As the following week passed, I couldn't help but remember my discussion with Dorinda.
I felt that I had hit a nerve within her and that I was close in getting her to talk.
Had that just been wishful thinking?
Perhaps.
Deep down, I really did want her to like me. Maybe then, that would be a punch in the gut to her mother.
Diedre was a heinous human being. To both strangers and family.
Both Hero and I had met with Emma at our earliest convenience. She had revealed that the cops were taking her more seriously and were watching Elouise and Charlie from a distance.
She wouldn't reveal what exactly was going on in the case but urged me to keep Elouise talking through calls and texts.
She had told me that there would come a time when I would need to meet with them. Possibly with a hidden recorder.
This fact had scared me. I wasn't good at hiding my emotions.
What made them think I could lie like that?
Despite all this, Jo and I scheduled a night out with Brendan. Though we had decided beforehand on going to coffee, Brendan surprised us with fake ID's.
He had dressed to impress and said he wanted to throw some shapes and go to the bars.
When I told Hero about this, he was skeptical and a bit upset, but he eventually gave in.
"You'll have to make it up to me," he growled, "I may have something planned for when you get back."
This made me blush the entire time I spent getting ready under his watchful eye. I felt like a seductress as I slowly eased on my bra and panties, as he stared at my soft skin.
It made me pulsate, but I couldn't get distracted. I had to make him wait.
Finding something to wear wasn't an issue. Brendan had a few friends that had plenty of dresses to spare.
Josephine had picked a long glittering pink sequin dress while I had chosen a pink satin mini dress.
We had finished each others hair at Brendan's house, while while he took care of himself, dressing better than both of us put together.
He had slicked his hair back, forming a cute curly Q, with a tight black leather suit, completed with a bow tie and a furry jacket.
"How are you so good at fashion?" I gasped, staring at his confident stance.
Brendan simply laughed.
"I was born an artist when I was a sperm."
This caused us all to laugh before we left to Club Congo.
I felt comfortable when we arrived. It wasn't glitzy or flashy. It was a calm atmosphere, very tame and not at all populated.
When we stepped into the barn styled club, the lights were dimmed and a few people were dancing to a techno beat.
We were glad to see that the bar was nearly empty leaving us an opportunity.
Brendan must have had experience with buying drinks because he wasn't nervous at all.
With a flirty streak, he brandished our ID's ordering drinks I had never heard of before.
While we patiently watched the young bartender make his way around his workspace and listened to Brendan gossip about how cute he was, I felt a tap on my shoulder.
"Kristina?"
I swiveled around to find none other than Cole, dressed in a suit and tie looking as crisp as ever.
"I didn't expect to see you here!" He exclaimed.
I laughed, genuinely taken by surprise.
"Ditto! I mean... I'm here with my friends- Jo, this is our boss."
Josephine immediately stuck out a hand. Cole grinned at this.
"Oh, of course. Miss. Josephine Langford. You're our new hire and due to start in a matter of days, correct?"
Jo nodded. "Yes. And I am absolutely grateful for the opportunity."
Despite our serious talk, Brendan fluffed his air, staring right at Cole.
Oh, that was right. He had a thing for him.
"Hey, Cole," Brendan said, his voice going up about ten octaves.
"Oh, Brendan." Cole smiled, going to shake his hand. "It's nice to see you outside the office."
Brendan giggled fanning himself with a napkin nearby.
Cole ignored this. He looked back towards me, surveying my dress.
"Well don't be shy-"
He immediately gathered me in his arms, then let me go after a long minute.
"It was nice to see you." He finished.
I smiled. "It was good to see you too."
When Cole had finally (but awkwardly) left, our drinks were served not long after. They were exquisite, adorning a tie die color with an assortment of fruits thrown in.
As we drank and began ordering a second round, I heard my phone buzz on the counter. I chose to ignore this. It could wait.
When the familiar burn hit my groin, I felt the need to congregate to the middle of the dance floor. Feeling excitement and energy bursting through my veins, I let go, with jo and Brendan joining me.
We all bumped and grinded together, drawing a few other people to the floor.
Soon enough, everyone was huddled forming a confusing maze.
I was now separated from any familiar faces, stuck in a group that I was uncomfortable socializing with.
Before I was ready, a pair of hands grasped my hips. Turning around I saw that it was a tall beefy man with musty, greasy hair.
I shoved at him.
"I don't want to be touched, asshole."
"That's too bad darling," the man said with a drawl, "you come out to a place like this, you're fair game."
"Hey!"
As I continued shoving the man off me, Brendan materialized, grabbing the man with strength I never knew he had.
"You keep your filthy paws off my friends," he ordered.
The man scoffed, eyeing Brendan's apparel.
"Why don't you go back to the hole you climbed out of? Your kind doesn't belong here."
I scoffed, taken aback by the insensitive remark.
Before I could retort, Brendan threw a strong punch, knocking the man unconscious. The crowd around us stared in awe.
"Brendan! That was amazing!"
He shrugged. "It happens all the time. You'd be surprised. Come on. Let's head to the bar and cool off."
When we made it through the throng and back to the counter, Jo's jaw was wide open.
"Oh my god, what happened?"
I waved her off still feeling a bit drunk.
"I'll tell you in a minute."
As I took a seat, I picked up my phone out of pure habit. Though my vision had been a hazy, I sobered when I saw the millions of missed calls and texts.
When I opened the most recent message, I almost yelled aloud.
It was a picture of me and Cole hugging at this very bar.
The text from Hero read:
What the fuck are you doing with that prick. I'm coming to get you.
