Cocky Idiot #1

Stepping onto the tiled floor of the cool, air conditioned office, my eyes cast a quick scan around before settling on the thin and lean young woman sat behind the counter. She'd been typing away on her computer before I'd walked in. With a fixed smile on her face, she stood up and smiled.

"You must be Makayla Summers, yes?"

I nodded grimly, hating the very fact that she looked so chipper. Most receptionists were. It's not like they had anything better to do than clack away on a keyboard right?

"We've been expecting you," she said warmly, bending down to retrieve something from her table. She picked up a file, opening it and then took out a few documents which she skimmed through quickly before handing it over to me.

"Here's a map of the school, and a list of the subjects you'll be taking and course objectives along with the syllabus. Your timetable is included as well so you shouldn't have much trouble finding your way to your classes. It's a pretty big school but I'm sure your friends will help you out."

You mean, if I make them in the first place.

Giving the woman a wide and fake smile, I took the documents and then wordlessly, exited the office. She probably had more to tell me and I hated to be rude but honestly, I just wanted to get the day over with. Why delay the inevitable, right?

My head was practically stuck into the map while my eyes absorbed the directions as I steered myself towards the school building. It was huge and I gulped nervously, knowing I'd have a hard time trying to find my way. If I didn't already have a horrible sense of navigation, this would certainly add to it.

Pushing the glass door, I slipped into the hallway of the school. The walls were painted a bright white, with several doors on both sides. It reminded me of a hospital. Hospitals scared me, hence, this wasn't the best school setting for me to be part of. My stomach twisted as I looked at the map and back at the dull, endless hall in front of me.

The diagram on the paper was different from the one ahead of me. Had I taken the wrong entrance? Or was I in the wrong building?

I was positively lost.

I stood there for a few minutes, turning around in different directions repeatedly. The lines on the paper did not at all match the hallways stretching out in front of me. I couldn't make sense of any of it.  Why? Why was this happening? Did I just have a streak of bad luck running through my blood?

The most sensible thing to do would be to go back to the office and ask them for directions, regardless of the fact that the lady would think I was a complete and utter moron. A high school senior who didn't know how to decipher a school map was a rarity. I just happened to belong to that category. I started to backtrack out of the building and back in the direction of the office, when I heard a voice call out to me.

"Hey you!"

Hey you? Not the best way to address someone, let alone someone like me but I didn't let that stop me from turning around slowly. A tall, dark haired boy ambled over to me. He had a smirk on his face which made irritation flare up on the inside, as if he was mocking me even though he had no idea who I was.

"My name is Makayla, not 'hey you'," I said, trying to tame my anger.

"So you're new." He grinned, assuming the worst but the truth of the situation I was in. "And you're lost."

"I can find my way out by myself, thank you," I replied curtly, breaking eye contact with him as I scanned through the map that I'd been given. Surely, I could. I've been to a bigger school than this. It shouldn't be that hard at all.

But the boy didn't pay attention to what I had said. Instead, he took a few steps closer to me and peered at the map over my shoulder. Glancing up at him, I noticed his eyes move over to the contents of the paper I was holding as that smirk on his face grew wider.

"For starters, may I politely point out that you're on the wrong page?"

He chuckled to himself, tugging lightly at the edge of the page for me to release my hold. When I didn't, he took it away  roughly without even waiting for my consent. Looking through, he handed it to me again and jabbed at the surface of another page I'd flipped past.

"This is where you are now."

I admit, I felt kind of stupid. It was written in black and bold letters at the top: Higher Secondary Building

Why hadn't I seen it before?

"And knowing that your sense of direction is as horrible as your reading skills, I may as well take some of my valuable time to show you around. Though I do have much better things to do than to help a new girl."

"Oh please," I snorted, my palms itching to slap the cocky expression off of his face. "I can take care of myself."

Raising an eyebrow, he crossed his arms across his chest and said in a challenging tone, "Oh really? Let's see then."

--------------------CHAPTER END---------------------

A/N: Yess. Damien (who is yet to introduce himself) is played by the gorgeously dorky Dylan O'Brien. <3 Perfect for him.
