Falling
Chapter 3-
Never in her life had Sky ever felt so empty, so alone. She knew that she was being over-dramatic, but she just couldn't shake off that cold feeling of abandonment. Taking the birthday present from Matt and The Philosopher's Stone with her, she decided that she needed some fresh air to clear her mind.
Running downstairs, she found her parents hunched over a piece of paper, intensely scribbling on it like there was no tomorrow. They spoke to eachother in hushed whispers, but they were obviously very urgent due to their serious expressions. Sky hesitated. They looked pretty busy, and she didn't want to disturb them. But just as she was about to head back, her mom tilted her head to the side a bit, and saw her daughter at the corner of her eye.
Giselle's brown eyes widened, and she quickly pulled the paper off the table. Sky wondered what could be so important that it had to be hidden from her. And...why were her mother's eyes puffy?
"Er...mum? What's wrong?" Sky asked worriedly, looking between her parents' forced smiles.
"Nothing, dear. What would you like?" Her father asked kindly. Sky gave them a suspicious glance, but didn't press the matter further. She trusted her parents, and if they were hiding something from her, there had to be a good reason.
"Er...yeah. Can I go read outside?" Her parents had a rule to always make sure she told them when she was going outside. Despite all of her mischief, she was only eleven years old, and they wanted to keep her safe.
Her parents exchanged worried glances. Their eyes displayed panic, and they almost looked scared. After a few more seconds, Giselle nodded. "Sure, sweetheart. We love you, remember that."
Sky gave them a weird look. They were acting really strange, even by wizard-standards. With their watery eyes and sentimental comments, you would've thought that they were never going to see her again. "Oh...kay? Love you too! Uh, bye mum! Bye dad!" She said awkwardly, jumping back up the stairs to get her TARDIS blue wind breaker and phone.
On her way outside, The Philosopher's Stone in hand, she didn't notice the quiet sobs of her mother, and the grave expression of her dad. They continued to write, knowing that it will need to be ready very soon. A small brown parcel sat on the table, one that Sky didn't notice when she briefly spoke to her parents.
She ran to her favourite tree, an old willow, and plopped down underneath its hanging branches. Sky loved hiding in there because it felt like a wall separating the muggle life from her own fantasies. Scooting closer to the trunk and deeper in the shade, she leaned back into her comfortable reading position. With a happy sigh, she opened the book with care and started reading.
Wind tousled her ebony hair around her sun-tanned face, but she didn't even notice. Although this must've been the 17th time rereading it, The Philosopher's Stone (or The Sorcerer's Stone if you were American) never ceased to capture her attention. Once again, she became absorbed into the Harry Potter universe. The universe of witches and wizards, the universe with Hogwarts and Hogsmeade. The universe of magic. Her universe.
And as she inhaled the familiar scent of the blades of grass, and the willow tree's trunk, she started to notice the wind becoming fiercer. Her hair slapped her face, and the book fell out of her hands. With a yelp, she hastily stood up and grabbed her beloved book before the harsh breeze, if you would even call it a breeze, could put more distance between them. Sky looked up, expecting to see a storm, but it was as peaceful and clear as it was a few minutes before.
As the wind continued whipping her raven locks around, blocking her vision, a particularly strong gust knocked her backwards. She plopped back onto the grassy ground with a yelp, and her phone fell out of her pocket.
A whirlwind surrounded her, and she felt herself being lifted into the air. With a strangled cry, Sky shut her eyes tightly. Whether it was because she didn't want to see what frightening thing was happening, or to conceal her tears, no one knew. Maybe both.
She was just imagining this. Like the tingling sensation that travelled through her, almost like magic. She would wake up. She would wake up, and it'll all be just a dream. Any moment now.
The cyclone carried her upwards, yet Sky felt like she was
Falling,
And falling,
And falling.
When she was just about to let out a desperate scream of pure panic, she hit the ground. Her soft landing didn't hurt at all, but that didn't stop her from groaning as she finally opened her eyes. Blinking the blurriness out of her hazel orbs, Sky shakily stood up. Rays of sunlight instantly blinded her. Shielding her eyes with her hands, she looked around to try and identify her currently unknown surroundings.
Multiple questions invaded her mind as she stared at the grassy field around her. She reluctantly shoved them aside, knowing that they'd have to wait. At least just for now. She was a curious Ravenclaw, after all.
Taking a deep breath, she was just about to start walking toward a large shape towering many trees in the distance, when something dropped from the sky directly infront of her. Intrigued, she quickly stooped down to pick it up.
It was a present. Matt's present. To her. Blinking back tears, she knew this was wrong. She wasn't supposed to be here, wherever 'here' was. She was supposed to be at home with her family. But if this was so wrong...why did it feel so right?
Biting her lip, Sky tenderly peeled off the wrapping paper with care. Underneath the gift wrap was a beautiful black leather notebook that was pretty similar to her old journal. Her hazel eyes widened as she examined the beautiful Hogwarts crest emblazoned on the cover with silver. Her first name was also embossed on the cover, underneath the crest, in the same shiny shade of silver. She fondly stroked the calligraphy-like font her name was written in. Turning it over, she found that a card was taped to its back. Opening the envelope, the ends of her lips twitched at the sight of Hedwig. She opened the card.
Dear Sky,
Happy eleventh birthday! Anyway, I saw this in Universal, and I thought you might like it. I really hope you do! I was going to get you one of those Extendable Ears, but blimey! They were NOT cheap! This notebook wasn't either, but I thought your parents would appreciate a journal more than another device you could use to eavesdrop on their private conversations.
I don't really know what else to say... If you happen to get your Hogwarts letter, PLEASE get me a chocolate frog! No muggle knockoffs, I mean the real deal! Unless you're busy shopping in Diagon Alley, I'll see you next weekend!
It's my uncle David's birthday or something (he has like 13 other brothers, so I always lose track), and they're throwing a family party at my place (Mum's gone frantic trying to rid the house of my hidden pranks). If you don't come, I know I'll die of boredom.
This letter is sooo long! Well, for me, at least. I'll end off here because I'll be seeing you in a few days anyway! I'll catch you up then! Bye for now Sky! Mischief Managed!
-Matt ⚡
Despite being completely confused about everything, Sky couldn't help but smile down at Matt's handwriting and signature lightning bolt (similar to her own). She could almost hear Matt himself saying that to her. Sky opened the journal to examine the pages, and was met with another letter. The handwriting was familiar in a way that seemed unfamiliar. She carefully opened up the envelope so it wouldn't rip, and began to read.
Dear Skyler Threat,
Greetings! Our time is a bit limited, but your letter to me was so heartwarming, I just had to respond. Over the years, I always marveled at the fact that so many Harry Potter fans actually take their time to write me such beautiful letters. Delight and joy are only a few expressions I feel when reading them. Like yours, I have to note. Until next time, I just wanted to express my gratitude for your kind words, and to also give you a small piece of advice. Careful where you go, and what you do, and when. Knowledge is power, but you have to use it well.
Sincerely,
Joanne Rowling (J.K. Rowling)
Sky was absolutely speechless, to say the least. Last month, she wrote the Queen of Literature a letter from her heart. She didn't expect her majesty to actually respond back, handwritten no less! Although her few sentences were a little confusing, she didn't even care because the J.K Rowling wrote back!!!
Giddy with glee, she started making her way to the looming structure. After two steps, a small piece of paper fluttered from the sky, and she quickly caught it. 'Watch out.'
Furrowing her eyebrows, she tried to make sense of it. 'Watch out for what?' She thought. A noise like something was wheezing came from above. Sky looked up.
A small shape came hurtling directly to her rapidly. Her eyes widened, and she jumped out of the way a second too late. She didn't know what it was, but it exploded, knocking her to the ground on her back.
Red sparks burst from it pointing to the sky, and the noise was loud enough to be heard a mile away. Other than a sore back, scraped knee, and stinging elbow, she was generally not injured.
She didn't even have a chance to stand up when a brown box dropped from above, and harshly collided with her head. It was hard and heavy enough to knock her out. Spots danced around her vision, and the edges blurred.
Before she slipped out of consciousness, she vaguely saw a figure of a woman hurriedly rushing over to her yelling, "Arthur! Come quick!"
Then all. Went. Black.
Author's Note-
This chapter is dedicated to LadybirdCookie, who made the beautiful cover in the media section! If you'd like to have your work featured in this book, just make a cover (or any form of 'fan art') for TTP, and notify me when finished! I will be keeping this cover, but I will be more than happy to display your covers here! Some of you may have noticed that I unpublished and republished all of my previous chapters, and that's because I am now adding one of my favourite quotes in each chapter, FOR each chapter! I'm using the Wattpad quotation ability to do this, and my own backgrounds.
Question-
How many of you thought that I'M Sky? Be honest, I won't judge you. I know a lot of you have been wondering because of my username and my writing style, but I am sadly not like her at all. Personality-wise, yes, but her age and appearance is nothing like me. Just wanted to clear that up in case anyone was going to report me for being underage or something (not that any of would, but just in case...). And if you do happen to come across a girl that looks exactly like Sky, don't yell, "HI TRIP!!!" because I can assure you that it's not me, and you'll probably receive plenty of stares.
