Katie Collins - His Who?

"Well honey, that's great! I'm so glad you've found new friends over there!" My mom's tone was vibrant over the phone. But it was forced. She was always busy doing something else and she never had time for me. Now was no difference.

"Honey, I have to go now! I love you and hope you have fun at the recital!"

"Mom, it's a party," I answered dully.

"Alright then. Prom! Bye!"

Sighing, I shut my phone and stopped pacing around for once to look at myself in the mirror. Was this alright?

I was dressed in black skinny jeans and a white top which had only one sleeve, causing a slanting neck-line to appear. Not revealing at all, yet pretty non-class compared to most girls. My black hair was down, falling neatly down to my waist with no sight of tangles in there.

I preferred not to wear make-up but yet my complexion was slightly flushed, my usually dark eyes bright with anticipation.

Would Damien be coming tonight? He hadn't responded to my text and I was dying to know how he was doing. Would he still be angry with me?

"Makayla!"

I heard a car honking from outside and putting it together with my father's yelling, I figured Leo must be here. Leaving my room, I skipped down the stairs and saw my father opening the door up to let our guest in.

And so he entered.

Leo was dressed like...well like Leo. His light blonde hair was ruffled and messy as usual which added to his boyish charms in a way. He was dressed casually, in jeans and a t-shirt but had a fixed smile on his face as he met my father.

"You must be Mr. Summers, it's nice to meet you," he said, shaking hands with dad.

"So you're Makayla's new boyfriend?"

I glared daggers into my father as I walked past him to Leo. His eyes met mine, looking over me with a growing smile. I pinched him on the arm as I stepped out of the house. "You coming?"

"I apologize on behalf of my daughter. She's not all that welcoming sometimes."

Groaning, I trudged down the porch steps and towards Leo's car - a black Porsche. He followed me after a brief goodbye with my father and I whistled, letting myself in, saying, "Nice ride."

Grinning, he slipped into the drivers seat and replied, "Thanks."

Then, we were off.

Nick's house was farther away than I'd imagined. The drive there took a good thirty minutes during which Leo and I mostly didn't talk. It wasn't an uncomfortable silence that encompassed us but a very quiet one nonetheless. Neither of us said a word. He drove and I looked out the window, waiting for the minutes to pass by.

My mind was still fixed on Damien...on how this night might turn out. Maybe I'd get him to open up to me though I seriously doubted that. We'd only just met three to four days ago... he had no reason to be open to me. And if ignoring my text had been intentional, he'd been trying to make that point. I just hadn't gotten it yet.

When we did arrive at Nick's house, it was far bigger than I'd imagined in my head. Large and spacious, it took up twice the size my/Damien's house did. We could hear music playing from the inside as we got out of the car. I followed Leo up the expansive front porch and towards the front door.

He didn't even knock and just took a step in, opening the door to a wide living room that greeted us. Speakers boomed party music in the background and a number of teenagers were dancing with drinks in their hands.

I squeezed my way though with Leo, who'd taken hold of my hand sometime as he led me up the stairs and to (where I supposed was) Nick's room. Knocking on the first door to our left, a soft "come in" responded.

The door creaked open and Leo and I stepped inside. Seated with Nick on his bed was a girl with bright blonde hair that fell down her waist in elegant waves. Her brown eyes sparkled as she saw us and she grinned. "Hi, I'm Amy!"

Leo let go of my hand, almost reluctantly, as I moved forward to shake hands with Amy who got up. She looked younger than us by a good year or two. Yet her bounciness seemed to rub off on me as she gave me a hearty shake and wide smile.

"Nick's told me so much about you!"

"Has he now?" I asked, smiling back at her.

"Yep! I quote 'there's a new girl in our class and Damien's got the hots for her'." She grinned, flashing her perfect set of white teeth and I couldn't help but laugh weakly.

"Sure he does." I sat down next to Leo on a small couch that was propped near the edge of the room but not too far away from the happy couple. Nick seemed different in Amy's company - so much more happier than he did at school. She seemed to have that effect on everybody as even Leo cracked a little bit of a smile with her around.

"I apologize on Damien's behalf. He can be a little bit overwhelming at times," she said warmly as if she was talking about her own brother.

"A little bit?"

Her smile widened at my question. "You'll grow to like him, past the drama and all that." She winked and I looked at Nick for an answer. Had he told her?

Just when I was about to say something else, the door jerked open. Damien poked his head through a crack and smiled at us. "You guys are here! We've been looking all over the place for you!"

We?

Opening the door wider, he stepped in...and with him, followed a girl. Short brown hair and blue eyes, she looked at us with an almost artificial smile on her face.

Leo sighed and muttered a, "Hi Katie," as most of the others did. With questions in my eyes, I looked at Damien, waiting for an introduction. And I got one.

Meeting my eyes, Damien forced a smile to his face as he said in that perfectly calm tone, the one I'd heard the last time I'd seen him, "Makayla, this is Katie Collins: my girlfriend."

My eyes widened in shock, my heart slowing down within my chest as my eyes swerved between Damien's face to this 'Katie Collins'. His arm was slung around her waist, holding her unreasonably close to him when less than twenty-four hours ago he seemed to be interested in me.

Yet, I forced a smile and stood up from the couch. Reaching out my hand, I received a hearty shake from Katie who flashed a brilliant smile at me. "It's nice to meet you!" She exclaimed, laughing.

I didn't say anything more as I settled back onto the couch. Leo shot me a look of concern but I pursed my lips, not saying a word as I watched Damien with a furtive glare. He met my eyes briefly before turning to Amy and Nick to greet those two.

Amy however, frowned slightly as she said 'hello' to Katie. She mouthed something angrily at Damien who either hadn't seen her or chose to ignore her. Sensing the sudden change in atmosphere, partly caused by Damien's little 'treat', I got up and cleared my throat.

"So Leo and I will be right back," I said. The others looked at us, Damien fixing his eyes on me with a curious glare as if he was wondering whether this was some plot to try and escape. But I wasn't going to lose here. And I wasn't afraid to show that I didn't care.

Taking hold of Leo's hand tightly, I tugged him off the couch and he followed me blankly out the door as I marched the both of us out. The fury from within began to seep onto the surface and I let go of his hand as we both headed down the stairs and back to the crowd.

I squished my way in between the dancing couples, Leo following me quietly as I found my own way to the kitchen. No one was inside. Bare and empty, I closed the door behind me after Leo had entered and finally let out my emotions.

"The nerve of him!" I half-shouted, marching back and forth with my arms crossed tightly across my chest. Leo watched me, leaning against the counter with no expression on his face, simply taking me in.

"I mean - one second he's all Flirty Flirty-son and the next he's showing up at a party, claiming he has a girlfriend!" My voice grew unusually high at the last bit and I took a deep breath to try and calm myself down. It didn't work.

"So you're jealous," Leo stated.

"No," I snapped. "It's just that I don't get him at all!"

"Like I said before Makayla, you barely know Damien at all."

"And whose fault is that?"

Leo didn't say anything more and with me fuming in front of him, I couldn't help but feel a bit guilty. This wasn't his fault and lashing the brunt of my anger out on him was unreasonable.

Letting out a sigh, I ran my hands through my hair before finally resting them on my hips. "I'm sorry, I just...needed a breather."

Leo smiled. "I understand. I'm glad I could be of any help."

And there it was again, that warmth in his voice that I rarely ever heard directed at me, or anyone else for that matter. Leo, too, confused me greatly. Most of the time, he acted like a robot. The next, he would be...human. It was a miraculous transformation for a guy like him. Or maybe I was just making assumptions again. I didn't know Damien at all, and I doubt I knew all there was behind mysterious Leo either.

Groaning internally, I looked away from his smiling blue eyes and asked myself the one question I'd been avoiding ever since I moved here: are all men on this planet such doofus-heads?

"None of us like her you know," Amy said, patting me on the arm. She'd joined Leo and I in the kitchen a few minutes after my brief outburst, coming down to get a breather herself. "We're still criticizing Damien on choosing her to be his girlfriend."

"Well are there any more that you guys are yet to tell me about?" I asked warily. Both Leo and Amy shook their heads, exchanging a secret gaze.

"Listen Makayla: I know how furious you are right now but don't let Damien know how you feel. He'll only-"

"I don't feel anything for him. The only reason I'm upset is because I've befriended a jerk."

Amy grinned and said with a shrug, "Have it your way. But just go with the flow, alright? Otherwise, he'll tease the living soul out of you later on if he knows how peeved you are with him, mistaking it be jealousy."

"Which it is not," I clarified. She nodded and then hooked arms with me, telling Leo, "It would be great if you could fetch us a couple of drinks. The guys want some." Leo gave a short nod, heading out to the refreshments table but Amy dragged me back up the stairs.

The party was jam-packed but no one seemed to notice the absence of the host who, when I walked in, was laughing rather nervously at a joke that Katie must have cracked. The gorgeous new couple had taken a seat on the couch that Leo and I had occupied, giving me no room but to join Amy and Nick on the large bed.

I could feel Damien's eyes on me and I knew he was watching me closely, intent on knowing how I was reacting to this. Instead, I grinned and nudged Amy lightly, starting a conversation with her.

The best way to look cool would be to act completely normal. Maybe that would successfully drive him over the edge.

--------------------CHAPTER END---------------------

A/N: So a lot has happened in this chapter, which I have a feeling you guys will be yelling at me over in the comments heh. Yes, Damien supposedly has a girlfriend even though he's been hitting on May repeatedly. Keep in mind that things are not always what they seem to be. ;) That is all I can say on the matter for now.
