Scene: 7

The Kingdom of Elphindia

Dean: Wow, this place has changed so much since I was last here......

Elf Guards: Halt trespasser!!!!!!!!!!

Dean: Wait! What? No! I'm only here to--- Hey! Stop! Evelyn---------!

(at the castle dungeon)

Dean: Great! You try to do something nice for the one person you love and you end up in her parents' kingdoms' dungeon! (clapping his hands) Congrats, Dean! You've really done it this time!

(Elf General, and other notable guards walk in)

Elf General: Get up trespasser, it's time for your trial with the royal family.

Dean: (he says sarcastically and rolling his eyes) Fun!

(The scene shifts to inside the Royal Court Room)

Kythaela: Enter!

(They enter in and Dean is surprised and angry to see the Pryder and Evelyn close together and snuggling)

Evelyn: The shop worker! What are you doing here? And in chains...

Dean: I was caught "trespassing," but I was only trying to bring you back this.

All: (gasping) He stole it!

Dean: No wait I can...

Evelyn: But he seems so nice!

Pryder: Don't be fooled, my love. He stole the most important piece of our kingdom!

Evelyn: But maybe-

Pryder: Execute him!

(The Elf Guards charge Dean and begin to drag him away)

Dean: Wait! This is just one big misunderstanding! I can explain! Evelyn!

Elf General: Don't worry, my queen. No such treason will come to this kingdom ever again.

Evelyn: Mom, I don't really think-

Kythaela: Hush darling. Everything will be alright, I know you must be so upset that a once good friend betrayed you again.

Evelyn: Once good friend?

Kythaela: You don't recognize him?

Evelyn: Wait you don't mean-

Kythaela: Dean. Even after all these he still looks handsome, but that doesn't excuse his betrayal and treason.

Evelyn: I can't believe I let this happen. Dean!

Kythaela: You don't think you're going back with him, do you?

Evelyn: I... uh... (to guards) Hold it! Stop everything!

(The guards stop)

Elf General: What is it, princess?

Evelyn: He doesn't deserve to die. I lost that pendant in the woods when I buried Redmond and when I realized it and went back to retrieve it, I couldn't find it anywhere.

Dean: I followed you into the forest to try and stop you, but instead of finding you, I found the pendant and kept it. I forgot all about it until Sedgewick found it today.

Evelyn: Dean. I don't see how I didn't recognize you... (takes deep breath and squares her shoulders) Release him!

Elf General: I'm sorry, princess, but now only the queen can repeal this.

Evelyn: (turns around) Mom, please! He's innocent! Don't you understand?

Kythaela: Absolutely...not!

(All gasp)

Pryder: Finally!

Evelyn: You're agreeing with this!?

Pryder: I don't want you to leave me for this.... This.... loser!

Evelyn: I-I-I guess...

Kythaela: Good. Get rid of this rif-raf so we can get on with our lives.

(Elf guards exit with dean and the general hands Evelyn her pendant before exiting)

Evelyn: (hiding her tears) Can I just... say goodbye?

Kythaela: (angrily and hesitantly nods) Fine.

(Evelyn rushes offstage and scene shifts to near the forest)

Evelyn: Guards! My mother gave me permission to speak to him. You are excused.

(The pause, bow, then exit)

Dean: Hey.

Evelyn: Hey... I'm sorry for all of this.

Dean: I'm sorry for what happened.

Evelyn: What?... Oh, well... that was years ago.

Dean: Yes, but it was wrong of me to act like that when that just happened to you. I understand why they think I'm a loser.

Evelyn: It's not like that. My mother just wants me to marry a strong prince...

Dean: Do you love him?

Evelyn: Of course, we're getting married.

Dean: That wasn't my question. I asked if you loved him, not if you were getting married.

Evelyn: Look... they forbid you from ever returning and I just wanted to have a proper goodbye. So... maybe it was a mistake.

(Evelyn turns to leave, but Dean starts singing)

Figure It Out

Dean:
Do I love you? Maybe we can work it out, we just need some glue. But not if it's only based on doubt. But do you love him?___ Or is that smile of yours only fake? Hey, I'm only going out on a limb, but I'm doing it for your sake___ But is this how you feel?____ I'm trying to figure it out! How do I deal__ with saying goodbye___

Evelyn: (speaking than singing)
Dean... We've both moved on____ Just face the facts. I've accepted that he's gone. And nothing I see now attracts. Everything's lost its worth, so why does it matter?___ I don't know if I could ever truly love___ again___ or else my heart will shatter. Can I ever be myself again?___ I don't know, I'm trying to figure it out. But here, I just feel locked to a chain___ And all I ever know anymore is doubt.

Dean:

But maybe we can figure it out___ together___ Like birds of a feather___ I truly love you__ And I'll be the man you want me to__ But only if you can take me as I am. I hope you understand, that this is not a part of the plan. But, what is____ You don't always have to do what everyone says. But what we have is special. Only to us___ What we have is each other. So what's all of the fuss___ No one else needs to understand, but we can do it together, hand in hand___ Proclaim our love for all the world to see___ You and me___

Evelyn: (speaking than singing)
Okay, but... but... Here I am, well... here we are. What do we have, if I go, Valliea only for you and my kingdom for me. And no one would understand where will we go off to hand in hand. I don't know if I can even do this, am I asking clearly?___ I hate to be so blunt, but only to be upfront. Is this a bad thing? I'm still trying to figure it out___

Dean:
I can change, and never be the same.

Evelyn:

No wait-it's not in your name, I mean, don't change. It's just, ugh I-feel insane___ Different, oh to be free to be different and to know my purpose___

Dean:
And though it's strange, is it... are you... out of range?___ I'll figure it out. Because you're worth it. I'll keep calling out for you___ No, I'll never quit! Call out for you____ As much as I seem fit. And I'll___ figure___ it____ all out___

Together:

And I see now, love is never easy___ And I see now___ we'll work together to figure it out. Our love is worth the pain. They can call us insane, but the world sees us in vain___ Maybe if we can figure it out___ together___ then we can have the life we've always wanted___ We'll never again be parted___ Life will play out, and we can figure___ it out____ together___________

Dean: Evelyn, if it's what you want... I'd love for us to be together. What do you say?

Evelyn: (holding back tears) Yes, Dean... It's what I've always wanted.

Dean: What about your mother?

Evelyn: I've grown up, she needs to let me make my own choices, and I'm ready to start my life... with you.

Dean: In that case... (gets down on one knee) Will you marry me?

Evelyn: (happily and shocked) Of course, Dean!

(Dean slides the ring onto her finger and gets up and strokes her cheek. The two lean in and embrace each other with a kiss. The music cues and the stage goes dark and changes into the day of their wedding.)
