Chapter 37
A few months later saw our favorite team in London, England, celebrating Christmas with Jemma and Ward's parents.
"Rose!" Mrs. Simmons shrieked with delight as she squeezed the girl tightly.
Rose wrapped her arms around the woman and smiled contentedly, "it's great to see you too, but be careful."
Mrs. Simmons let go of Rose and looked down, smiling as she saw Rose's protruding stomach. She set her hands on the sides of Rose's stomach and looked up at her, "how far along are you?"
Rose smiled and rubbed a hand across her belly, "5 months. The team was pretty excited when they found out, but John nearly fainted."
"Speaking of the team, where is everyone?"
"We're right here!" Jemma exclaimed as she burst through the door soon followed by Grant, John, Fitz, and Skye. Jemma ran towards both of her parents and smothered them both in tight hugs. Grant soon followed her in doing the same.
As soon as everyone had received hugs, Mrs. Simmons walked towards Skye, "you must be Skye, Jemma's told me so much about you."
Skye smiled at the woman, "nothing bad I hope."
"Not at all," the woman laughed. "Where are Coulson and Agent May?"
Skye explained the absence of the two senior agents, "AC's with the Avengers for Christmas and May's spending time with family. They both said to say hello for them."
"Well that's too bad that they couldn't come as well, but come on in!" Mrs. Simmons said as she ushered Skye into the living room where everyone else was gathered for presents, "there's presents just waiting to be opened."
Skye took a seat next to Grant and rested her head on his shoulder as Mr. and Mrs. Simmons passed presents around to everyone. To her surprise, they even had a present for Skye. Skye gently took the box from them and raised an eyebrow, "you got me a present?"
"Of course we did, Jemma's told us about everyone on the plane so that we would know what to get you guys."
Skye shook her head and smiled as she gently removed the paper, "you didn't have to get me anything."
"Of course we did! We can't let someone stay in our house for Christmas and not get them a present!"
Skye smiled at them and removed the paper fully, revealing a sleek silver flash drive. She looked up at them and raised an eyebrow.
Mr. Simmons explained, "it's a flash drive that makes your computer literally indestructible to viruses and hacks. We already know that you're a really great hacker and your computer is probably already really well protected, but this should iron out any kinks. It also extends the battery life of your computer and helps sort through data to making hacking much faster."
Skye's eyes widened as she listened to Jemma's father trail on and on about what her new gift could do. She looked at him in surprise, "you made this?"
He nodded, "yes."
She smiled at him and stood up to hug him, "thank you, I love it."
He smiled at her as she returned to her seat beside Grant, "of course, my dear."
The family spent the next hour and a half exchanging gifts, laughs, and stories before Grant whispered in Skye's ear, "put your coat on, I want to show you something."
She raised an eyebrow but did as she was told. She stood up from her seat and grabbed her coat, meeting him at the front door. "Where are we going?"
He smiled at her and rested his hand on her waist to guide her out the door, "it's a surprise."
She smiled as he led her out the door and into the backyard gazebo. They say down on the railing and Skye smiled at him, "it's beautiful out here."
"Yeah, it is," he agreed with her. It was now or never. "Skye," he stood up, "I've never really been great with words, or people in general-really," he started out, "until you came in to my life and turned my world around. You've made me a better person and you've changed me more than you know," he got down on one knee and Skye brought up her hands to cover her mouth. He gave her a small smile, "will you marry me?"
"Oh my gosh, yes!" she said as she flung herself at him and wrapped her arms tightly around his neck. She grinned wider than the Cheshire Cat and buried her face in the crook of his neck. "I love you so much," she told him.
He grinned, "I love you too."
She pulled back and held out her hand as he slowly slipped the engagement ring onto her finger. She looked at it and tears gleamed in her eyes, "it's beautiful."
He looked down sheepishly, "I'm glad you like it."
She put her hand on his cheek and brought his face down to meet her's, connecting their lips. She smiled into the kiss and he slowly deepened the kiss as he wrapped his arms around her waist and leaned her up against the bannister of the gazebo. He finally pulled back, "we should probably get inside."
She shook her head and smiled, "just a few more minutes. I want to stay here with you and pretend the world outside doesn't exist."
He grinned at her and threaded their fingers together, hopping back up onto the railing. She rested her head on his shoulder, "best Christmas ever."
