[34] Peeves And The Talking Pastry Cake
I entered the dreadful office but much to my surprise, her cat frames and other stuff was packed. Oh, I see. She would be shifting to the Headmaster's office from the next day.
Heaven forbid.
"Please take a seat, Miss Weasley."
I begrudgingly took a seat and she came to sit across from me in her own chair.
"Do you know why I have called you here, dear?"
I shook my head in a no, not wanting to talk to her about anything.
"I've noticed that you're not as unfit for being a Head Girl as I initially thought. True, there's that awful temper of yours and the terrible habit of talking back but other than that you carry out your duties well," she resumed in her fake sweet voice.
I wonder what all of it was about.
I was half expecting her to punish yet there she was, making me confused about what she was up to.
"So I will not be removing you from your post," she concluded, stating it as if she was doing me a giant favor, "besides, you have a very short time left at the school either way and will graduate soon if you pass your NEWTs that is."
Oh, now I see why she called me. It was another of her attempts to show the authority she had now by becoming the Headmistress.
"You can stay Head Girl until the end of the term provided that you behave well," she repeated, probably expecting a reply from me.
Well, I knew what she wanted to hear and just that once, I would comply because I was tired and wanted to go to bed.
"Thank you, Professor."
"Headmistress," she corrected me again, clearing her throat with that godawful hem hem.
I was waiting for either her to dismiss me or Davies to come up with a distraction.
And true enough, the latter happened because it didn't seem Umbridge was done with me just yet.
"Oh and one more thing that we have to address, dear..."
But her words were interrupted by a thundering crash. She got startled, and her face paled in color as a series of crashes followed.
"What is going on?" She stood up from her chair exasperated.
Time to set fuel to the fire.
"Headmistress Umbridge, could it be that the school is under attack?" I stated as respectfully as I could though deep down I wanted to laugh at how she had lost her calm.
She too was well aware that You-Know-Who was back and gathering his forces. The mass breakout of Azkaban was proof enough.
He could attack Hogwarts too if he wanted to. But Umbridge and the Ministry were playing the roles of ostriches with their heads buried in the sand.
"Hogwarts under attack? Preposterous," she remarked but I could see her almost trembling.
But as the headmistress, it was her job to check that everything was safe so she had to step out of her office and I followed close behind. The crashes seemed to have come from the Great Hall so we went in that direction.
However, when we reached there, nothing was out of place except Peeves swinging upside down from the ceiling.
"What were you doing?" She screeched but of course, telling Peeves off for something usually ended up in him doing that very thing more.
"Pastry cake," he laughed, pointing over at Umbridge, "didn't know pastries could talk."
"How dare you talk to me like that? I am the Headmistress, you insolent poltergeist!"
He blew a raspberry, swinging close to her with his eyes dancing in amusement, "Professory Dumbledore sir is the Head Professory. Not talking pastry cake."
Oh dear, that was gold. The look that broke onto Umbridge's face was worth watching.
I caught sight of Davies signaling me to get away from Umbridge. Oh, that means there's something massive about to happen.
Seeing that Umbridge was distracted by Peeves, I quickly made my escape, joining Davies in the corridor leading to the staircase.
"Watch," he mumbled and flicked his wand carefully.
The rope on which Peeves was swinging snapped and the poltergeist dived in Umbridge's direction like an asteroid from outer space.
She shrieked, stepping back in alarm but there was a crazy glint in Peeves' eyes who began chasing her, thinking that she had made his rope snap.
It was quite a sight watching her get chased by Peeves. It was probably the only time I felt grateful that the poltergeist existed.
"Let's go before Professor McGonagall comes down," I suggested and leaving Umbridge to deal with Peeves, we went up the stairs to our common room.
The last thing we heard was Umbridge shrieking still, "get this thing away from me!"
Once we were in the common room and the chaos had died down, I let out a sigh of relief.
I don't know what Umbridge wanted to talk to me about when Peeves had interrupted but I was glad that distraction came up. Knowing Umbridge, whatever she wanted to talk about would definitely end up ruining my mood.
So I was glad that didn't happen. And Davies did help me out so a thank you was due.
"Hey, thanks," I spoke up, catching him by slight surprise, "you literally saved me from the worst I can face at Hogwarts."
He smiled, "you're welcome. I had to admit, it was fun though. I see now why your brothers pull so many pranks."
Now that was something I did not expect to hear from him but well there's a first time for everything.
Perhaps it was the fact that he had helped me out and in the past few days he had been constantly proving that he wasn't as bad as I initially thought, I decided to clear things up right then.
"You know, you're not as annoying as you were in fourth year," I spoke up, "I think if anything, you're much more tolerable now."
"Tolerable," he rose an eyebrow, a smile about to crease his face.
"I mean tolerable enough to consider you a friend," I elaborated, feeling like he deserved an explanation, "you've helped me out and you no longer irritate me with stupid valentines. I guess we can look past it and move on."
Hearing about the valentine he sent me in fourth year made him embarrassed, "well I'm sorry about that. It really was a stupid move and I'll never do that again."
I still remember that day he had sent me a valentine and the excuse I chose using to get out of the date was telling him that I was a werewolf and going out with me on a full moon night would be life-threatening for him.
I guess he recalled the same thing as he chuckled lightly, trying to overcome the embarrassment.
"Though you do know now that I am not a werewolf, right?" I asked, curious to know his answer, "I said it back then to terrify you."
"Of course. I don't hear any howls coming from your dorm on full moon nights," he remarked and the playful glint in his eyes made me laugh too.
"So friends?" I held my hand out towards him and he took it shortly after.
"Sure."
I had to admit, talking things out with him honestly was a good idea. I felt relieved about it and there wouldn't be a barrier of embarrassment between us from then onwards.
We spent most of the night in the common room, telling each other about our interests and basic things friends should know. He told me that he had met someone on his trip to America during that summer break who made him realize that his crush on me was nothing compared to what he felt for her.
That was actually a good thing. I wouldn't have to bother about him having feelings for me ever.
All in all, I did not regret that night.
By the time we were finally heading off to our dorms, he waved lightly, "good night, Katerina."
I smiled at that remark as I replied, "good night, Roger."
Hearing me address him by his first name made his smile widen. "See you at breakfast."
