The Betrayal
CAMERON.
“Turn the truck around,” I said.
“We can’t do that, Cam,” said Gail.
“I said turn the fucking truck around!” I shouted. “You all should be ashamed of yourselves. She helped us, she’s saved our lives several times and now that she needs us, you’re all just going to run away?”
“She went in there to save a friend and she saved more than just a friend. Are you all just going to walk away from that? If you are, I’m not. Stop the fucking truck, Hiro.”
“He’s right, guys,” Chloe said. “She didn’t have to save us tonight but she did after we’d all voted for her to be kicked out. She didn’t...She didn’t think about that tonight, we shouldn’t either.”
“All in favor of turning the truck around, raise your hands,” said Jimmy. One by one, hands were raised.
“They might have weapons and we have nothing but our powers and ourselves but that’s enough because we’re stronger together,” I said.
“Yes!” they chorused.
“Astrid, I need you to open a portal to Long Beach Port. Can you do that?”
“I can try,” she said. I took out my phone and brought up the picture of the port Hiro had sent to me and showed it to her
She closed her eyes and opened a portal. It led us straight to the port. They all got down from the truck. I looked down at Jemma and stroked her hair. I’ll be back,” I kissed her on the temple.
“Bring her back,” she said weakly.
“I’ll come back with both her and the cure, I promise.”
I got down from the truck and we ran to the harbor. The ship was already sailing away by the time we got to its dock.
KOWALSKI.
I poured myself a glass of whisky and groaned as I sat on the bed. My whole body ached. Those hybrid bastards had done quite a number on me. I took a sip from the glass and picked up a mirror to check my reflection. There was a line at the side of my temple that went down to my eyes. It was stitched but I knew it was going to leave a scar thanks to that bloody girl.
A knock sounded at my door and it opened. I smirked as she entered and she glared at me in response.
“I’ve done everything you’ve asked, you’ve gotten her. Now, tell me where my brother is.”
I mulled over her words and took another sip from my glass. “True, you have done everything I asked but you see, I don’t have your brother.”
“What?”
The look on her face was hilarious, I couldn’t help laughing. “Yo–You’re lying. You showed me that video of him. You had him tied down.”
I sighed. “Why do you people always think I’m lying when I say something? I don’t have your brother, kid. I never did.” I laughed. “That was just a photo shopped video and you fell for it stupidly. I don’t even know where your brother is.”
“You bastard!” she screamed and raised a gun at me.
“Ah ah ah, I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” I pointed at the walls of the cabin, “We’re in an enclosed space and sound travels faster in such places. Do you really want to be the dumb girl who decides to shoot the boss in a ship full of his men?”
“I’ll take my chances.”
“Now, Petra, don’t be naive. You know you’re at my mercy here. You shoot me and you’ll be dead before you leave this cabin.” Surreptitiously, I slid my left hand and in my pocket and grabbed my gun.
“I’m not the one staring down the barrel of a gun.”
“True, but...” I took out my gun and pointed it at her. Her face paled and she took a step back as I got off the bed. “Wanna bet on who gets the first shot? Put the gun down, Petra.”
She gritted her teeth and glared at me. “Put it down,” I repeated. She bent and put the gun on the floor. “That’s a good girl.”
“Let me make you an offer. Your pesky little friends will be coming after us. I know because they’ve got this solidarity thing going on which I think is pretty dumb. You are going to get them for me and send them exactly where I tell you to.”
“What makes you think I’d help you, you scumbag,” she spat at me.
“Well,” I cocked the gun, “I can decide to pull the trigger right now and be done with it but I’m feeling a little benevolent tonight. Besides, you’ve been betraying them from the beginning anyway. What’s a little more backstabbing to add your list of crimes?”
“I’m not helping you anymore.”
“From where I’m standing, you don’t have much of a choice.” She looked down at the gun on the floor. “Pick that and I won’t hesitate to shoot you in the head. What’s it going to be, Petra? You gonna be the girl that dies tonight or the one that does what the nice man asks of her and gets to live?”
CAMERON.
“We’re too late,” Ash cried.
“No, we’re not,” I said. The ship had already left the harbor but we could still make it. “Astrid, I need you to take me to the upper deck. I’ll check out the perimeters then you come back for the rest.”
She grabbed my hand and teleported to the ship’s deck. It was suspiciously empty. We were about to go through the hatch when Petra ran out.
“Cameron, thank God it’s you,” she breathed in relief.
“Petra? What are you doing here?”
“I saw them taking Sally away and I snuck in their car. I knew I had to help her.” She looked around and frowned. “Is it just you two?”
“No, the others are coming.”
“Good. I know where they’ve kept her.”
“Why didn’t you get her out then?” I asked. I could sense something wasn’t right. She and Sally were never friends. She had no reason to come help her.
“I couldn’t do it alone. This place is crawling with guards.”
“I’ll go get the others,” Astrid said then left. I peeked through the passageway she’d just come out from, it was empty. “Did you see her? How is she?”
Her face fell and I swallowed. “She doesn’t look good. She was badly injured, she couldn’t even get up that’s why I couldn’t get her out of there. I was trying to call you to come to help us but you didn’t pick up the phone.”
I frowned. I never heard my phone ringing. I took it out of my pocket and true enough, I had two missed calls from her. She was telling the truth. “I’m sorry. I must’ve muted it by mistake.”
The others arrived and Hiro’s eyes narrowed upon seeing Petra. “What are you doing here?” he questioned.
“She’s here to help,” I answered. “We’ll split up into two teams, whoever finds her first should leave. We’ll catch up with you. Astrid, come with me.”
“I think it’s better Astrid goes with them, in case they need help getting out,” Petra said. I nodded at Astrid and she went with the others.
Hiro, Ryan, Rayne, Ash, and Hakeem came with me. Petra led the way. We moved through passageways and went below deck. The whole ship was quiet, there was not a guard in sight which I found suspicious. “I thought you said the ship was crawling with guards?”
“It is, they must be on patrol or something,” she said and kept walking ahead.
“I don’t trust her,” Hiro whispered. “She wasn’t with us when we got attacked.”
“She snuck in their car to help Sally,” I said.
“No, I’m talking about before. She wasn’t there when I got to the school.”
She looked back and faced forward again. I frowned. Now that I thought about it, I never saw her either. “Where did you say she was kept again?”
“We are here,” she said and stopped in front of a door. I glanced at Hiro and he shook his head at me.
“Open it,” I said.
“No, I don’t want to go in first. What if there are guards in there?”
“Fine, I’ll go first.” I pulled the door open and entered. We were in the cargo hold and there were no guards.
There were crates full of the cure but Sally wasn’t in here. I turned.
“I thought you said she was in–“ I didn’t get to finish my sentence. The door slammed shut.
“That bitch!” Rayne yelled and kicked the door. The mole was never Grayson, it was Petra and we fell into her trap.
