Chapter 16 - It Gets Less Silly
Explaining, how the whole Apocalypse stuff was a false alarm, was awkward to say the least. Ninja were just disappointed, and Wu was angry.
He pulled Sky to the side to talk to her. "Ninja told me about your power."-He stated. Oh, great. Sky wasn't happy about it, to say the least. "If we want you to be ready for future villains like this one, you need to train."-He continued.- "Your first task will be to fill this bucket."-Master Wu pulled a bucket from behind his back and handed it to Sky.
Was that a joke? She grabbed it, filled it with water from a nearby pond and came back. "I think you have a leak-"-Wu leaned over to point out the hole in the bottom of the bucket, but froze, upon realizing, that the water was, in fact, not flowing out thru it.
"Uh, yeah, you learn a thing or two, during the four-year-long elemental training..." Sky said nonchalanty in response to Wu's confused face. "So, I think I'll be alright." She walked away with a smug smile on her face.
"So, tell me, are you a ninja, or not?"-The interviewer asked eagerly, lening closer to Sky. To her demise, all of the TV channels discovered that she was perfect for spilling the tea. She liked drama, stayed honest while interviewed and answered all the questions. So, now she was being called into a studio at least once a week.
"No, I'm not." Sky replied, grabbing another salty stick.
"Are you sure? Your clothes-"
"Damn. Everyone wers clothes. Except for Jeff. But we don't talk about Jeff." She corrected herself quickly and got back to the topic. "Just because I walk around in a sleeveless turtleneck, doesn't mean, I can fight."-She took a bite of her salty stick, and shifted her grip on the remaining part, to hold it like it was a cigarette. "Okay then, onto the next question! Our viewers are dying to know! Are you dating anyone?!" This guy, whose name was apparently Tony Spillings. "Oh, not this again! No one!" Sky half shouted, tired. That was such a basic question, she had to go thru every time. "Okay, there is one person. I will tell you about them, BUT under one condition." She paused for a few seconds to add the climactic effect. "I will never speak of them again on TV." She said, like it was the worts thing in the whole world, breaking her salty stick, reaching for another one and threatening the cameramen with it.
"Now! Brace yourselves, because I will tell you, one and only time, on live TV, about my crush!" That was yet another reason why every talk show host wanted to have her on their program. She knew how to make things dramatic. Almost as if she was taking up the role of the host those times.
-
They didn't have a chance to finish the conversation, because Sky got a message about a problem, so she had to leave the studio.
"Honestly, it feels good to finally be able to have a dragon of my own, now, that Wu knows"-Sky said, flying on her water dragon shaped like a vywern to imitatate an elemental dragon. "But I feel like this fella is anatomically incorrect..."-Saying this, she stood up and streched her arms out to the sides. At the same time, wyvern's wings streched wide. It's wingspan, previously being around 20 meters, now extended to 32. "Hey, we're over Ninjago City! Maybe we visit Lil' Nelson?"-Kai sked suddenly. "Eh, I don't think it's a good plan..."-Sky tried get them off this idea, now recognizing what situation they were in, but the boys weren't listening.
After announcing Nelson an Honorary Member of the Ninja Team, the squad spotted a crowd of fans screaming in excitement in front of the building. It turns out, that Kai was chirping non-stop. So much for no problems. The squad got no way to run, except for the roof. Only there, they realized, that they can't fly away, because of the halicopters circling the building. Only standing there, on this roof, it hit her. Someone's gonna die. And if there's no Nya... "Sky! Come on! Hide!"-Lloyd's voice pulled her out of the wild spiral of thoughts. Everyone was already in a hiding place.
Before she could even move, one of the helicopters spotted her. "Yeah, let's hope he missed his train."-Sky muttered to herself.
After a few hours of giving autographs, ninja finally got to Stiix, but they only found another dozens of fans there. No sign of Clouse. This was a total bust.
The next morning Sky and Mei were trying to get the Bounty back, after it was taken by the police for tax reasons. They were of course in disguise, pretending to be working there. "Hey! And who are you?!"-Suddenly a strange man approached them. Sky took a barely noticable step in front of Mei and answered without missing a beat. "I'm Sky. Investigation department. And you?"
"Hmm... Weird, I haven't seen you around before." The guy squinted his eyes.
"Yeah, I know. I usually work from home."-She scratched the back of her head with a quiet sigh and looked at the floor. Lying seemed to be so easy and natural to her, someone would wander how could anyone trust her. Mei, who was watching this whole act, almost thought about that. Almost. She knew, that despite all the acting and lying Sky was able to pull off, she was always honest and true with people she trusted. Gaining it was hard. She trusted many people, but still was acting in front of them. The only way you could tell this low-trust person from a high-trust friend, was by noticing her pupils. They shifted a little all the time, but, when landing on a friend, they took more snake-like shape, while for other people they changed to more round and human ones. She is probably not even aware of that fact.
After a lil' screwing around in the database, everyone had a luch break, so the girls decided to go eat at nearby foodtruck. They sat down on a bench and started talking. "So, you're famous now?"-Mei asked with agiggle. "Yeah, it happened when one of the journalists discovered, that I had interestng info about the ninja, and since then they interview me weekly." Suddenly Sky's smile faded away, as she got more serious. "Nadakhan is watching us. He's been stalking me all morning! I'm sick of it, I'll go talk to him."-She told Mei where she was going in case something happened. Yes, it was stupid and dangerous, but less annoying than being followed by this bozo for the whole day, or more. Mei only nodded, as a sign of understanding and went back to eating.
Meanwhile Sky took a little walk around the streets, muttering to herself. "Damn, I'd really want for him to leave me the fuck alone." Suddenly Nadakhan appeared before her.-"I can grant your wish."
"Oh, good! Then fuck off!"
"Really? Any wish you want. Do you realize what you could do?" He was trying. Sky sighed. "I know." She said in the most dreamily sounding voice she could muster, looking at some random direction.
"Oh, so someone has a wish after all." Nadakhan smiled, but Sky got serious again. "No. They are not matters to be settled with a wish." "Oh, why not?"-Nadakhan tried to tempt her into making a wish. "No. I've seen someone try it once, and it was awful. I will never wish for anything. Ever. You can't make me." She looked him in the eyes, dead seriousness in her own.
"Oh, really? Let's test that theory."-His smile widened, he started circling her, and a few seconds later they were gone in a puff of orange smoke.
"Hey, where's that work-from-home girl? What was her name?"-Supervisor asked, when Mei entered the room. "She, uh, got sick. And had to go... go home, yes."-She was lucky the Ispector bought this story. She wasn't really good at lying, she was always honest and true. Acting wasn't as easy for her as it was for Sky-. Wait, where was Sky? She should've been here long ago.
"Oh, come on, say it! Just say the word and I will make anything come true."-Djin still tried. "In your fucking dreams!"-Sky still tried to resist, now in vengestone handcuffs, on Misfortune's keep. It wasn't particularly hard, when thinking about how much suffering the wishes brought on OG ninja. "Oh, really?"-His voice switched from overly sweet to violent in a split second. "Clancee! Get her to work She'll mop the deck!"
-
So, that became her routine after the first two days. Just after being woken up, she will have to mop the deck, then play Scrap n' Tap when the crew gets up. Washing around 50 sets of dishes after the crew's lunch, and dinner with Nadakhan, then another round of Scrap n' Tap. All of it, plus being constantly reminded by the captain, that she can wish it all away. She knew it wasn't enywhere near good or healthy routine, but hey! It was a routine after all! It was just so easy falling into this rythm.
One time it got really bad. She was fighting Dogshank, and trying to dodge. It wouldn't be so hard, if she had still been able to use her powers. Yeah, she did use them in fight, but, unlike Mei, she didn't limit it to only attacking. She used to hover in air for a split second while landing, as to make any attempt to sweep her off her feet innefective, to bloodbend her opponent slightly as to throw them off balance. Now, without it, sha had a really hard time jumping from every attack her opponent threw at her. And Dogshank was growing more enraged with every passing second. Punch, kick, slam into the ground, a few miliseconds for Sky, before she could try to attack her again, punch- she got hit by a wooden crate right in the face. Dogshank distracted her with a fake punch to finally bring her down. Sky wasn't even mad. She was too tired. And freaked out, by blood dripping down, seemingly, from her left eye. She touched the area, sending a shot of pain thru her face and tried to open her, now covered in blood, eyelid. A wave of tranquility washed over her, when she discovered, that miraculously, she could still see.
That night, in her cell, she had to take care of a nasty cut on her left cheek, a bit too close to the eye.
The worst, however, was the moment, the ninja showed up. With Mei on board. Sky didn't find out, until her usual, schedualed dinner with Nadakhan, the only time of the day, when she was allowed to eat.
"Oh, by the way."-Captain interrupted her eating.-"We have guests."-Just as he said that, chained up Mei was brought into the room. Despite being hurt, she was still fierce, kicking and shouting threats at everyone. Sky's heart almost stopped. She could handle herself getting hurt, but not Mei! It was not her mess! She wanted to scream, to tear the djin into shreds, but she couldn't. She was handcuffed, to the chair. Not even saying about the vengestone bracalets she was forced to wear all the time.
"It turns out vengestone blocks not only elemental powers!"-Instead of focusing on Nadakhan's words, Sky decided to determine how hurt Mei was. To her relief, it was just a few bruises. No cuts or broken bones.
"So, I heard you got a special talent. Tell me my future, or the girl dies." The djin demanded. "I'll never tell you how to get infinite wishes! You hear!? I'll never let you get all powerfull!!"-Sky was not angry. She was furious. She wanted- No. Scratch that. She wished she could just slash this motherfucker's stomach open right then and there. She wanted to tear his head off with her bare hands. To cut his throat open and watch how he struggles to even breath in his last moments. To watch him choke to death on his own blood. "Infinite wishes? That's actually genius."-Nadakhan's words of delight, brought Sky back to the real world.-"Althought, I would need a bride..."-He looked at her. No. No! NO! NoNoNoNoNo! It wasn't happening. It was just a trick, right? She just doomed everyone! A few foolish words! It- It's gonna be the end of the world! Now one of them had to die. Either Mei or Sky. It depends entirely on Nadakhan's choices. And Sky had to ensure Mei wasn't gonna die! "Okay, whatever, just- just don't harm her! If you even touch her, I'm gonna-!" Sky started threatening Nadakhan. She knew, she had no power there, but she was at least gonna try. Before Mei could protest, Djin smiled awfully, with a mocking, but triumphant grin. "Or what?" He chuckled and then ordered. "Throw the girl to her cell! And you" He turned to Sky, while Mei was being dragged out of the room. "have a little game to play, before you go, little girlie."
After two hours of playing Scrap n' Tap, recieving a few more fresh wounds and opening some of the old ones, Sky was finally dragged to her cell to rest. She looked miserable, dragged by two crewman, bruised, bleeding from several not-so-minor wounds all around her body. The worst ones, weren't even cuts, but the places, where skin ripped and ruptured from the impact it couldn't withstand. She lightened up a little, upon seeing, that she shared the cell with Cole, Lloyd and Mei. When they started throwing questions at her, mainly about the state she was in, she just ignored them. Right when she was thrown into the cell, she sat up, and started ripping parts of her pants and bandaging her wounds with them. She was doing it so fast and without, normal for her, hestitation, like she was doing it every day. Mei was just heartbroken, to see Sky in such state. Her arms, face, chest and legs covered with cuts, wounds and bruises, so much, her whole skin seemed to have changed colour to an awful mixture of blue and violet. She was on this ship for what? Two weeks? Maybe a little more than a month? Her black leggins ripped and torn apart, to the point, where they looked more like long shorts, her black turtleneck stained with amounts of blood, that's never gonna wash off and her blue hoodie folded into a pillow. When Sky finished patching herself up, she quietly laid herself on the floor and fell asleep in no more than 10 minutes. She was clearly sleep deprived. Normally falling asleep took her more than half an hour, and now... She just... Fell asleep... She was like a wreck of a person she was before.
"Hey, what is she doing? We have to figure out an escape plan."-Lloyd was irritiated that Sky wasn't helping them. "Listen up. She fell asleep so early. That means her routine requiers it. And I trust it completely. Goodnight."-Mei laid down and rolled on her side, to face Sky. She didn't deserve it.
It turned out, that it wasn't, in fact wise of the boys to stay up late, because Doublonn came to wake every one of them up, around four hours later. They were forced to start moping the deck before sunrise. Sky, the person, who usually complained about everything and tried to make everything fun, was now silently moving the wet cloth across the wooden flooring. She didn't seem to notice Mei staring at her, or the boys whispering and shushing each other literally two meters away from her. She was just blankly staring at the floorboards she was cleaning. "I- I know it's not the best time, but maybe you'll want to hear a joke?"-Mei approached her awkwardly. The girl just shrugged. "Okay, what do you call a can opener, that's not working? A can't opener." Sky didn't seem to even react at this awkward attempt to cheer her up. "Oh, come on, smile a little." The girl did what she was told to and twisted her face into a big smile. It seemed real. It looked happy. But wasn't. Mei could see it in her eyes. Normally Sky would comment on this, usually very inappropriate and sexist phrase, but now she just performed the task, without blinking an eye.
At this point pain turned into rage. Mei was ready to cut Nadakhan's head off. To rip his arms away in the most painful manner. She stood up, ready to fight this guy. Even without her powers. Or her sword. Suddenly she felt a grip on her wrist. Upon looking down, she saw Sky, still sitting on the ground. Her fake smile now replaced by a sad, tired and worried face. Her eyes showed a mixture of fear, terror and concern. Mei crouched down once again. And just in time, because a crewman showed up.
"Hey! No talking!"-He shouted to Lloyd and Cole, who were standing on the side, making an escape plan the whole time. He walked up to them, grabbed one of their mops and started hitting them both with it, until they got back to work. Sky just closed her eyes and returned to work, praying silently, that she wasn't next.
Mei was heartbroken to see her reverse back. Four years earier, she was reacting like that to every type of yelling. Macaque discovered it. He just shouted at her during one of their trainings. He later said, that she suddenly hunched down, as to appear smaller, her eyes widened in fear, her heartbeat sped up and she did what he said, without batting an eye. Like she was afraid he was gonna kill her. When they later confronted her about this, fearing, that her parents could've been abusive, she just replied that she doesn't know why it happens and reassured everyone, that she experienced no abuse in her household.
Now seeing her, the person, who overcame that feeling, who, after three long years of learning how to get out of that habit, was standing up to almost everyone, especially when protecting younger people, hunch up in fear once again just broke something in Mei. Just, as Nadakhan was passing them by, she stood up, to Sky's utter horror, and shouted "I wish we were free of these vengestone cuffs!" The moment her wish was fulfilled, she jumped at Nadakhan to attack him. She summoned her sword and started swinging it around, trying to kill the djin. To cut his stomach, or throat, or- Lloyd and Cole started spinning, trying to attack anyone they could, now that the whole scene attracted the rest of the crew. "I wish us all outta here!"-Cole had a great idea. Well, if great means being dumped into the ocean, then yes, he had a great idea. As everyone began falling down to their deaths, Lloyd acted on an instinct and wished for the clouds to stop the fall.
"Oh, no! That was my last wish!"-He realized afterwards. "Mine too."-Cole agreed with him. The boys looked at Sky, waiting for her to do something, it seemed, but she didn't. After being caught by clouds, she barely stood up. Thet's when Mei's instincts kicked in, and she jumped at Sky, pushing them both down from the clouds, before anyone could do anything.
