2. The First Mission
"I've missed you." Mom's boney arms wrapped around my frame. She smelt like the hospital; like of rubber gloves and clean metal.
"I've missed you too Mom," I brushed away a strand of her loose hair. "A lot has happened since the last time I visited."
"Is Diana treating you well?" she questioned.
"Yes, of course. I've joined a team Momma, a team of superheroes," I said and began to explain. She listened with a gentle smile on her face.
"Did you like the watch?" She asked, gesturing to the cool metal resting on my wrist.
"I love it, but I did make a few modifications." I turned the time dial and a small holographic panel expanded.
"I wouldn't expect anything less," she gave a small laugh. "I'm glad you are able to."
"Hopefully, if I programmed everything right, should notify me when a crime happens near me, or if the team or Diana needs me. I plan to put your information into it, but if it gets taken I don't want your safety at risk." I closed the screen and it remained looking like a normal watch.
"No, no, that's okay. I'm fine, it's not like I'm going anywhere any time soon."
"Come on, don't say that. You'll be fine in a few weeks and you'll come home and see me off to Gotham Academy, where I want to go. I'll even pay the first time we get gelato at that one place-"
"Lana." Mom's cool voice interrupted my stream of rambles.
"Sorry," I sighed as I grabbed my bag. "I should probably get going. I'm supposed to meet up for training, and being late is possibly the worst idea when it comes to B.C.."
"Love you," Mom waved as I stepped out the door.
"Love you too."
~.~.~
"Balance, Lana, balance." Black Canary stalked around us like we were prey. The kind of stare that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on edge. I paired off against Robin, which was almost just as terrifying. He looked more muscular from the last time I had saw him, nearly a year ago. His lanky frame had begun to fill out. We practice the moves Black Canary showed us just moments before.
One thing I learned that day, the training mats in the Cave are not soft. Not even in the slightest bit.
"Thunderstruck: Fail." Even the floor was unimpressed. I cursed under my breath as I stood back up.
"Again." I nodded to Robin, who raised his fists in reply.
"You know we can stop any-" I cut off his words with a moved to sweep his feet out from under him. But Robin, being the fast thinking acrobat he is, leaped backwards into his hand and back onto his feet. His fist propelled forward, but I met it with the palm of my hand. As fast as I could manage, I wrapped my arms around Robin's waist. Leaning back, I slammed him into the ground.
"Robin: Fail."
"Alright," Black Canary's voice boomed over the sound of the training room, "Batman is waiting for you for a briefing."
"Am I going on this?" I whispered to M'gann as we hurried down the halls.
"Most likely," she smiled, "We've been getting newer people more often. You haven't met them yet, their on mission, but I think you'll like them. Anyways, Batman likes sending the newbie out with us first."
"Okay."
"There's been a break in at the Luther Corporation," Batman began, "and although the people themselves that run the company are villains, they hold important information. Whoever, or whatever, was after this information would do whatever it took to get it. See what's so important about it."
"Do we know anything else?" Kaldur asked.
"No, that's why we're sending you in. This is a recon mission, do not engage unless necessary," Batman said. With that, we loaded onto the Bio-ship. It was the first time I had ever been on the inside. I just wanted to see what made her engine purr. Biological mechanics was always something I was intrigued in.
"How long have you had her?" I asked as I traced my fingers against the dash.
"A while now," Miss Martian smiled. "But I'm not sure for how long exactly."
As we flew Kid Flash, Miss Martian, and I talked about how the Bio-ship worked. More accurately, K.F. argued with Miss Martian about how the Bio-ship worked. I was just having fun watching.
"Will you two just cut it out?" Artemis growled as she crossed her arms against her chest. "Jeez."
"Sorry babe," Kid Flash winked. Artemis looked like she was about to argue, but his wink rendered her a little speechless. I laughed a little. They were cute together, a nice little balance to their relationship.
"How much longer?" Robin complained.
"Not by much- Ouch!" Miss Martian grabbed her forehead in pain.
"What's wrong?!" Superboy tried leaping from his seat, but the tight seat belts prevented him.
"I-It's not me. She's in pain." Miss Martian rubbed her temples. "The Bio-ship, she's trying to prevent us from feeling it, but-" The ship began to shake and tip downwards. A yelp escaped my lips. This is why I fly by myself and not in ships.
With a series of jolts and shakings, the Bio-ship thudded to a stop. My body and head jerked about and then back of my head slammed into the back of my seat. I cursed under my breath as the jostling about halted.
"Everyone okay?" Aqualad questioned.
"I'm alright," Robin said.
"Good here," Kid Flash said.
"Could be better," Artemis grumbled.
"Yeah, yeah," Superboy said.
"I'm alright," I said.
"I'm okay, but the Bio-ship, she's going to need time to heal," Miss Martian said. The seat belts released us and we tumbled to the floor.
"What was that?" I asked as I rolled my shoulders.
"I do not know, but we must tread carefully." Aqualad stood on his feet. "Whatever it was, it will be back."
