Chapter 28 - Just Dragons All the Way
Sky never expected that this day could ever get so bad. Sure, she loved travelling between realms, but maybe not this one.
Oh, wait. We're getting ahead of ourselves.
-
It turns out that Ninjago City was being attacked by a stone giant.
It looked alot like Gamadon's in the show, but without the hat thingy on its head. It got right to smashing buildings with its giant fists, controlled by Nick, who was standing on its head in his Dragon Slayer attire. His red cape flowing tauntingly on the wind, his face normally covered by a white cloth, now hidden behind one of the oni masks.
The mask of vengeance did work with his red belt and cape. Although wearing plain white clothes underneath might not have been the right choice. Even more so considering the storm raging over the city.
His outfit was, of course, made to mirror Dragon Warrior's own, grey one, but on this guy, it looked a bit ridiculous.
But what really upset Sky, was that he was holding a naginata as his weapon. It didn't match his over the top style. A simple weapon just doesn't go well with something dressed in lots of bells and whistles!
Okay, now that her quote of the day has been spoken, Sky was ready to kick Nick's ass.
-
"What do you mean 'stay on the ship'?!!" She shouted at Lloyd and Mei who were trying to keep her from getting out of her room.
"You heard me. You got yourself stabbed. You will not fight tonight." Mei said in a stoic tone, not leaving any place for discussion.
So, sitting on the ship it was. "Hey, um, Mystake gave us this the last time we visited her. Would you mind keeping an eye on it?" Lloyd asked, giving the girl a strange, but not unfamiliar paper bag.
-
The team left the ship with Sky on it, to try and take the Stone giant down.
"YOu GoT YOurSeLf StabBeD. Well, yeah, like it's their fight and not mine." Sky wasn't really sure to whom she was talking, since no one was even present on the ship except for Wu except her. Just sitting on her bed, talking to no one.
And thinking she was the one Dragon Slayer was hunting down. She was the one who brought this misfortune at the citizens. She was the one who's fault this is.
And yet she's the one who's resting. She is sitting in a safe place, while her friends and siblings are out there, fighting her battle. Even Garmadon went ahead and grabbed a weapon.
Okay, she got stabbed, but why is she not fighting? Why is she just sitting on the ship, like a coward?
She has to stand up and fight! She may not be in the best condition right now, but at least she's gonna try to defend her family!
She can't lose her family again. She will help them.
She grabbed Leo, who somehow got out of his aquarium and onto her lap, sat him on her bedsheets and stood up.
She fished out her outfit and began putting it on. It hasn't been worn in a month at least, and so smelled of lavender and ocean breeze after laundry.
Closing the door not to let Leo out, they silently slipped through the hallways and out onto the deck. From there they made their way to the bridge and started the engines.
-
The fight wasn't particularly hard. The worst part was trying not to wound any civilians. And so the team divided into two groups. Lloyd, Harumi, Garmadon and Zane were evacuating citizens, while Cole, Kai, Jay, Liv and Mei were trying to fight the villain, who was currently trying to cause as much damage as possible.
Nick was shouting something from his spot on the giant's head, but Mei didn't really care. Right now her attention was only on one thing. On the Destiny's Bounty which just docked next to the NGTv building a few blocks away.
Her gaze quickly shifted to the person who right now jumped down from the deck and quickly turned into a bird.
Sky was supposed to stay on the ship, not fight with them! That stab wound is never gonna heal this way!
The Dragon Warrior then flew up onto some of the skyscrapers closer to the Stone giant, and stood up in a challenging stance.
They weren't angry. They were probably just trying to get Nick's attention off civilians and the ninja. Stupid. They're gonna get hurt this way, can't they see it?
Who was she kidding? Of course they knew. But that was just the thing with them. They valued everyone's lives higher than their own.
Nick took the bait and went on to chase the Warrior, who started running away and shouting insults at him.
-
They enjoyed it. The speed of the wind brushing against their feathers as they flew.
They weren't scared. They didn't feel the adrenaline in their veins, too focused on leading Nick as far from their family as possible.
Take a left turn into Gordon's street, then turn right to not lead him into the city centre, and straight up ahead as far as they can. "Hey, are you even trying?" They shouted, mocking Dragon Slayer who was growing more and more enraged with every minute.
Okay, now was the time to think about a plan to lose him.
They admit, it was incredibly stupid of them to go in without a plan, but now was not the time to think about it. Now it was the time to make a plan.
Wait, if they flew over... And then go that way... He may be stuck... Yes, that is gonna work. Let's do it!
And so they changed their course to lead the Stone Giant out onto the Sea of Sands. They saw when he realized where they were going, when he kept glancing back and forth between them and the city, but was so determined to get his revenge, he just ordered the giant to go faster.
The Dragon Warrior has tilted a bit to the right, as to change trajectory a bit, for Nick not to realize they were leading him into a trap.
-
After a dozen minutes, the Dragon Warrior finally finished executing their plan, and flew under a rock formation the Stone Giant couldn't break, nor go through.
Shooting the last glance at Nick, who was furiously trying to free the Stone Giant, they flew back to the city.
-
They came back to the city, changed into their semi-human form and landed softly on Bounty's deck. The ninja didn't have time to ask any questions, because the Stone Giant returned, with Nick still on its head.
"Oh no, him again?!" The Dragon Warrior shouted, annoyed. They just got rid of him! "What, you think I don't have an escape plan ready at all times?" He snickered back.
"Okay, he's back! We have to fight him again! Come on!" Kai took the lead and slid down the anchor to the nearest building, Cole and Zane following suit.
"Hey, what is this?" Jay suddenly stopped to grab a paper bag. "Wait, no don't!" Dragon Warrior screamed, but it was too late. He opened it and suddenly flower-like leaves started circling them, blocking any view.
They hoped no one else got transported with the two.
-
Jay opened his eyes only to immediately be blinded by the intensive sunlight. He wasn't in the city anymore. But the Bounty was here with him. What happened? "Where are we?" He didn't really expect to get a response.
Nonetheless it came. "In the realm of Oni and Dragons. Although now it's only dragons." Someone's voice said. It sounded awfully familiar.
A hand helped him stand up, and then he saw the Dragon Warrior. Oh, wow. This was one of the people he did not expect to see.
right behind them stood Harumi, Lloyd and Liv. "Yeah, Wren said it is the first realm ever!" Liv got excited.
"I told you, it is not my name." They didn't seem too excited about getting a nickname. "Well, you didn't tell us your real name, so now we're gonna call you Wren." Harumi crossed her arms. It was clear she will not back down. Wren just sighed, accepting their fate.
"Okay, so... Now what?"
-
"Let's see which part of your ship got transported here." They said, ordering everyone to work. They didn't like the situation at all. Knowing their luck the Dragon Hunters will show up in a few hours and mess everything up.
"I think it's the front! Wren, we can make shelter out of some of those parts!" This name fell out of Lloyd's mouth so easily. It was weird. They didn't know if it was from the amount of fanfics they read, or what, but they associated it with forced marriage and light purple feathers.
Yes, it was oddly specific. No, they didn't know why this was the first that came to mind.
"Hey, and who are those guys?!" A shout came from behind them. It was Harumi. Well, shit got serious. "Everyone behind me!" They ordered quickly, and, to their surprise, all four listened.
"Oh hoho! We meet again Phoenix!" Iron Baron's voice sounded in their head loud and clear as day. Fuck.
"Almost didn't recognize you in your new clothes!" He laughed.
"Wait, your name is Phoenix?" Liv's whisper came from behind them. Sigh. "No. It's fake." They whispered back, not turning their eyes from Iron Baron.
"Come on, take 'em!" He shouted again. What was his plan? "Leave the children alone! This is between us!" They shouted back, trying to bargain. With a bit of luck their siblings could get out of this unharmed.
"Oh, between us?! Hahaha!" He laughed and then turned serious again. "Take them all! The kids shall be arena clowns!"
"And you" He turned to Wren (hey, the name is more handy than Dragon Warrior actually.) "will get special treatment. And don't try anything funny. You know exactly what our chains are made of." Yes. Sadly they knew. But if they can create a diversion for the kids...
They turned slightly to their siblings piled up behind their back and whispered. "Run on three."
"Wait, what?" Harumi whispered back, but the only response she got was "One."
Wren turned back to Iron Baron and his goons. "Two."
They turned into their giant dragon form and shouted "Three!" shoving a few dragon Hunters out of the kid's way with their tail.
-
That was probably the most stress Harumi had in her whole life. "Two." came her way, adrenaline already pumping in her veins.
Suddenly Wren in front of her turned into a giant snake-like dragon. Wait, they could do that the whole time?!
"Three!"
She has never run so fast in her entire life. But why were they running, if Wren could just turn into a dragon?
She dared to look back, and saw the dragon being tied up with giant chains. Okay! Okay, she'll run! If those guys can just defeat Wren so fast, what could they do to her?
-
She didn't know how long she was running. All she knew is she lost sight of everybody besides Liv.
Along with her, she continued her way forward through the desert, until they saw a small village.
Yes, it was going to be a great place to find shelter in. Especially considering it was already after nightfall.
-
They opened their eyes, only to find themself inside a giant cell. Great. "Oh, you're finally awake." A voice said from behind the door, and then the person walked away.
They sighed, sitting upright, only to find a pair of vengestone cuffs on their hands. Great! So no shapeshifting.
They took a moment to take in everything in their cell. A bowl with something inside laying on the floor (probably their only food for next days), a small window with bars in it, and yellowish stone of the walls around them. Not counting the door with another window in it (it was probably guarded still).
The only good thing was that they weren't tied or chained to anything and could move around freely around their cell.
Suddenly two pairs of footsteps caught their attention, and a few seconds later two guards barged in and led them out. "Hey, um, where are we going?" None of them answered. Bummer.
They led them out onto the arena, where a crowd was already cheering.
"Now, why don't we see how she fights without her little powers, huh?!" Iron Baron shouted, and the stands erupted into wild shouts and whistles.
Right after that a giant dragon (no, it was not Slab, they identified) was freed onto the arena.
"Okay, what is it? LFLS Ninjago edition?" They joked, mostly to themself, as no one could really hear them. It was still a great reference.
The dragon, called Flamethrower apparently (god who named him?), immediately started attacking Wren with his fire breath. They tried dodging the flames, not always succeeding. They were on defensive, not wanting to hurt the dragon, who, probably, was in the exact same situation. Captured and forced to fight.
They churred lightly, but loud enough for the dragon to hear, in an attempt to ask him how long he's been here. Based on the scars around his wrists (probably from chains) it must've been a while. He stopped for a second, caught off guard, but came right back to trying to kill them.
Okay, that didn't work out, but hey, let's not lose hope!
In response they growled softly, trying to comfort Flamethrower. He backed his head a bit, in a surprised-but-kinda-scared manner and stopped attacking, tilting his head. Wren murmured loudly, and he responded with a light, curious roar and a flick of his tail.
Then the two started talking in soft growls and murmurs. It wasn't anything complicated. Mainly the sounds for 'safe', 'friends' and something Wren didn't know before, but thought could mean the Dragon Hunters.
It was all right and friendly, until the stands erupted into yells and screams. People started shouting at them.
And then someone jumped down onto the arena. After them followed another and another.
At this point Wren was backing into a corner, Flamethrower behind her. They felt the need to protect this creature no matter what.
Oh, who were they kidding? The last time they weren't even able to save themself. And the crowd was getting closer and closer.
When suddenly someone walked out of it, coming forward.
Oh, it wasn't good. They were about to gain some new bruises.
