chapter thirty three.

Walls could talk — Halsey
CYNTHIA HAD SPENT ALMOST EVERY MINUTE with Miguel since he got home but, she decided to leave him alone while he did his physical therapy. She knew he was still embarrassed about his legs, and didn't want to push him in any way. Cyn knew that the time would come where he felt better about it.
So for now, she was cleaning her area in the apartment for the first time in months.
A full trash bag later, she was taking the whole thing to the dumpster.
"Cynthia?" A familiar voice spoke behind her, the girls eyes widening.
"Theo? What the hell are you doing here?" Cyn dropped the trash bag to the ground and within seconds, pulled her friend into a bear hug. "Where have you been?"
"After I got out of the hospital... I was looking for my aunt so I could stay with her and she uh." Theo rubbed the back of her neck. "She's not really in the best place right now so, Johnny's letting me stay with him."
"Johnny? As in Johnny Lawrence?" Cynthia's jaw dropped slightly. "Our sensei Johnny?"
"That's the one." The Antonetti boy nodded his head. "Shannon called him, and he agreed to let me stay, I think he thinks Robby will like him more because of it? I'm not sure why he agreed."
"This is crazy." Cyn shook her head lightly. "So you know what happened to Robby then."
"Yeah..." Theo trailed off. "He ended up exactly where I didn't want him to go."
"I'm sorry—"
"Hey, guys." Johnny clapped his hands together, looking pretty psyched for some reason. "I see you've reconnected. You want to help me whip Diaz in shape? I've got a few plans."
Theo and Cynthia exchanged knowing glances, both of them realizing things were about to get interesting.
CYNTHIA ROLLED HER EYES AT JOHNNY'S idea of waving a porno mag in Miguel's face to get him walking. Like the total guy he is, Theo agreed that would help too so, she was left leaning on the guardrail somehow looped into the plan. They watched as the Diaz boy talked to his therapist, and as Johnny threw down the fishing hook connected to the magazine.
The gross, dirty, magazine.
"What's this?" Miguel looked upward toward the trio completely confused. "Theo? What are you doing here?"
"Long story." The Antonetti boy responded with a shrug.
"This is a collection of the tastiest babes of 1988. Not gonna get to see em' unless you grab it." Johnny said in a completely unconvincing, and even creepy voice.
"Okay..." Miguel trailed off and lazily leaned forward for the magazine before their sensei pulled it back.
"Wow, I honestly can't believe that you just reached for it like that. Or at all, Miggy." Cynthia raised a slight brow and shook her head.
"Don't blame him, there's some hot chicks in here." Johnny defended proudly.
"He's right, I seen them." Theo confirmed as he leaned on the railing too. "The late 80s was a great time in history."
"Men are disgusting." Cyn rolled her eyes and looked at her best friend. "You already reached for it, might as well try again."
"Honestly, I could just find these pictures on my phone." Miguel admitted, still looking up towards the trio.
"It's not the same, chicks look hotter on the page. You won't know till you get up. Mouth's just being a downer, don't listen to her." Johnny said as he swung the magazine back and forth in the Diaz boys face. "Or you can keep getting foot rubs from that pansy ass therapist."
"To think, I actually tell people you're a good person." Cynthia mumbled, shaking her head lightly.
"Okay, okay." Miguel reached again, and failed again.
"Weak. Diaz, I thought you were the all valley champ." Johnny encouraged, leaning forward on the railing.
"Diaz, Diaz, Diaz!" Theo chanted over and over.
Miguel reached higher and higher, till he was pushing his arms upward and out of the chair.
Then, he fell.
"Oh, shit!"
CYNTHIA RAN HER THUMB ACROSS MIGUELS HAND AS they sat side by side. She could tell after all the pushing from sensei, that he was upset. To be honest, she knew Miguel wasn't really happy at all since he got out of the hospital.
... and it absolutely killed her.
"I hope you know that everything is going to be okay, and that one day, we are going to look back at this and see it as a time that made you stronger." She spoke sincerely, trying to provide as much comfort as she could.
They had watched as a solemn Carmen left the house, and started crying.
"My mom doesn't even have faith i'm going to get better, what am I supposed to do?" Miguel shook his head lightly, fighting the tears that threatened to spill down his eyes in puddles.
"Miggy, she believes in you. It's just hard for her to see you like this... so.. sad." Cynthia explained, shaking her head slightly.
"So why aren't you crying?" The Diaz boy questioned, tilting his head to the side.
"I'm not crying because I decided its not going to help me anymore. I cried when I watched you fall off that balcony, I cried when I decided I was going to quit karate because of it, and I cried when I watched you every day in the hospital." The Sari girl let out a loud sigh. "I'm all cried out now."
Miguel nodded, understanding where she was coming from before he took a deep breath.
"What if I never get better again?" He asked, now looking away. "What if I can never get out of that stupid chair? Or walk again?"
"Don't say that, you will." Cynthia squeezed his hand lightly. "I know you will."
"... but what if I don't. Will you keep being my friend? Will you stay?" That was what he really cared about. It had been him and her against the world for a long time now.
He couldn't even fathom what life would be like if he lost that.
"How many times have I told you that you have me forever?" Cynthia asked, her eyes searching for the answer.
She's say it a thousand times if he needed it.
"Cynthia, I—"
Carmen came through the door followed by Johnny, who had a devilish grin on his face.
"I have an idea."
JOHNNY TOOK THE PAIR THROUGH A MUSTY AND HOT smelling hallway, filled with all types of scary looking people. Cynthia kept her head down as she pushed Miguel forward, not knowing what the hell their sensei had planned. He always got them into weird situations, and it was times like these she wondered why the hell she listened to him.
"I thought this place was scary from the outside." Miguel mumbled lightly. "Where are we, Sensei?"
"It's a field trip." Johnny threw his bag on Miguel's back. "You two need to follow my lead."
"Something tells me this is not gonna be good." Cynthia sighed and shook her head as she came to a stop behind Johnny.
"Woah woah woah, nice try, come back when they are twenty one." The guard said, referring to the two teens.
"Yeah, that's gonna be tough. He'll be dead by then." The Lawrence man spoke, as a matter a factly. "Should be dead already. Every day is a gift, and he's got a bucket list. Getting past that door, with his girlfriend is one of them."
Cynthia's heart fell to her feet at the idea of being called Miguel's girlfriend.
"Alright." The man nodded and pushed the door open for them. "Good luck, kid."
As soon as the door opened, a large crowd of people came into view, all of them screaming at the top of their lungs.
"That was surprisingly easy." Cyn commented in Miguel's ears as she leaned down, in order for him to hear her.
"I know, right?" He replied with a laugh, shaking his head.
When they made it to the middle of the crowd, Cynthia immediately realized they were at a Dee Snider concert. His long hair swayed on stage as he sang, and everyone danced to the words. Cyn couldn't remember ever going to a real concert before so, this was awesome.
"How is this part of my physical therapy?" Miguel asked loudly.
"It's not." Johnny shrugged and reached down into his bag, pulling out beers for each of the teens. "Just forget about all that stuff and have some fun."
"Really?" Cyn questioner with furrowed brows, staring at the can.
"Yeah, screw it." Johnny replied with a confident nod.
Cynthia laughed and clinked cans with her best friend, both of them grinning.
"YEAH!!" Miguel yelled, embracing the fact that it was time to have fun.
Maybe this was one of sensei's good ideas.
As the music got louder, and she drank more of her beer, Cynthia found herself dancing more, feeling more free. Her hand found it's way into Miguel's as she did, like it found it's way home. For the first time in awhile, they were both just genuinely happy.
Then... his foot moved.
