd never felt this way before.
"I-I must go," I stuttered, looking around for nothing in particular. "That girl that got me a ride-"
"Ellie?" Luke asked. "Ellie Evans? Yeah, she caught me up on everything. She's going to be picking you up shortly."
"Oh perfect!" I said. "Do you mind giving us a minute while we..." I trailed off, knowing I didn't need to finish what I had to say.
Luke immediately jumped up from the bed, blushing himself. "Oh, yes, right!"
Before he exited out the door, he hung on the frame, calling for me.
"Yes?" I asked.
"You really are gorgeous," He replied, "You know that, right?"
Before I could reply with an answer, he shut the door, his words ringing in my ear.
I hope you are all doing good today.
Can't believe Thanksgiving is so close :)
What do you have planned?
