Harbor Glory
"It's called Harbor Glory. It depicts a beautiful sunset on the New York Harbor. It was one of my mother's favorites." Blaise stared out the window wistfully.
"Why this painting in particular?" Addilyn asked softly.
"It will take us back to the year your family was killed."
"Please, Blaise. I don't know if I can face that again." Addilyn stared at the road ahead, her voice quivering slightly.
"I think it might be the only way. If we can find the person who killed them, we'll have a shot at fixing everything." His eyes were sympathetic but his mouth formed a hard line.
"How do you know? What if I can't even get us through the painting?"
"I don't know. But it's the only plan we've got." The gravelly road seemed to drag on forever. The sun was gradually slipping away, and soon it would be gone completely.
"We should rest for a while. Brea and my father won't be able to catch up with us with us in time anyway."
"Sounds like a good idea." Pulling onto the side of the road, Addilyn slowly moved the car behind a grove of trees where it couldn't be seen from the road. The trees created long shadows in the fading light.
"Here, I snagged us a few blankets before we left." Blaise handed her one of the two dark blue, fleece-like blankets. For a brief moment, their hands brushed, sending shivers up Addilyn's arm. Quickly averting her eyes, she focused on the blanket.
Laying the blanket on the ground, she tried to make herself comfortable. The day had been long and tiring so it was not long before they were both fast asleep.
The two teens slept, blissfully unaware of the storm rolling in from the west. A storm that was sure to shake the earth and electrify the sky.
