Pandora's Box
The session started off better than he'd expected. Dr Marr was obviously very interested to hear what had caused his sudden slipup. She almost seemed pleased when he admitted he'd overslept because of a date. Sort of. She didn't pry out any specifics about the more intimate details, but she marked it down as progress that he'd had a mindless night of passion with an android. He'd stressed that was all it was. Sex...Great sex. They went over how it had come about, touching on the subject of consent. Or lack thereof.
"But you'd said during the course of your evening that you would never have sex with an android." Marr looked over her notes, levelling her dark eyes at him almost meaningfully. Reed shifted in his seat, crossing his legs defensively. Phck, I wish she wasn't so damn perceptive. "What made you change your mind?" It was unusual for people like Reed to change their minds so quickly, and they often never did.
"I guess I didn't...not consciously, at least. I told you, I was drinking...I'd had more than a bottle of wine by then, so I was pretty out of it when we left. I don't even remember getting to the apartment!" He watched defensively as she levelled him with a scrutinising gaze, a look that almost made him roll his eyes. "Don't even think about it! It wasn't rape," he added firmly, watching Marr scribble away on her pad. Just as I thought this session was going well...
"I didn't bring it up." Don't pretend you weren't thinking it, lady!
"I was drunk, sure, but it's not the first time I've gotten laid like that...I wasn't joking when I said it was good, either. I don't regret it." Marr relented with the smallest of nods. It was something she might raise again at a later date. She pressed a little more about the man he'd been with. It was out of character for him to just go off with someone like that. What had drawn him to the android? Reed replied that it had been part of an agreed exchange. Witness details for an interview. Sure, the interview had turned into more of a date, but it had still been their agreement. Had he felt anything? An initial attraction to the android? He'd noticed he was hot, sure. Most androids were. He didn't sleep with most androids. Touché. How had the interview made him feel? A little nervous. A little uncomfortable. Flirty. Confused. Maybe a little guilty.
"How would you describe Aaron Hughes as a person?" Marr asked curiously, looking up from her notes with an analytical air. Reed sat back thoughtfully, unsure what to say. He didn't know the guy that well. They'd only had their first proper conversation the night before, and even then, it had been work related. Mostly. That morning, Aaron had almost seemed like a different person. Soft, affectionate, and somewhat unguarded. He also had that underlying confidence. A dominant streak that made him seem sure he'd get what he wanted. It's certainly worked for him so far...
"Charming, cocky, full of himself...I guess I like his sense of humour." They were all positive things, as far as Marr could tell. All reasonable things to feel about someone you'd just met. "We just sort of clicked...We made some mutually beneficial exchanges." It was true. He'd wanted footage. Aaron had wanted an interview. Aaron had wanted some downright dirty sex that made him feel powerful. Reed had wanted rough, domineering treatment. Both mutually beneficial exchanges.
"Do you think you'll see him again?" Reed's lips quirked at the question.
"It wouldn't surprise me." They hadn't made an appointment or anything, but something about the way they'd parted in the car earlier just made him sure they'd meet again. They'd exchanged a little small talk on the way and Aaron had agreed that if they needed anything else for the case, he'd do what he could to help them out. Pulling over at the precinct, he'd thanked him for taking part in the interview and waited for him to leave. It had been a normal parting besides the fact that Aaron had dragged him in for a searing mess of a kiss before telling him he'd see him later. Cocky fucker...
Reed managed to get through the rest of his session without too much hassle, sidestepping any talk of his brother, or rather, that he hadn't contacted his brother. He talked about how his cravings were making him feel. Restless. Antsy. Fucking foul. It wasn't exactly affecting his work, but it wasn't helping. Nines had offered himself up for sparring, giving him an extra option for when Connor was busy. He felt like he had a lot more pent up energy with the withdrawals. It was pretty inconvenient, but he'd get used to it.
"That's also a side effect of eating properly." Reed couldn't argue. He'd been eating a lot more, and even started gaining weight. Luckily, he was working out and active enough that it was turning into muscle rather than flab. His meals were healthier too, since Nines was picking most of his food. The session ended on a positive note. His physical and mental health were showing an improvement. Not enough to stop their sessions, but still an encouraging sign.
"Somebody had a good night last night," Tina teased from the breakroom as she saw him heading towards his desk with the collar of his jacket turned up. She was already grinning as he turned to her, looking like the cat who got the fucking cream. Connor turned in his seat with a similarly amused expression. Fuckers are ganging up on me now? Reed was indignant as he flipped them off and continued on towards his desk. No way was he giving them details. Especially not with Nines looking so...Down?
"Sure, I had a date with your mum last night, T, and we were dancing all night long." He smirked as Tina brought her coffee into the bullpen and followed him to his desk. She slapped his shoulder as she got behind him, looking down with a playful scoff as he leaned back in his chair. He was wearing his usual grin as he waited for her inevitable comeback.
"Gav, we both know you couldn't handle my mother. She's too much woman for you." He couldn't argue with that. Whether it was the fact that Mrs Chen was a woman, and therefore not his type, or that she was scary as hell, both were right. The angry Chinese lady was someone he hoped never to get on the wrong side of. He'd watched her twist the head off a chicken with her bare hands and gut it without flinching. It was rare to find old school chefs these days. Most bought their meat pre-packaged. Mrs Chen disagreed. The fresher the better. "So...how was it?" Tina prompted as she leaned on the back of his chair. Connor also hummed his interest, looking expectant as he crossed his legs.
"What is this? The Spanish Inquisition?" Reed scoffed in disbelief as he looked at them. His hand automatically reached for the coffee he knew would be there, only it was cold. Looking down at the cup, he realised it wasn't coffee. Nines had brought him water. He sighed and drank it anyway. He didn't need to remind himself it was for his own good.
"No one expects the Spanish Inquisition!" Hank's gruff voice piped up from his desk, lips quirking as he continued to type up the report he was working on. Reed almost spat his water while Connor and Nines looked across with yellow LEDs. Tina frowned a little as she looked at them cluelessly, apparently left out of the joke. Guess I shouldn't be surprised about the androids not getting the reference...Reed watched as both Nines and Connor took on a look of understanding as their LEDs returned to blue.
"Seriously? Jesus, T! What the hell did you even watch growing up?" he demanded as he looked up at his clueless friend.
"Actually, that reference is from a nineteen seventies British television show. Statistically speaking, it's more surprising that you understood the reference than that Officer Chen missed it," Connor piped up kindly. Reed looked almost offended by the idea. Not being born was no excuse for ignorance! Tina nodded her agreement, nudging his leg with her own. They really were ganging up on him this morning.
"It's a classic!" Hank excused, sounding almost as incredulous as Reed. Connor was quick to point out that it was less surprising that he knew the skit, considering his parents would have grown up in the correct era. Throughout the exchange, Nines was strangely quiet. Silvery eyes stole glances at Reed every so often, but he largely remained focused on his terminal. Reed thought he'd escaped their previous conversation until Connor pointed out the marks littering his neck. "Oh, phck off, Tin Can!" he grumbled from behind his cup, hoping to hell his cheeks hadn't turned red. He certainly felt a little hot under the collar.
"You left with Mr Hughes after your shift ended...You were also late to work this morning and failed to return for your car last night," Connor pointed out with a smug expression. He'd already quizzed Nines about his absence earlier, though Nines had seemed reluctant to discuss it. Connor watched as Reed became more defensive, hunkering a little lower over his terminal as he rolled his chair to the desk. "The outside camera footage also showed Mr Hughes dropping you off this morning, and that was quite a parting..." Connor prompted, hazel eyes brimming with curiosity. Tina had already worked out her own conclusions, whistling and patting his shoulder in approval.
"I never thought I'd see the day." She was surprised as Reed didn't clap back at her with some witty remark or friendly insult. Maybe he was a little more sensitive about it than she'd first thought. He looked pretty pissed as he got to his feet and held an expectant hand out to Nines. Nines eyed his hand reluctantly before plucking a cigarette and handing it over without a word. Somehow, that just annoyed him more.
"Not everything has to be phcking office gossip!" he growled as he stalked off towards the stairs. Tina levelled a questioning look at her two android companions. So, who's going after him? Their LEDs span yellow as they met her gaze and glanced at each other. Her expression was somewhat expectant as she folded her arms and looked between them. Nines shrugged and returned to work. He hadn't taken part, so there was no reason it should be him. Connor tried to avoid eye contact before Tina sighed, shoving his head lightly on the way by.
"Coward." She had a few minutes before she was due out on patrol. Gavin was about where she'd expected him to be. Leaning on the low wall, looking out over the city like he owned the place. "So, you had a good night, but you don't want to talk about it?" she broached gently as she ambled over and leaned on the wall beside him. Gavin sighed out the smoke he'd been holding, rolling the cigarette's tip idly along the dirty white ledge. He shrugged evasively. "Been a long time since your last night out." It took a few moments, but he slowly nodded his agreement.
"Six months? More? Not had a lot of free time since the revolution." That was true. They'd all been working longer hours since most of the android workforce left, not to mention the humans that couldn't adapt to the new equality rules. There'd been some improvements over the past month or so, though. Connor and Nines had managed to inspire a few more androids to sign up, and a few new recruits had made it through the academy. "It's not a thing...We just went out and fucked." Green eyes darted up to gauge her reaction. She wasn't laughing, so that was a plus.
"No harm in a little fun, Gav." His shoulders tensed a little, despite the reassurance. She huffed and gave his arm a light jab, leaning against him as they looked out over the city. "No one's judging you, dickhead. We were just curious." He relaxed a little at that. She'd known him long enough to read him like a book. He didn't like being talked about, and a known anti-android supporter suddenly fucking an android was a hot bit of gossip. "So? How was it?" she asked curiously as she looked up at him.
"Uh, good? I guess?" The smirk she was wearing told him she knew better. "I haven't been fucked like that since the academy," he relented with a small huff of amusement. Tina snickered smugly, dark eyes almost sparkling with mirth. She knew the moment she saw that little hop in his step. He didn't even realise he was doing it. Whenever he got a good fucking, he came to work with this buzzing positivity and sauntered around like a hotshot. The positivity was pretty reserved these days, but there was no mistaking that little skip. She hadn't seen this Gavin in months, maybe even years.
"Maybe you should bend over for pretty-boys more often." It wasn't his fault the pretty-boys were always taken or androids. "I owe Connor a twenty...I was sure you'd fall into bed with Nines before anyone else." She was surprised as she noted the way his body drooped somewhat at the news. He looked away as Tina raised an expectant eyebrow. He couldn't go running after dropping a tell like that.
"Not a phcking chance, T. You know how I feel about androids, especially non-deviant ones. He's my partner, not a phcking Traci." Despite the firm grunt, he looked more than a little pissed off at the limitation. She wasn't sure what he was more annoyed about. That Nines wasn't a deviant, or that he'd treat him like a Traci if he had the chance. She scoffed as she looked at the gaping holes in his arguments.
"Gav, you haven't been anti-android in months!" she scolded as she bopped his head, watching him scowl at the street below. He'd worn the label for so long he felt naked without it. "And I never insinuated that you'd treat Nines like that...I just thought he was your type." Gavin couldn't argue with that. If he were human, he'd climb him like a fucking tree. Tall, dark, sharp witted, with the demeanour of a serial killer. He couldn't be any more his type if he tried. If he didn't know better, he'd say someone had taken his teenage fantasy and given it legs.
"Yeah, well...I'm not going to fuck a guy who doesn't have a choice," Gavin grunted with a tone of finality, accepting Tina's sympathetic squeeze on his shoulder. He avoided looking at her. No way was he going to talk about it. Nines was...Nines. He didn't want to put a name to whatever fucked up feelings he had for his partner. I'm not catching feelings for a phcking android! Especially not one I work with! He finished the thought with a note of finality, effectively putting the lid on the box Tina had pried open.
