25. Heart of a Woman
"Where my girls at!"
Today she had a meeting with the ladies of Petite Trois, or PT as many in their fandom called them. Three short-in-stature young ladies who made a massive impact a few years ago when they were just teens. When they split up they were only eighteen, they went on their separate ways and made another huge impact.
M'Liyah was the unofficial lead singer, the Beyonce of the group. Her beauty was out of this world, with long brown locs to her waist. And she was sweet as pie and humble about her status as a solo artist. She couldn't lie, she was lowkey jealous when M'Liyah's first solo album outdid hers by miles. But it was all love. Now at twenty-seven, she was married to the hot actor Donnie Sparks and they had their first child, a son named Donnie Jr. Her son was only a few months old.
Melody was the white girl of the group but could sing her face off like a sister. After dating a deadbeat guy for years, when the group broke up she left music for a bit and went into acting. While cast in her first TV show, she met and fell in love with one of her co-stars and married him. Her husband's name was Damian, and they had a brood of children now: Idris, Whitney, and Mariah. Yes, those names were after the actor and the singers.
Ginger Hollands was the wild child of the group. Tatted up all over, wild and crazy hair, brash attitude that did not give a fuck. Rumor was she was the reason the group broke up because she was jealous of the other two, but she knew that to be untrue. While she was a solo artist, none of her albums made much of an impact, but she did win a Grammy for a duo she made with a well-known rapper. She did not know much about her dating life, but she was not married like the other two.
"Bitch, you look good!" Ginger said to her when they were checking out the rehearsal space large enough that they each had their own rehearsal space. "What is in the air that has everyone all glowing?" Ginger looked her over. "You're not pregnant, are you?"
"Hellll no!" Hell, she had to actually do something to end up pregnant again. She was not opposed to more children, but she vowed never to have another kid unless the man she was with was the one. That did not necessarily mean a ring, but it meant a real commitment. The conversation of having kids had not come up with Rico because they were not there yet.
She wondered if their kids together would have freckles like him. Would a boy get his height from their father? Would they become a singer or an athlete? One thing she knew for sure, Rico would make some cute babies.
She just was not ready for that, and he was young, she figured he was not either.
"Can't women just look good and glow because we are that chick?" M'Liyah stated. She had her phone out, taking pictures of everything from the windows, the floors, the ceiling, and even the bathrooms. Petite Trois' team had already done a tour of the facility as well. Her cousin Sheila was also on the scouting team to find the location and she trusted her judgment.
"Or getting dicked down does the trick," Melodie said to them. "Please tell me it's that."
She couldn't even say that was the case. A lot of touching and kissing...no real action.
"Guys, I'm just happy is all. The album is doing well. The tour is about to be on point, my life is good." And she finally had a good man, not that she was ready to share him with the world yet. It was a good thing Rico was only a rookie and not world-famous, yet.
"Thanks for coming up with the idea of having us rehearse here in St. Louis. Now I get to spend all the time with my man," Ginger said.
"Your man? Who?" She had not heard a thing about who Ginger was dating. She was typically surrounded by celebrity men like her, but she had heard nothing.
"Oh, her man is a teacher," M'Liyah said with a smile. "Can you believe our little Gin is dating a regular guy?"
"And being a homebody with him, living with him, not going out and partying up like she is known for," Melodie added.
"There is nothing wrong with that." It was refreshing to hear that someone on Ginger's level could settle down with someone who was not all Hollywood like the other two ladies. They were both married to actors. They stayed in the limelight on both sides.
Whenever she became official with Rico, he would have to step into a world he knew nothing about.
"And what about you? Why the sudden interest in St. Louis?" Melodie asked her.
"You know...I wanted to be closer to my daughter. Spend more time with her. I can do that because my parents have her mostly. You know I don't believe in nannies, not full-time anyway. I didn't want to relocate her for weeks nor have her on the road with me constantly."
"It's hard girl, I know," Melodie stated. "I have three of them. Thank God for hubs who don't mind being stay-at-home daddy. We still have a sitter come in as needed to help out. We have three little crumb snatchers. Oh I mean, three little lovely darlings."
They all laughed at Melodie. One, she always thought she was a little hood because she came up around mostly Black people. Two, she loved those kids dearly and was always talking about them.
M'Liyah put an arm around Melodie. "You know, I look to you with this parenting stuff. I wanted a baby so much and...it was so hard when I...lost the first baby. But...he's the light of my world. I'm bringing Junior on the road with us. My mom will be there with me, taking care of him when I have rehearsals or on stage. I can't stand to be away from him for that long. I want to lay my head down every night and have him there with me."
"See, and they told me when I was pregnant at twenty that I should get rid of her. Had a career to think about. Fuck them and the people that think like that."
"Oh girl, same!" Melodie said. "You know I was eighteen when I got pregnant and nineteen when I had Idris. Fuck them! Women are just built differently, we can raise a baby and be successful."
It was great talking to someone in a similar situation to her.
"We've made it work. You're right."
"Girl, I would have a couple of nannies on standby," Ginger, who had no kids, chimed in. "There is no shame in having one...or two."
She had her parents, but they did not need to travel like that at their age. Maybe she should hire a nanny so they could take care of her while she worked on tour. She had to think about that and make a decision quickly.
"Okay guys, I have to be honest with you." They all stopped walking and gave their attention to her. She made sure she made eye contact with them all. "I have met someone."
M'Liyah let out a loud squeal. Melodie did a little dance. Ginger covered her mouth in fake shock. She could see how different they were and how that would sometimes not mesh within a group.
"What?" she asked, her eyes on Ginger.
Ginger looked as if she had something to hide but shrugged it off. "No surprise. I think you've never stayed single a moment in your life. Well...adult dating life I mean."
"Not true!" Partly true but she didn't like to hear that part. "I went three months of not dating before I met Rico."
She only went that long without seeing someone because she had sworn off men. That was her time to move on and grieve for that relationship, record her album, and focus on herself. Rico kind of happened. She was not looking to date someone new it all just happened.
"Rico?" Ginger tilted her head at that. "Girl! Please tell me it's that hot pitcher on the baseball team."
She was shocked that Ginger knew who he was simply by his name.
"Uh...how did you know that?"
"Duh! You've been caught at a couple of baseball games lately, and you don't seem the athletic type."
"Ooh!" Melodie and M'Liyah said.
"He's a cutie," Ginger said. "My man happens to be a big fan and I've watched a couple of games with him. So uh, score us some tickets."
"I can do even better than that. Come to a game with me and share the suite with me. Surely we will make a scene."
"Bet," Melodie stated.
That would be a sight for sure. The hottest trio coming out of St. Louis plus her. This could really throw the media off track.
A/N: I missed Ginger, M'Liyah, and Melodie! Can you imagine them all at a game together?
