Mischief Managed!

Chapter 2-

The decorations were up. The food was out. The guests were here. Music was even playing in the background. The party was ready, but something was missing...where in Merlin's pants was the birthday girl?!?

Sky's friends looked at eachother in confusion. They turned to the adults for an explanation, who then turned to Sky's embarrassed parents for one. No one knew where she was. Well, except one person. Too bad he was missing too.

"Hey Giselle, have you seen Matt lately? I can't seem to find him anywhere..." Clara, Matt's mother, asked worriedly to her sister-in-law.

Giselle bit her lip. "Oh...I'm sure he'll turn up eventually. Sky disappears often." She assured her, despite being quite anxious herself. The last time those two went missing...she shuddered at the memory. Let's just say, they now have a life-long ban from the Fantastic Fireworks store.

Just when she was about to head upstairs to find her daughter and nephew, white smoke started pouring into the room. The young Potterheads beamed in delight and buzzed with excitement. The parents all turned to her, and Giselle smiled assuringly as if this was planned. But of course, it wasn't. When it came to Skyler Threat, you have to expect the unexpected.

A crack echoed through the room, and a small figure appeared from the fog. "Muggles, witches, and wizards, your birthday celebrant...has ARRIVED!" Sky announced.

Everyone started clapping while Sky bowed dramatically. Giselle fought the urge to roll her eyes as she exhaled a deep breath she didn't even know she was holding in. Clara nudged her with her elbow, and nodded to another figure in the back. This time, Giselle really did roll her eyes as she chuckled a bit. As the fog started fading away, the unmistakable figure of Matt Threat Junior was currently turning off the fog machine.

She was so relieved, Giselle didn't even ponder how they obtained a smoke machine...much. She sighed, and walked back to the other adults to talk about whatever parents gossip about. Giselle tried her best to push away all thoughts about Sky...no. She wouldn't think about it. Not now.

On the other side of the room, the group of Potterheads were currently fawning over Sky's grand entrance. Matt casually walked up to them, and fistbumped the birthday celebrant when no one was looking. She gave him a grateful smile, which he replied with an 'you owe me' laugh that implied he was only joking. Maybe. You can never be too sure with a prankster.

After things started to settle down, Sky announced that the first game would begin. When she turned around to prepare the games, Matt noticed a few wary and nervous faces among the HP fans. He smirked, immediately knowing why.

Unlike her parents, Sky saw everything as a challenge. She was one of the most competitive people on the planet, which made Easter egg hunts quite difficult. Of course, Matt just so happened to also be quite competitive, leading to the most intense prank wars ever seen. When they saw the first party game of the day, everyone knew they were doomed.

"HP Trivia! Okay people, I'll split everyone up into their respective houses." Sky stated. She then sorted the few people who were brave enough to participate into each house. Each house had two people in it, and the spectators (adults and other people who didn't want to participate) cheered on their respective house.

Matt glanced at his cousin with a confident smirk. "Get ready to lose Ravenclaw!"

Sky snorted. "Puh-lease! As if a Gryffindor like you could beat us!" She retorted sassily, fistbumping her teammate.

"I can't wait for it to start! It'll be the only time Skyler Threat will be speechless!" He snorted.

She rolled her eyes. "Save the talk for the answers, Matthew!" They both hated it when people called them by their first names instead of their more preferable nicknames, so obviously they'd call eachother that every once in a while.

For the sake of everyone's dignity, specifically a 12 year old boy by the name of Matthew Threat (junior), there will not be an in-depth description of how the trivia round went provided in this book. Let's just say that Ravenclaw won.

A few more of the games ended similarly, but were much more fun. Some of the crowd favourites included a real-life Quidditch match (kids versus parents), HP character impressions contest, and batting the giant pinata of Voldemort's face with a giant wooden bat that resembled Harry's wand (this game was a real hit!). The only activity that Matt actually beat Sky in was the Bertie Bott's challenge. He managed to scarf down a handful more disgustingly flavored jelly beans than her because she found spitting them at his precious hair much more entertaining.

Since he was so vain about his "flawless" hair, he shrieked in a high pitched voice, jumped up, and rushed into the bathroom. Being the kind cousin she was, Sky captured it all on her phone to use for/as future pranks. Or better: blackmail.

Even through all the fun, Sky couldn't help but notice that her parents were acting a bit...off. Sky was actually pretty bad at reading people's emotions, but the faraway looks on their faces just caught her attention. She bit her lip worriedly. What happened? Did something go wrong? Was it her fault?

As selfish as it sounds, she shrugged it off. Her parents were tough people, capable of holding on for a few more hours. She decided that she'd talk to them after the party, so people wouldn't start asking questions. But she may or may not have gotten distracted when the treacle tarts were served...

Anyway, after the Golden Snitch cake, costume contest, and loot bags, the guests started leaving to do boring muggle things with their unfortunate Potterhead children. The despaired looks on their faces were quite pitiful, to say the least.

Matt hung back for a few more hours, doing a bunch of stuff with Sky like discussing prank tactics and strategies, fangirling/boying, him bragging about his Orlando trip, her bragging about ComicCon, and both opening up Sky's awesome birthday gifts.

After tearing open another collector's edition Hermione Granger wand, Matt looked back up to Sky, who was sorting her new Ravenclaw merchandise by the total surface area from least to greatest, and the shade of blue used in order from lightest to darkest. "Hey, you never told me why you decided to celebrate your party on Longbottom's birthday." He stated casually, grabbing a leftover chocolate frog.

Sky looked up from her organizing, and stared at him. "Longbottom? Siriusly?"

He replied with a nonchalant shrug. "What? That's his name, isn't it?"

She continued to stare. "But 'Longbottom'? You couldn't have just said 'Neville', or 'the day before Harry's birthday'? But noooo, you had to ruin it by saying 'Longbottom'. Like, honestly!" She exclaimed incredulously, using a variety of hand movements to increase the dramatic emphasis. Matt found it quite amusing that her impression of Hermione was spot-on.

He snorted. "Oh Merlin, blame Rowling! She was the one who came up with that ridikullus name, not me! Just answer the question!" He replied exasperated, with an over-dramatic sigh.

Rolling her eyes, Sky decided to leave her argument for another day. "Well, I thought it was more important to sob uncontrollably in a corner to honour Fred's..." she sniffled. "...you know, instead of celebrating. And I thought it was appropriate to acknowledge Neville for all of his courage and kindness." She mimicked her cousin's casual shrug.

"Rubbish!" He exclaimed, pointing his half-eaten chocolate frog at her accusingly. "You just didn't want to have your party until I came back from Athens!" He smirked, taking yet another bite of the frog's head.

"What?!? No!" Sky yelled, feeling her cheeks heat up a teensy bit. She'd never admit it, but his statement did have some truth to it. As awesome as Sky was, they both knew that Matt added his own little something to the party madness. And she couldn't just have her birthday party without her favourite (and only) cousin!

Other than herself, Matt was the biggest Potterhead she's ever met. And she went to ComicCon. Twice! He was always traveling, and on April 1st, he just so happened to be in Greece, having a blast learning about mythology without her.

And due to school work and other muggle stuff, the date of her party kept being postponed (and Matt's vacation at Universal Studios didn't exactly help) until she decided it to be on July 30th. Her parents seemed hesitant at first, but Sky won the argument with her amazing debate skills, puppy dog eyes, and sheer stubbornness.

"Fine, whatever you say birthday girl." Matt replied easily, scarfing down the remains of the frog's chocolatey body in a single bite. And with that, the topic switched to school, to Hogwarts, to books, to pranks, to the latest episode of Doctor Who, and then back to Hogwarts

"Do you think I'll get my Hogwarts letter soon?" Sky asked hopefully, looking up at Matt. She was, quite frankly, getting a bit desperate. She had been 11 for months now. If she was a witch, it should have been delivered to her much earlier. Even though Harry didn't read his letter until his birthday, floods of them were constantly mailed to him much earlier before July 31st. It was either that she wasn't a witch, or that the HP universe wasn't, and never was, real. She couldn't decide which option was worse.

Matt frowned a bit, as if her question was something he should be concerned about. "Siriusly? Of course! You should feel lucky that you still have a chance. Mine got lost in all of the owl mail. I wouldn't be surprised if Errol died in the middle of delivering it."

She laughed a bit, making some of the tension go away. Pretty soon, Matt had to go. Just as they were leaving, Matt turned and ran back up to a surprised Sky. "I forgot to give you your present. Just a little something I picked up from Orlando. I thought you might like it." He pulled out a rectangular box wrapped in blue and silver, and handed it to her gingerly. Sky smiled gratefully, silently communicating a thank you to him.

"Well...happy birthday Sky. See you soon!" They gave eachother a final hug, before sadly pulling apart. He smiled and ran off, waving at them. "Bye Sky!"

"Bye Matt!"

And together they called, "Mischief managed!"

A shiver went down her back, and she shuddered a bit. Clutching the gift from him to her chest, she felt a throbbing pain in her heart, as if she was just recently stabbed. She didn't know why, but for some odd reason, she had a feeling that those goodbyes were going to be permanent.
