chapter thirty one.

Lucky — Jason Mraz

CYNTHIA WAS SHAKEN UP BY THE REVELATION that Theo and Robby were cousins. She had really been contemplating talking to the Keene boy, especially since what he had done to Miguel. Then, there was the Diaz boy, who she had been dreading visiting ever since she found out.

Not because she didn't want to see him, but because she felt like she was betraying him in a way.

"Hey." The Sari girl spoke with an awkward smile, slowly walking into the room.

Miguel's face lit up automatically as his head turned towards her.

"I didn't except to see you today." The Diaz boy commented, pushing himself up with his arms.

"I know I didn't come yesterday, i'm sorry." Cynthia frowned as she made her way over, planting herself next to the boy.

The whole Robby and Theo thing, plus finding out that Miguel was paralyzed in his legs was stressful, and she had been staying in bed contemplating everything since she got home from the hospital that day.

"Don't worry about it." The Diaz boy reached forward to take her hand, noting that she was obviously out of sorts. "You're here now, right? Plus, I got a lot of visitors yesterday."

Cynthia felt her heart sink into her stomach as their fingers interlocked, her eyes floating to his table to avoid eye contact. Her eyes got caught on a card on the table, one that said "you octopi my thoughts.". She bit her inner cheek as she read it, realizing who it was from.

"So, uh, Sam finally came to visit?" The Sari girl smiled lightly, using her free hand to push her hair behind her shoulders.

"Oh, yeah, she did. I guess she just wanted to see if I was okay. She told me that you two are getting along." Miguel spoke, embarrassed as his hands went clammy.

"I wouldn't say getting along, I was really trying but she hasn't talked to me much." Cynthia laughed awkwardly, rubbing the back of her neck. "I know it's really stupid but I haven't had anyone there for me lately, and i'm just super tired of being angry, I figured maybe making up with her would help."

"Just give it time, okay? You guys have a lot of history. I'm sure things will fix themselves eventually." The Diaz boy smiled awkwardly, hoping that his advice was helpful.

"You always know the right thing to say, Miggy." The Sari girl felt her face warm up as she smiled at the boy. "Enough about me, any updates on... all this?"

She gestured around the room, just wanting him to be okay and out of the hospital.

"Some doctor is supposed to come out of state for a surgery, I don't want to get too happy about it though." Miguel lightly shrugged his shoulder, a frown on his face.

"When we first met, you knew nothing about karate. Then, you beat the odds and became the All-Valley champion. If you can do that, what can't you do, Miggy?" Cynthia spoke firmly, wanting to drive it home that she believed in her best friend no matter what.

"I had a little help that time." The boy responded with a laugh, his grip on her hand becoming firmer, and more confidant.

"This time, you'll have help from your doctor, and your mom, and everyone else you love." Cyn took a deep breath as she spoke. "and if you need someone to take care of you when your surgery is over, I may know someone who's not afraid of skipping school."

"I may take her up on that offer."

CYNTHIA WAS ACTUALLY SMILING WHEN SHE she got home for the first time in forever. She had spent around two hours with Miguel before he needed to be moved for some tests, and she actually enjoyed every minute of it. It seemed like as long as she had him, all the other friends that had left, or betrayed her didn't matter.

... but she also knew she'd have to deal with all her drama sooner or later.

"Sensei?" She questioned as she seen the blonde man angrily fumbling with his keys. "You still live here?"

She hadn't seen him at his apartment in weeks, so it was safe to say she thought he found elsewhere to live.

"Oh, uhm, hey mouth." Johnny turned around, looking a lot better than be did the day that he went to see Miguel in the hospital. "Just trying to get inside and have a beer."

"What's with the suit?" Cynthia pushed passed the man and snatched his keys from his hand, putting them into the lock. "You are dressed like a tootsie roll."

"I went to an interview." The Lawrence man looked down toward his suit, offended by the girls comment. "What's wrong with the suit?"

"It's too big for you, and the wrong color." The Sari girl pushed the apartment door open with a shrug. "How'd your interview go?"

"The douchebag called me unstable and kicked me out." Johnny shrugged as he walked into the house. "Feel like having a ham sandwich?"

"Is the ham expired?" Cynthia raised a slight brow, earning a slight shrug from the blonde man. "Fine, but if I die of food poisoning, it's on your unstable ass."

"I'm not unstable." Johnny defended as the girl walked inside, closing the door behind him. "There were good reasons for every time I got arrested."

"That sounds like something a criminal would say, sensei." The Sari girl shrugged sarcastically, her face scrunching up slightly. "Speaking of that... I uhm, you never told me Theo and Robby were cousins."

"What was I supposed to say? He's not my nephew, I didn't think I was obligated." The Lawrence man shrugged.

"Well, he wants to know Robby is okay..." Cynthia trailed off, knowing this conversation would start getting uncomfortable. "Do you know where he is?"

"If Theo doesn't know where he is, there's a reason." Johnny responded bluntly as he went through his fridge. "Mind American Cheese?"

"What—..no. Why won't you just tell me where he is so I can tell Theo he's okay." The Sari girl was practically begging at that point.

She didn't want to have to get more involved in this situation more than she already had, especially since Miguel's trust was on the line.

"I'm remembering why I called you mouth now." Johnny threw a few items on the counter then bent down to dig for a pan.

"You know what? Save the sandwich for another time, I gotta go." Cynthia sighed slightly, heading for the door to leave.

"He's in juvy." The Lawrence man admitted with a slight sigh. "He got put into juvy for what he did to Miguel."

Well, things were getting interesting.

AUTHOR'S NOTE—
Split this episode in half so I could deliver more chapters for this book lmao, i'm so attached I don't want it to end.

Since it's been awhile, who do you ship with Cynthia? (When I first posted this book everyone shipped her with Hawk and it seems new readers lean towards Miguel) but obviously you could ship her with any of the boys.

Hope you enjoyed!
