Chapter 9
"It's a good thing all of this stuff is written in Portuguese," Derek mumbled sarcastically.
It was 11 am and we had just woken up. After showering and dressing, we all headed down to the hotel's breakfast bar. We were exhausted since we hadn't slept too much that night. We were each running on about four hours of sleep. But we were on a tight schedule, so we had to be up before noon if we wanted to do everything we wanted to get done.
"Well, at least there are pictures next to the items," I said.
"Yeah, but I can't tell what half of this stuff is," Chase said, squinting at the pictures.
"Let's just ask the waiter what's good here," Eli suggested.
"Sophia?" I heard. I turned to face the very attractive bell-boy from the previous night. He wasn't wearing his bell boy jacket over his white collared shirt. It seemed as if he had just walked in for work.
I quickly tried to rack my brain trying to remember what his name was.
"Damiano!" I exclaimed, finally coming up with it.
"Ah, these are your friends?" he asked, smiling at the others.
"Yes. That's Derek, Eli, Chase, and this is Alyssa," I said, pointing to each. "Guys, this Damiano. He's the bell-boy," I introduced.
"It's, ehhh, nice to meet you," Damiano said, smiling his cute dimple smile at them. "How you enjoying your first night?" he asked.
"We're kind of in jet lag. We're a little tired," I replied. I could feel the other staring holes into my face.
"Ah, yes. Jet lag. Many people complain of it," he said, nodding. I smiled at him. "I have to get to my job. I will see you later," he said with a smile. He turned to go and then I had an idea.
"Damiano! Wait!" I called out to him. He turned to face me.
"Yes?" he said.
"What's good for breakfast here?" I asked. He chuckled and then pointed out a few menu items that he said were his favorites as well as most other hotel guests' favorites. I thanked him once again before he left.
"Oh my God. Total hottie," Alyssa said.
"Oh, God," Chase said, rolling his eyes.
"And I think he's totally into you!" she squealed. I laughed and blushed, nudging her with my elbow.
"Shut up, he is not," I said, tucking my straight brown hair behind my ear.
"He totally is. He kept smiling at you," Alyssa said.
"Ok, we smile at Soph all the time. Doesn't mean we're in love with her," Derek said.
"Thanks, guys. Really feeling the love," I said sarcastically.
"Not that you couldn't be looked at in that way," Eli covered up quickly. I blushed.
"Yeah. I mean, if you weren't my best friend, I would totally bang you," Chase said. Eli and Derek smacked him upside the head.
"All right. We're for sure starting a douche bag jar for you when we get back home," I said, glaring at Chase as he smirked at me.
"How about we just order some food?" Eli suggested.
"Good idea," I grumbled, sending Chase another glare.
After eating the breakfast that Damiano suggested we try--which was delicious--we decided to head out. The weather outside was gorgeous and the sun was shining. The water from the sea could be seen from a distance, glistening and gleaming in the sunlight.
"This place is beautiful," I sighed.
"Should we walk or catch a cab?" Derek asked.
"I'd rather walk, but I don't think it'd be a good idea," I said.
"Yeah, the places we're hitting up today aren't in walking distances of each other," Eli agreed, looking at a city map we had found on the internet. Chase flagged a taxi down and we told the driver to take us to our first destination: Tram 28.
Tram 28 was an almost train-type vehicle. Tourists would gather on the tram to go sight-seeing and go through Alfama, a famous tourist neighborhood. We wanted to go to Alfama because it was known for its lively streets and hilly paths.
"I swear to God, if someone else touches my ass one more time, I'm throwing them off the tram," Chase mumbled in my ear. I chuckled and shook my head at him.
"Just enjoy yourself," I said.
"I can walk faster than this thing moves," he said.
"We're getting off soon, anyways," I replied.
"You know, I read that people try and steal your money here," Eli said to me.
"That's why I've got a fanny-pack," I said, grinning.
"You look ridiculous. I can't believe I'm letting you hang out with me while you have that on," Chase said. I rolled my eyes.
"Whatever. But when your wallet gets stolen and mine doesn't, don't come complaining to me," I said. He mimicked my words and pinched my sides. I laughed and punched him in the arm.
After about a half hour, we got off the tram to explore the neighborhood.
"Woah, there are so many people here," I said.
"This place is going to give us a killer work-out," Derek added, looking at the hills that had red-roofed buildings on either sides of them.
"It'll be fun. Come on," Alyssa said. Her and I linked arms and we started forward, walking into the crowd of the people shopping and exploring.
"I feel like I'm walking through a flea market," Chase said.
"Why don't you buy a new pair of sunglasses?" Eli suggested.
"What's wrong with these?" he asked, pointing to the aviators he currently had on.
"Well, for one thing, they cost more than everything I'm wearing right now," Eli said.
"Yeah, Chase. They are a bit flashy," I agreed, looking at him.
"So?" he asked.
"You're a sure-fire target. People will up their prices just because you so obviously look like a rich American tourist," Derek said.
"Because that's what I am," Chase said, smirking.
"You are hopeless," Alyssa said, rolling her eyes at him. "Oh! Look at this!" she said, pulling me over to a little shop that had decorated purses hanging in it.
For the next three hours, we walked around the town of Alfama, bickering and shopping and eating and taking pictures for Brooke. Everything we ate, we immediately worked off from walking around so much. We saw several different cathedrals and historical buildings, all of which we found fascinating, except for Chase, who voiced that he didn't see why exactly they were so amazing. At the flea markets, we bought little keepsakes for Brooke and for us to keep. After three hours, we were exhausted and decided to leave.
"Where to now?" Derek asked.
“Belem,” I replied.
Over the course of the next five days, we visited a multitude of places in Lisbon and the surrounding cities. We saw numerous cathedrals and historical landmarks, most notibly St. George's Castle.
"Ok, I've decided," Alyssa had said when we got to the enormous and beautiful castle.
"What?" Derek asked.
"I want a castle," she replied, staring in awe at the structure before us.
"Good luck with that," Eli said.
"Why doesn't America have any castles?" Alyssa asked.
"Because America isn't as elegant," I replied.
"Let's just move to Europe," Alyssa said.
"Yeah, and we can all buy a castle together and live happily ever after," Chase said sarcastically.
"Yes! That'd be so awesome!" Alyssa exclaimed. We all rolled our eyes at her.
"When you start rollin' in the dough, then you can talk. But right now, we're all college students that are severly in debt," I said.
"Well, when you, Derek, and Eli become doctors and get really rich, save all your money so we can buy a castle together," Alyssa said.
"We can't forget that Brooke will probably be famous one day," Eli added.
"Oh yeah! She'll make millions with all her future success," Alyssa said gleefully.
"You are getting way ahead of yourself," Chase said.
"Yeah. Who knows? Maybe all three of us will fail medical school and have to run from the government because we can't pay off our loans," Derek said. Alyssa lightly punched his arm and he chuckled.
One night, due to Chase's incessant begging, we decided to try and get into an exclusive night club in Lisbon. While waiting in line to be let in, we saw a sleek European car pull up and out of it stepped Cristiano Ronaldo. When Chase caught sight of the international footballer, he couldn't contain himself.
"Holy f*cking shit! Do you see him?! Do you see who that is?!?!" Chase whisper-shouted at us.
"Will you calm down?" I hissed.
"He's just a soccer player," Alyssa said, rolling her eyes.
"Ummm? Just a soccer player?!" he asked incredulously. "Are you insane?"
"We're kind of offended by that, too," Eli said, shaking his head at Alyssa.
"What?" she asked.
"He's freaking amazing. Almost the best there is," Derek explained.
"Whatever. He's not even that cute," Alyssa said, as he walked past us to get to the door. Now I gasped.
"Ummm? Do you not have eyes? Are you freaking blind? He''s totally the hottest person alive," I said.
"Even I have a crush on him," Chase said. We all took turns slapping his arm.
"We have to get into that club now," Derek said.
We couldn't get in. So we did the next best thing. We snuck in.
"I can't believe we got away with that," I said once we were inside. The club music filled my ears and shook me to my very core. I had to strain to hear the others' voices.
"Let's get some drinks!" Eli shouted over the sound of music.
"You go get them. The rest of us should split up and look for Ronaldo," Chase shouted back.
"We're never going to find him in here!" I yelled.
"There are way too many people!" Alyssa cried.
"That's why we're splitting up!" Chase said. We gave up trying to convince him to leave the famous footballer alone, mostly because it was too difficult a task to communicate effectively in the club. Also, I just wanted to get away and dance with a hot Portuguese guy. Alyssa and I made our way to the dance floor, immersing ourselves in the mass of dancing bodies. Almost immediately, two guys came up to us and asked us a question in Portuguese.
"What?" Alyssa yelled, cocking her head to the side. The two guys raised their eyebrows at us, nodding.
"American," one of them said with a thick accent. The other one smirked.
"Would you like to dance with us?" the guy smirking at us asked.
"Sure!" Alyssa giggled. The guy's eyes lit up and he took her by the hand, leading her to the middle of the dance floor. The other guy held his hand out to me. I scanned the crowd looking for the boys and saw Eli and Derek talking to some girls at the bar. Chase was nowhere to be seen. I shrugged and took the guy's hand and he took me to the floor.
After about an hour of dancing, I felt hot and sweaty. I made my way to where the bathrooms were, dodging dancing bodies and people making out. I emerged at a back corner of the club and sighed in relief.
"Jesus," I muttered, surveying the crazy crowd of clubbers. Then, I turned around and promptly bumped into someone.
"Uff!" I heard the person say.
"Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry!" I cried, looking up. When I did, I gasped. In front of me stood the infamous Cristiano Ronaldo. I felt my jaw drop slightly and only one thought passed through my mind: Chase is going to be so jealous.
"American?" he asked with a smile.
"Ye-yes," I stammered. He chuckled. "I am so, so sorry for bumping into you like that. I was just on my way to the bathroom because I'm sweating buckets and I feel really gross and I wanted to cool off a bit and you probably don't care so I should just stop talking," I said, the words coming out quick and jumbled. Ronaldo laughed.
"That's ok," he said. I took a deep breath and then smiled at him.
"What are you doing in Lisbon?" I asked.
"Advertising," he replied. I nodded, understanding.
"Well, I'm a huge fan of your's. You're an amazing soccer player," I said. He laughed and then smiled at me.
"Thank you," he said. "You are a very beautiful girl," he said to me. I felt my heart shoot out of my chest. Cristiano Ronaldo just called me beautiful!
I responded to the compliment by blushing like mad and giggling like a stupid fan girl. Which I was.
"My friend, Chase. You're like an idol to him," I told him.
"Really?" he asked. I nodded.
"He played soccer ever since he was a little kid. He watches all of the games," I said. "He's kind of the reason I know who you are," I added.
"Is your friend here with you?" he asked in his crisp accent.
"He is, actually. You don't mind if I call him, do you?" I asked.
"Of course not. Always happy to meet my fans," he replied. I grinned and pulled my phone out. I figured he wouldn't be able to hear me if I called him, so I texted him instead. He appeared next to me so quickly that I wondered if he was standing nearby the whole time waiting until I summoned him.
"Cristiano Ronaldo, this is Chase," I said, introducing Chase to the footballer. Chase stepped forward, a goofy smile on his lips.
"H-hi," Chase stammered.
"I hear you are a fan of mine," Ronaldo said.
"Well, I mean. You're freaking amazing. Anyone would be crazy not to be a fan," Chase said.
"There are many who aren't," Ronaldo said.
"And those are just the idiots that don't recognize real talent," Chase replied.
We spent the next ten minutes talking to Ronaldo from games to clubs to what we were doing in Portugal. At the end of our conversation, Chase and I both got pictures with him and before we bid him goodbye, Ronaldo kissed my hand.
"I am never washing my hand," I said, staring after his retreating back. "Ever," I added.
"I wish he kissed my hand," Chase mumbled. I looked at him, raising an eyebrow. "Did I just say that out loud?" he asked, his eyes wide. I laughed and shook my head at him, patting his shoulder. We went back into the crowd to look for the others. "I swear to God if you tell the others I said that, I will hunt you down," Chase threatened.
"I'm going to tell them regardless," I said, laughing.
"And you call me the douche," he scoffed.
"Because you are," I said. He rolled his eyes.
When we met up with the others, we both dove into exaggerated accounts of what we had just experienced. I think we could all agree on one thing: Lisbon, Portugal was definitely a success. We were hoping that our next destination, Spain, would be just as amazing.

A/N: Ugh. Who hated this chapter? I hated this chapter. I REALLY disliked how I wrote it. But I don't really care anymore. I mean, the last chapter got 9 votes, which was kind of really disappointing. So now I'm just writing this story to write it. I don't care who reads and who votes and who comments. I'm just writing it for those of you that asked me to continue it and I'd feel bad for not finishing it.
So yeah. Comment and vote if you want. If not, whatever. I don't care.
XOXO
