The Bluefield Estate 1982

Addilyn stood awkwardly for a moment or two until the pair had recovered their wits. Offering her hand, the woman introduced herself.

"I'm Brea. I know you must have so many questions. Please, sit down." Nodding his head the man added,

"I'm Jacob. It's a pleasure to meet you." He pulled a comfy, auburn club chair out for her and gestured for her to sit.

"Where are we?" Addilyn asked nervously.

"Well, I should've assumed that would be your most immediate concern. I'm not really sure how to put this because it's going to sound insane." Brea scrunched her eyebrows together as she carefully contemplated how to put it. Jacob looked over at Addilyn and sighed before answering,

"We're in a house on the Bluefield estate located in South Carolina. The year is 1982." Addilyn's eyes widened as she attempted to absorb this new information.

"How is that possible? I was just in New York!" Jumping up, Addilyn ran over to the window and flung open the heavy curtains. Bright light flooded the room, washing everything in the sun's rays. She pressed her hand to the glass leaving a print, as she gazed with fascination at the sight below. The house overlooked sand dunes covered in thick marram grass. Just beyond that was the ocean. Addilyn realized that she had been hearing its gentle rising and falling in the background the entire time. Turning back to her companions, Addilyn said in a much calmer voice,

"Alright, tell me everything." Brea gave her a broad smile and proceeded with more confidence.

"You have a gift. The ability to walk through time. It is an extremely rare ability. The painting you saw was the border between now and then. When you stepped through it you crossed into the year 1982. This magic is unpredictable and unprecedented in most cases. The thing is, no one is born with this gift."

"What do you mean?" Addilyn looked at them, brimming with curiosity.

"It is something you acquire. In an important moment you get the gift. It happens in an instant. It is never for the same reason though. Everyone's reason for receiving it is different." Jacob explained.

"How do you have this ability?" Brea queried earnestly. Addilyn ducked her head and bit her lip,

"I don't know."

"Everyone knows when it happens. You just know." Brea's voice became suspicious. Addilyn merely shrugged. A deadly pause followed this. Jacob quickly broke the silence by saying,

"Well, I think that first we need to get you into some proper clothes and get some meat on those bones of yours." Nodding her head in agreement, Brea led Addilyn out of the room and into a bedroom down the hall.

"There are clothes in the closet for you to change into. The bathroom is over there so you can wash up too. I know this is a lot but I need to begin teaching you. There is so much for you to learn. Our first lesson will start tomorrow morning at 8 am sharp. Once you're done changing come on downstairs for dinner." Addilyn nodded and gave her a small smile. As the door closed she let out a shaky sigh. Brea's question had left her nerves on edge. An unsettling feeling swirled within her stomach. She knew when she had received this ability. It was the same day everything had changed. The moment that had left her homeless on the streets of New York City. A moment she would rather forget.
