1. So It Begins
There's nothing like flying. The wind in your hair, the whistling in your ears. Well, everything's great other than an occasional ambitious bird or nearly getting bugs in your teeth. Other than that, it's amazing.
"Keep your balance, Lana," Wonder Woman informed as she flew beside me.
"It's not like I don't know that," I muttered as I leaned into the wind. It was probably my overwhelming amount of a mixture excitement and nerves that cause my flight to be less than superior. It's not every day you leave your home to join a team of teens that fights crime.
"You may be a demigod, but that doesn't mean you can sass me. The team is waiting for you, we shall hurry up." Wonder Woman gestured to a short mountain.
"That's the base?" I asked as we dropped in altitude.
"It's bigger on the inside," Wonder Woman smiled.
"You've been watching Doctor Who again, haven't you?" I laughed, my feet touching the ground in a run.
"Of course! Matt Smith is something of an 'eye-candy.' If that is the correct term." She laughed, something that seemed to be happening more often. The longer she was away from Themyscira, the more educated she became on modern culture.
"How are the people on this team?" I asked.
"Good, you'll like them. They are a little... strange, but you'll fit right in."
"Sounds like my kind of people," I laughed as I ran my fingers through my hair. Flying is great and all, until you land with a bird's nest on your head instead of hair.
"They might seem a little distant at first, they're a close knit team, but they'll love you once they warm up," she said. Batman, Superman, and Green Arrow had all been waiting and talking quietly.
"Welcome, Lana," Batman said with his usual gruff voice. I shook his hand with a smile, the closest I'd ever been to Batman, much less touching him. It was... Surreal.
"Thank you for having me," I smiled as I tried to hid the building nerves and butterflies in my stomach. They were basically butterflies with machine guns just rapidly firing inside my poor stomach.
"It's our pleasure," Green Arrow said with that classic "Bachelor" kind of smile.
"Please follow us and meet the team." Supermen gestured with his hand and we followed him into the Zeta-Beam.
On the other side stood a small crowd of teenagers: A smily red head that decorated the room with laughs that knew as Kid Flash, the raven haired and glasses wearing boy that was Robin, pony tail Artemis, green skinned M'gann, blond Aqualad, and the buff Superboy.
"Lana," Robin smiled. "It's a pleasure to finally meet you. I've heard about the famous Thunderstruck."
"And I you, all of you," I gestured to all of them awkwardly.
"Come on in, we can talk in the sitting room." Kaldur smiled the kind of smile that was warm and inviting.
"I'll be back to check on you at a later time. Good luck," Wonder Woman patted my head before following the rest of the Justice League through the Zeta-tube.
"So what's it like being Wonder Woman's protégée?" M'gann asked as we sat on a lumpy couch. The couch felt as if it had been sat on more than a thousand times.
"It's really great," I smiled as I thought about the memories made. "She can be a little tough on me sometimes, but it comes with the territory."
"I know how that is," Robin laughed. We continued to talk like this, sharing stories about our times with our masters. I never was close to the other Justice League members, other than Captain Marvel, but I learned enough from just sitting with their protégées. It was nice hearing the stories no one else heard.
"... so my foot's stuck in a pie and the dogs are going nuts..." Kid Flash, or Wally as I learned, babbled on. My mind was preoccupied with thoughts and fears that came with being with new people and the idea of joining them permanently. The room filled with laughs as the ending was said, but I didn't catch it. I laughed a little, awkwardly and a little nervously.
"Anyways," Wally mockingly wiped away a tear that wasn't there, "What school will you be going to?"
"Well, I'm not really sure honestly. I want to go to one in Gotham or Central City," I explained. Those where my best options based on location and rank of school.
"You should totally come to the one in Central City," Wally winked and I laughed.
"I'll give it some more thought, but when I decide I'll be sure to let you know," I said.
"Gotham Academy is a great school," Artemis began talking about schools and I noted how Robin nodded along in agreement. Both schools sounded great in their own ways, the only problem that came with it was, where was I going to stay? It wasn't something I gave much thought and pushed to the back of my head. Another thing was I would have to test into Gotham Academy.
"Do you do any sports?" Kaldur asked. "The swim team at Central High is subpar."
"Currently, no I don't. But I wouldn't not be willing to try out for softball or soccer," I shrugged. "But I would probably have an unfair advantage, don't you think?"
"Yeah, it's why I'm not on the track team." Wally said with a gentle smile. M'gann talked about cheerleading and we all listened diligently.
Slowly the conversation drifted from fun to work as we began talking about the team and what it was like. The way they spoke with one another was family-like. They all cared for each other. Would I be able to even fit in a team so closely knit together already?
