4. Letters and Thieves
Hey,
I know I haven't written in awhile, but I've been very busy. Mom's condition is getting worse and I don't know what to do. I don't know if I can do anything and that's what scares me the most. I wish you were here to guild me through these confusing times. I don't really fit in the team, or at least I don't feel like I do. It's probably me just overthinking everything, but I can't help but wonder if that mysterious man is right. I know he isn't, but the doubts are already planted inside my mind and continue to grow.
I also am curious on what he wants from me. What would he have done if it was not me that wandered into that hall? Or why didn't he explain to me more? There are so many questions that I don't have answers to. I feel so lost.
I miss you,
Lana
I folded up the notebook paper and enclosed it into the envelope. I wouldn't send it. I had no where to send it. Instead, I placed it into my desk drawer along with the others. Eventually I would have to use a different drawer, a bigger one.
Bleep, bleep
My watch flashed a brilliant blue.
Suspicious activity on 43rd and 7th
"The job is never over," I sighed. In a roll of thunder and a flash of light I had changed into my super-suit. Heavy armor rested on my chest and shoulders. A battle skirt of navy blue swooshed at my legs. I grabbed my sword that was displayed on the wall. Jumping from my window, I flew into the night to 7th and 43rd.
As suspected one of the theatre's door was suspiciously open. Sure, it wasn't strange for the musical theatre's to be open so late, but the Lyric Theatre didn't have anything playing. But they did recently finish one. Earlier that day. Crap. My feet touched the ground silently as I peaked my head inside the box office. My eyes adjusted to the dark room. Red velvet ropes were pushed against the gold painted walls, but a few looked as if they were hastily thrown aside. A dim light illuminated the inside of one of the box offices.
"Hey!" I barked and heard a very loud curse and the thud of what sounded like a flashlight dropping. "Step out with your hands up and we won't have a problem." But the thief inside the box office remained quiet. I quickly and quietly moved to the side door and moved inside.
But the room was empty other than the empty cash box and other things that you would find in a box office. No one, and no sign of the cash. Who buys Broadway tickets with cash anyways? I cursed under my breath as my mind deduced where the person could go. There was only that door, and I went through it. With a turn of my watch's dial, the police were notified. I searched for this person, but like a ghost, they were gone.
The police arrived and I gave them a rundown about what happened. They thanked and assured me that they would catch the person.
Well, that was a night.
I flopped onto my bed like a teenager in those movies. Not as fun as it looks. I hit my head on the headboard. I changed into some pajamas, but after an hour of just laying in my bed on my phone, I passed out.
~.~.~
Hey,
I think I'm going to start writing daily again. These letters just kinda help me clear my mind and get my thoughts all out on paper. A few days ago someone was stealing from one of the theaters. Actually, it was near the theatre we saw Miss Saigon at. That's still one of my favorite musicals, but Bandstand, a new musical, is my now all time favorite. It would be really nice to see that with you.
Anyways, it would be really cool if you could meet the team. They're really nice and I think you would like them.
I miss you,
Lana
For the second time that week, I folded up the notebook paper and slid it into an envelope. I grabbed my jean jacket, and left to the Cave. The Zeta-tube zoomed me into the familiar room.
"Hey," a dark haired girl greeted as I walked in.
"Hi," I said questioningly before it hit me that she was the magician everyone talked about.
"I'm Zatana." I took her hand and gave it a shake with a smile on my face.
"Lana, it's nice to meet you."
"I've heard a lot about you," she said.
"All good, I hope." I laughed as I released her hand. I was shaking it for slightly longer than needed.
"Definitely." We walked to the main room where M'gann was in the middle of a baking spree.
"Everything okay? You're kinda cleaning out the pantry." I say on the counter and watched as she frantically pulled a tray of muffins from the oven. She placed them beside another tray of brownies, and next to that was a plate of cookies.
"Conner and I got into an argument. Baking takes my mind off what's bothering me," she explained.
"What happened?" Zatana asked. It must've been something bad because she was stirring that bowl of cupcake mix like it was the Joker.
"Nothing. Well, we just fought about what we want in our future. We see different things, and I don't know where it's going to lead us."
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear it. I'm sure everything will work out in the end." I reached over and grabbed one of those delicious smelling cookies. "In the mean time, I suggest you leave the kitchen. We'll be out of flour by the end of the day."
"Yeah, I guess your right. I'll find something else to do after this batch." M'gann angrily spooned cake-batter into pink little paper cupcake holders.
"You know what? Why don't we gather the girls and have a girls night or something? We can go see a movie, maybe get some ice cream. I dunno, but we can do something to get your mind off that." I suggested and peeled off the paper wrapper of one delicious blueberry muffin.
"Ooh! Sounds good!" I watched as M'gann placed a tray inside the oven. "I could really go for some ice cream."
"Alright. I'll text Artemis." Zatana whipped out her phone and began texting faster than I had ever seen Flash run.
"Alright!"
This was going to be one hell of a night.
