chapter seventeen.

Bad day — Daniel Powter

CYNTHIA YAWNED AS SHE GOT UP AND OUT OF BED the girl feeling more tired than usual. She hadn't really slept, tossing and turning while thinking about all the things back at the dojo. If she was going to get things back to usual, it was going to take a lot of hard work.

The girl walked to her bathroom, quickly brushing her teeth before she left to the kitchen. Her aunt wasn't there eating a bowl of cereal like usual, making her furrow her brows. It was weird that the woman wasn't following her usual routine, very weird.

"Bianca!" The girl yelled at the top of her lungs, not receiving an answer.

The Sari girl sighed, walking around the house trying to find her aunt, to no avail. She was nowhere to found. So, Cynthia poked her head out the window, spotting the woman downstairs in the entrance to the apartments. She was on the phone, yelling at someone.

At who? Cyn didn't know.

"B, I have to go out!" The girl yelled as she opened the door, the older woman dismissively swiping her hand to make the her go away.

Cynthia pouted her lips slightly, turning on her heel before she slammed the door behind her. She wasn't sure why that had made her so upset but, it did. Maybe it reminded her of her parents who she so desperately tried to forget, the ones who hadn't contacted her since she moved in with Bianca.

The ones who didn't love her anymore.

"Today is going to suck." She mumbled to herself, going to her room to pack her bags for practice.

She was right.

INSTEAD OF STOPPING TO TALK TO HER FRIENDS once she got in the dojo, Cynthia made a beeline straight for Sensei's office. Her fists were tightly balled, teeth clenched as she did. The girl couldn't believe her eyes when she seen Theo getting chummy with the other students in the dojo.

Why was he here?

"Want to explain to me what Antonetti is doing in this dojo, Sensei? Because i'm not really comprehending why the guy who kicked my ass is here!" The girl yelled as soon as she walked in, the man staring blankly at her.

"Yeah, i'm going to have to call you back.." the man waited a few seconds before hanging up the phone and looking at his student, his hands clasped together. "Want to rephrase that? I don't understand brat language."

"What I want is him out of here, he isn't Cobra Kai material, okay? He's bad news." Cynthia held onto her temple, letting out a large sigh.

"We need all the students we can get, you know that, you've been here since the beginning." Johnny reasoned, the girl not wanting to understand. Deep down though, she did. "... and aren't you dating Hawk? Antonetti shouldn't matter if you are."

"Of course you think it's all about dating, I just—... you wouldn't understand. Just forget it." With tears almost coming from out of her eyes, the girl exited the office, throwing her bag down in the corner before she walked over to her friends.

"Did I say you could speak?" Was the first thing she heard from Hawk, talking to one of the boys before, Chris, who was obviously frightened.

"Guys, look, they're just messing with you." Miguel spoke up, joining the group and shaking hands with them, everyone laughing in unison.

Except Cyn, her eyes were narrowed in on the enemy, and his were sending her a glare right back.

"Cyn, can we talk... over there?" The Diaz boy pointed to the corner, snapping the girl out of the staring war as she nodded her head slightly, the pair made their way over, the girls friend looking scared to speak. "This morning... I kind of heard Bianca's conversation on the phone."

"Okay? What was it about?" If the Sari girl was honest, she just wanted him to spit it out, sooner rather than later. She already felt like this had been her worst day since her parents left her.

"I think your dad is coming back." He whispered, the girls heart dropping into her stomach as she held onto her chest.

Then, the bell for the dojo opened, and a man none of them had ever seen walked in.

"Hey, uh, who's that?" Hawk asked, walking up to the pair as he pointed at the man towards the front.

"I don't know." Miguel looked worriedly to his best friend who's eyes just bore into the wall across from her. She didn't know what was wrong, or why she was reacting to the news of her father this way but, it felt like she couldn't even think straight.

She nervously bit into her lip, trying to maintain her composure around such a large group of people. She was supposed to be one of the best people in the dojo, that doesn't exactly hold when people see you balling your eyes out. Plus, she didn't feel like being called a pussy for showing some type of emotions.

"Line up!" Johnny yelled to the group, smacking his hand onto the girls shoulder. "Come on, go!"

Everyone obeyed orders, even Cynthia who mindlessly made it over to her usual spot between Hawk and Miguel. She stood there, looking from her Sensei, to the mysterious old guy, then to her best friend, then her boyfriend, and truly realized things had gone from a peak high for her, to an all time low in the matter of hours. Or maybe she was being a tad bit dramatic.

She honestly couldn't tell anymore.

"He's just an observer. Pretend like he's not even here. Mr. Diaz, warm them up." The Lawrence man spoke, making the boy nod as he walked up to the front.

"Fighting positions!" He yelled loudly, everyone in unison following that order.

The rest of the practice? Well, that went pretty blank for her.

SITTING ON THE STEPS OF HER APARTMENT was something that Cynthia had grown to like. At first, she didn't enjoy the musty old railing, or cracks in the cement but, now, she appreciated it, like she had grown to appreciate everything. Things just happen that way after you've been through so much.

It was even more relaxing to sit there, looking up at the stars with her boyfriend.

"Sensei was getting pretty worked up today." The Moskowitz boy spoke up.

Until he goes and ruins it.

"Really? I didn't notice." Cynthia responded, her eyes still looking upwards towards the opening in the ceiling of the building. "I've had other things on my mind lately."

"Do you want to talk about it?" Hawk questioned, positioning his head to look at her, sending the girl a smile. "I know we haven't been hanging out as much as we used to—"

"It's not you, our relationship is honestly the least of my worries right now." The Sari girl admitted with a laugh, feeling the boy shift uncomfortably underneath her.

"What is that supposed to mean?" He questioned, eyebrows furrowed and lips turned downward, making the girls heart sink into her feet.

"No, I—" Cynthia sighed, realizing she'd have to explain her troubles in order to get out of the deep whole she had just dug herself. Problem was, the whole feelings thing wasn't exactly in her comfort zone. "I just heard my dad might be coming back, and my aunt has been acting really weird and I don't know if she called him here, or if i'm going to have to move, or—"

"Move?" Now, the pair had completely sat up, both of them not even touching anymore. "What do you mean move? He can't just take you like that after he left you here."

"Yeah, well, I wouldn't put it past him." Cyn replied shakily, holding her hand up to her face. "I just want things to be how they were a month ago, it was all so... perfect."

A silence longer than usual lasted between the two before Hawk took the girls hand into his own, both of them sighing as they looked towards the ground at the same time.

It really was a bad day, she just hoped tomorrow wouldn't be worse.
