Chapter Thirty Three // Eye Contact

A/N - I FOUND THE REVISIONS OF THE CHAPTER, SO I DIDN'T LOOSE ALL OF IT !! GOD BLESS, AND ENJOY !!

I walked straight into the house, and made a beeline for the phone. I pulled out Cherry Valance's number, desperately needing to spill my emotions to somebody.

I pulled out the number out of my pocket, looking it over.

0074 - 5681 - 3384 - Cherry, it read.

I picked up the phone, and slowly dialed the number. I could feel my hands shake in anticipation.

The phone rang.

"Hello?" asked a female voice. I took a deep breathe.

"Is this Cherry Valance?" I replied. I heard a soft giggle.

"It is. Who's this?" she asked again. I gulped.

"It's Ponyboy Curtis. You told me to call you if I wanted to talk," I stated. I heard an "ohhh" sound in the background.

"Oh, yes! Hi Pony! What's going on?" she said. I took a deep breathe.

"I don't know what to do about Johnny. He's in Italy, and I- I'll never see him again," I sniffled. There were a few seconds of silence on the other side of the line.

"Have you thought about going to Italy and bringing him back?" she asked, suddenly. I wiped away a few of my tears.

"W- what? What are you talking about?" I asked, confused.

Am I about to regret this conversation? I asked myself.

"I mean, why don't you go to Italy and bring him back? Why don't you go find him?" she questioned. I let out a sarcastic laugh.

"How the fuck am I going to get to Italy without money, Cherry?" I shot back. I clenched the phone.

"..Get a job down at the DX with your brother. I'm sure he could find you some work," she suggested.

I cringed when she mentioned Soda. I still wasn't over the fact that he had walked out when I told him about Johnny.

But then, I remembered Steve. Maybe Steve could get me a job!

I smiled a bit.

"That's a great idea! I could fly over there and bring him back.. I think he'll be eighteen in a few months too, so he'll be legal!" I exclaimed. Cherry laughed.

"Good luck, Ponyboy Curtis," she stated. I smiled.

"Thank you, for trying to fix my love life, Cherry Valance."

-

I was sitting on the couch, when Two Bit and Dally came out of the kitchen. Two Bit was holding a beer, and laughing, while Dally was smoking a cigarette.

"Hey guys, is Steve around?" I asked. They looked at each other.

"Sorry Ponerboner, he's at work!" slurred Two Bit. Dally smacked his arm.

"Don't mind him, Pone. What's going on?" questioned Dallas. I bit my lip.

"I need to talk to him.." I said, trailing off. Two Bit giggled.

"Are you trying to get into Stevie's p- pants?" he questioned. Dally smacked him in the back of the head.

"Aw, shut the fuck up! Jesus Christ! Steve ain't like that, and you know it!" yelled Dal. I widened my eyes.

Why was Dally acting so weird all of a sudden? I thought to myself.

"Wow, okay.." I stated, trailing off. Dally rolled his eyes, but still had a suspicious look on his face.

"What do you need to talk to him about, man?" asked Dally. I shook a bit.

"I need him to get me a job down at the DX," I mumbled. His mouth was sort of agape.

"But..why?" he asked. I suddenly came up with a plan.

"I'll tell you if you drive me down there."

-

Dally and I were sitting in the car, getting closer and closer to the DX.

Two Bit was sleeping in the back seat, snoring. We couldn't leave him alone at home when he was hammered.

"So, what's this all about?" he snapped. I gripped onto my seat belt.

"I want to get money so I can go to Italy and bring Johnny back," I replied. Dally glanced at me, before putting his eyes back on the road.

"Are you sure that's such a good idea?" he questioned. I sighed.

"Yeah, yeah. I know it's gonna be hard and everything, but Johnny is everything to me, Dal. He doesn't deserve to be held hostage by his father," I stated. Dally let out a whimper.

"Dal, are y- you.. crying?" I asked. He wiped his eyes.

"No! Shut the fuck up! Why would I cry?" he yelled defensively. I sunk into my seat.

What was going on?

"Why am I hearing colors?" asked Two Bit suddenly. I turned around and smacked him on top of the head.

-

I ran up to the DX, and threw open the door. Steve and Soda were sitting at the cash register, enjoying a coke.

I sort of froze when I saw my brother, but I continued forward.

"Hi, Ponyboy," started Soda, looking at everything but me. I brushed him off.

"Yeah, hi," I started, simply acknowledging his existence. "Steve, can I talk to you in the back?"

"Yeah, sure. C'mon," replied Steve, pulling the back door open. I followed him.

"What's going on, buddy? You never come down here," he said. I looked into his blue eyes.

"I need you to help me get a job at the DX," I stated boldly. He stepped back a bit.

"What? Why? What's this about? You don't know the first thing about cars!" he exclaimed. I couldn't help but laugh at his statement.

"I'm going to use the money to go to Italy and find Johnny," I stated. He cocked his eyebrows.

"You would really do that for him?" he asked. I nodded my head.

"I would do anything for the boy I love," I replied. Steve's cheeks turned bright pink.

"O- oh. Yeah, of course!" he said.

What the fuck is wrong with him now, too? First Dally, now this?

"Yeah. I don't even have to be a mechanic! I could be a cashier or- or," I started. Steve cut me off.

"I'll see what I can do, Ponyboy," he stated. I tackled him in a hug.

"Thank you, Stevie!" I shrieked, thankfully. He stroked my hair.

"Anything for you, kid."

-

Steve and I walked back into the front of the store. Sodapop was sitting on a chair, going through a catalog.

"What is that?" asked Steve. Soda looked up at him.

"It's a catalog about the new.." he started. I didn't bother listening in. I didn't understand cars at all.

Suddenly, Dally walked into the store.

"Hey, Ponyboy! Are you ready to go? Two Bit has been complaining about wanting ice cream-" he started. Suddenly, he was staring at Steve.

"Oh, hi Dally. I didn't k- know that you drove Ponyboy here," he stuttered. I glanced at Soda. We gave each other a look of confusion.

"Yeah, he sort of begged me. Sometimes he can be a little shit," he replied. I smacked his arm.

"Let's go, Dal. We don't want Two Bit to get angry," I rushed. Dally and Steve gave each other weird looks, before looking down at the ground.

"Yeah, let's go," mumbled Dallas.

-

When we got into the car, I had one question.

"What's going on with you and Steve, Dallas?"

..Pause.
