Chapter 51: Battle For Her Affection
Karma's POV
The teacher kept talking in front as everyone took notes.
"So, the right answer would be C, because the word 'but' can't be used to compare two things with one another." She continued explaining the lesson.
I sat lazily on my chair, thinking whether or not I should sleep or go out.
My mind continued to wonder as I put my hands in my pockets.
"Nagisa has a meeting today, so she'll be late... I guess I'll drop by Nagayama."
But if she's coming home from a student council meeting, that means that blonde dude will be there, too, huh?
Since I'm in another school, I'm definitely at a disadvantage, here.
"He'll definitely try to pull something off, that bastard..."
"Let's see here... Akabane-san," The teacher called me. "Since it seemed like you already understood the lesson, please try answering this question here."
I looked at the teacher with a lazy look.
"Which one of these is correct?" She started writing down a few sentences on the board.
"The rain fell down on it's head, making it drenched."
"The rain fell down on its head, making it drenched."
I gave the sentences a quick read before saying, "The second one."
"That's right!" The teacher smiled.
"You see, class, 'it's' with an apostrophe is a short of 'it is'. Whereas 'its' is a sign of ownership, like 'don't judge a book by its cover' or 'Put it back in its place'. If you say 'The rain fell down on it's head', then you're basically saying 'The rain fell down on it is head'."
I heard the class made a short "Ooh" sound at me answering it correctly.
"The same goes for 'your' and 'you're'..." As the teacher kept on talking while writing on the chalkboard, I payed my attention more to what's in my mind.
Which is, Nagisa.
-At Nagisa's School-
Nagisa's POV
I took the books I had on my table and neatly placed them in my bag. I took some notes as the meeting went on.
As I was cleaning up, I saw someone walking towards me in the corner of my eye.
"Hey, Shiota-san," Yamaguchi-kun said. "Can I see your notes for a sec?"
I looked at him and gave him my notebook. "Sure."
I was taken a bit by surprised, since this was the first time he asked me for my notebook. Nevertheless, I think it's because he's opened up just a little.
"Thanks," He returned my notebook. "So that means we'll be checking the storage room with the others."
"Yeah."
I placed my notebook in my bag and closed it up. As I put the bag on my shoulder, Yamaguchi-kun said, "Let me walk you home."
"Eh?" A sentence that Yamaguchi-kun never said to me. I was really taken by surprise this time. "Are you sure? I'll be fine by myself."
"It's fine," He continued. "Besides, it's late."
I tilted my head. "...Is that his way of saying he's worried about me?"
"Well, alright, if you insist." I smiled. "I think he really has warmed up a little... I'm glad."
We walked out of the student council room and to the school gates. The school was emptier, since most of the students went home already.
Third Person View
The two walked to the gates.
Yamaguchi felt quite happy about it, but it didn't show on his face.
Nagisa looked at the front gate and suddenly stopped. "Karma?"
That one word made Yamaguchi stop his tracks and gazed upon who was leaning on the wall beside the gate.
"Hey, Nagisa-chan~" Karma greeted Nagisa with his ever so cheerful yet teasing voice.
"I thought you went home already!" Nagisa looked at him with surprise.
"I decided to wait for you," Karma snickered. "You are my lover after all, right?"
The devil hugged Nagisa's head as he laughed, giving off an intimidating aura that was obviously for Yamaguchi.
"W-well..." The bluenette stammered, clearly embarrassed.
Yamaguchi looked at Karma with an annoyed look. "Bastard... So this is how you want to play, huh?"
"But you usually go home if I have a meeting... What made you change your mind this time?" Nagisa asked the red-head.
Karma let go of her before answering. "Hm... I just wanted to see you." He smiled.
Nagisa gave him a look, tilting her head. "Well, it doesn't look like I'll get an answer from him." she thought before shrugging it off.
"Yamaguchi-kun, are you okay with this?" She asked the blonde behind him.
"Of course. I keep my word." Yamaguchi answered, trying his best not to show how annoyed he was towards Karma.
"Of course I'm not okay with that guy foiling my moment!" A vein popped up on Yamaguchi's head as he looked at Karma who was sticking his tongue out.
"Alright then." Nagisa smiled and started walking.
As Nagisa walked past them, she didn't notice the electricity forming between Karma and Yamaguchi's eyes.
"Look here, blondie," Karma started with a smile. "I can take it from here. Why don't you go back to your books already?"
Yamaguchi answered him with a glare, "Unlike you, who doesn't walk her home whenever we have a meeting, I actually care for her well-being and safety. That's why I've taken the time to walk her home."
"Hm?" Karma tilted his head. "You know, Nagisa's a lot more capable than she looks. Don't tell me you don't even know that?"
"I am fully aware, 100%. Don't underestimate me, Akabane."
"Guys? What's wrong?" Nagisa's voice interrupted their little argument as she looked behind her back.
"Nothing." Karma immediately answered her as he left Yamaguchi to walk by the bluenette's side.
Yamaguchi gave Karma a look before doing the same.
The three walked down the road. Nagisa was unaware of the tension building up between the two boys beside her. Heck, she was thinking about what to make for breakfast tomorrow.
As they were approaching her house, Karma offered the bluenette a carton of vanilla milk. "Here."
"Ah!" Nagisa took the milk in her hands. "Thanks, Karma!" She felt quite happy about it.
Karma smiled at her. "You really are a little kitty, huh, Nagisa?"
"I'm not!" Nagisa replied, defending herself. "Don't compare me with a cat." She blushed as she stabbed the straw in the milk carton.
The red-head smirked at her cuteness. Even though he used the "vanilla milk offer" tactic a lot, it worked every time.
Seeing how Karma made an attack, Yamaguchi began to follow. "That's kind of low, Akabane. Are you saying you see Shiota-san as a pet?" He said with his usual tone of voice, except this one was a little stern.
"Nonesense," Karma replied. "I'm merely saying that she's cute."
Nagisa's face reddened at his statement.
"Is that so?" The blonde said.
"That is so."
...
The bluenette between them started to notice that something was out of place. "Maybe Karma did academically challenge him..."
She looked at her house, which was only a few steps away.
"Hey, Nagisa," Karma spoke once again. He smiled, "Let's go to that new pancake place tomorrow."
"Pancake?" Nagisa showed him a blissful smile. "Sure!"
As she was about to open the gate to her house, she suddenly stopped. "Pancakes?"
Her eyes widened, "Pancakes!" Realizing she had said it aloud, her cheeks heated up.
She looked at the two boys behind her. "Thank you, you two. See you at school, Yamaguchi-kun! Same time as usual, right, Karma? See you tomorrow!"
Nagisa rushed in her house, leaving the two. "Ahh, that was embarrassing... Well, at least I know what to make for breakfast tomorrow..."
Outside, Karma and Yamaguchi stood silently.
"..."
"Did she just leave you for pancakes?" Yamaguchi spoke.
"She left you too, dumbass."
"Shut up. I'm going home."
