Chapter 23
Isaac and Harper came back after an hour.
When Isaac walked in, I noticed that his shoulders were hunched over, his expression blank. Harper trailed behind him, pulling his shirt and trying to grab his attention, crying. "I'm sorry, Isaac... I was going to tell you but I was scared. I'm sorry," she sobbed.
When he didn't reply to her, her cries grew louder. "Isaac, I'm sorry! Speak to me! Stop ignoring me!"
"It's okay," he said. "Don't apologize. Just... I need a minute."
I made my way towards the two. Harper ran away to a corner, sitting down and hugging her knees. Piper walked over to her, kneeling down next to her and talking to her.
Isaac gave me a cold stare.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Nothing," he muttered.
"Why is Harper crying?"
He shrugged.
"Just tell me, Isaac. You can tell me anything."
"It's none of your business," he said through gritted teeth.
"Isaac..."
"Just go away, I want to be alone."
"Isaac, just tell me--"
"Just leave me the fuck alone!"
I backed away from him. "Okay," I replied calmly. "Just... Just let me know if you wanna talk about it, alright?"
I turned away from him, my heart pounding from when he'd raised his voice. I knew something had gone horribly wrong, but I couldn't pinpoint what it was. I heard him take a deep breath. "I'm sorry, Ava," he mumbled. "I didn't mean to... It's just..." Another deep breath. "I told Harper about our mother."
My blood froze. I stopped in my tracks. "...How did she react?"
"Badly. She didn't believe me at first."
I turned around, my gaze meeting his. "And then?"
His voice began to quiver. "She told me she knew where Dad was."
"And...? Where is he?"
He swallowed hard. "He was at the same hospital as her on the first day. He was injured real bad and the doctors tried to operate. But there were complications. She didn't want to tell me, Ava..."
"She didn't want to tell you what?"
What he said next made my heart drop. "I don't have any parents."
