The Edge of the Forest

Evelyn: Bread, berries, water, map... Am I missing anything? (the wind picks up making scary noises, she looks around) It's just the wind. It's just the wind. The real danger is... In the woods. I do hope I don't bump into Bestanden. (she cautiously enters the forest)

Through The Forest

Evelyn:
I don't know where to start. Darkened mysteries all around. I need to just follow my heart, and leave that prison ground of a town. All the beauty of life is made up of shadow and light. I've got to find him, I just might! No time to look back, I've got to look forward and stay on the path. And through the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul. I'll take a walk in these woods and come out taller than the trees. In the forest I can be free and follow my destiny___

(lights turn off and the scene is slightly shifted to in the forest)

Evelyn: Just keep going. Just keep going.... Dean!? Dean where are you!? De- AHH!

Redmond: (popping out from behind a tree) Hello there, girl.

Evelyn: (clutching her heart) You... You frightened me.

Redmond: But how could I do that? I am no beast nor foe. Does my face frighten you up close? Is it perhaps my height or state? Or might it be-

Evelyn: No, it's not. Sorry, I guess it's not normal to get scared over someone jumping out at you. My bad.

(Evelyn continues walking, Redmond follows)

Redmond: What's your name?

Evelyn: Forgive me, but my mother and father have always told me to never talk to strangers.

Redmond: But I'm not strange.

Evelyn: Yeah.... okay?

Redmond: I'm Redmond.

Evelyn: (looks at him) My name is Evelyn.

Redmond: (stepping in front of her outstretching his hand) Well then, it is nice to meet you, Evelyn.

Evelyn: You too. (continues on)

Redmond: (following) So what brings you into the forest? Is it not forbidden in your town?

Evelyn: (stops) Wait, how did you know that?

Redmond: I used to be apart of your town. We went to school together-

Evelyn: Huh? Aren't you like a thousand years old?

Redmond: It's the forest that make me look that way. The darkness. But no, I'm not much older than you. And I've learned all of the ways of the forest.

(distant sound, the lights flicker off then on)

Evelyn: (looking around) What was that? (looks back at Redmond, only to see he's vanished) What a funny boy. Or was he really? These trees are playing tricks on me. I need to find Dean and get out of here! But do I dare go back to the town I dread? And leave Dean?................NO! I will continue on!

Evelyn: (Talking then singing)                                              (spoken):
All these trees just look the same. I just hope I can find him. Dean, where are you? When we would play as children__ I would have it all. When you pushed me on the swing, I felt like I could fly__ Your hair always covers your left eye. Maybe that's why you rarely see me when I pass by. But I've never met anyone like you__ and now that I'm without you I feel so empty inside. The sky doesn't seem as blue, just black. But... do you like me back? I would give it all-I would sacrifice____

Evelyn: (speaking)                                                                      Evelyn: (singing)
Haven't I passed this log before? Oh, Dean what are you doing? Am I just dreaming? And when you find me here you'll search no more? I like everything about you, and I can't believe I didn't see it all before. It's an amazing new point of view___

Evelyn: (speaking)
But, Dean... I'm so lost without you. Where are you!?

(looking at map)

Evelyn: Then I go North, no!? South!?

Haiyang: Actually, you go West.

Evelyn: Ah! You scared me! (to audience) Why does this keep happening?

Haiyang: You aren't from around here, are you?

Evelyn: Is it that obvious?

Haiyang: Well, people around here don't usually read maps out loud.

Evelyn: Oh, I suppose you're right.

Haiyang: I'm surprised you made it this far into the forest. You don't look like the adventurous type.

Evelyn: It hasn't been easy... I'm looking for someone.

Mya: (enters) Oh......(pauses) What's going on? Who are....

Oceane: (same action, approaches Evelyn) HELLO!!!

Evelyn: Umm... Hi, who are you guys?

Oceane: (Happily) Hi! I'm Oceane!

Mya: (bored) Name's Mya.

Haiyang: And I'm Haiyang.

Evelyn: Hi, my name is Evelyn... What are you?

Mya: We're mermaids.

Evelyn: Mermaids!?

Oceane: Yeah!

Evelyn: Then how are you on the land and... how do you have legs?

Haiyang: When we come up to the surface, our tails magically transform into legs, but when we touch the water we turn back into our mermaid form.

Mya: Though Haiyang isn't much of a mermaid anymore.

Haiyang: Mya!

Evelyn: What does she mean? What happened?

Haiyang: (sighs) My tail was taken away by Bestanden, the beast of the forest.

Evelyn: Why would he do that?

Haiyang: I'd rather not talk about it.

Evelyn: Well, all right then.

Haiyang: So, why are you here exactly?

Evelyn: It's... kind of a long story.

Oceane: We've got time! (smiles)

Mya: (grunts) I probably have something better to do, but (sighs) I guess I'll stay.

Evelyn: Okay...here it goes (takes a deep breath) Dean..... vamoose....... Sean..... forest.........troll......teacher..........monster...........song..........hallucinations..........food.........parents......cookies........school........missing kids.......never to be seen again... And (hyperventilates) now I'm here.

Haiyang: Wow!!!

Mya: Borrrrrriiiiiinnnnnnggggg! I mean (super perky) WOW!!!... Nope! Still boring! Psha! That was so fake!!! I'm out of here!

Oceane: You seem like you've been through a lot, I mean wow! That was so brave and kind and amazing and-

Mya: We get it perky tail!

Oceane: Okay... Well, we should probably tell you our story!

Haiyang & Mya: (at same time) Nnnnnnnnnoooooooo!!!!!!

Oceane: Awwwwwe.

Evelyn: Well, I was wondering! Could we go through the super dangerous forest together?

Mermaids: (look at each other then at Evelyn) Sorry sister! But were out!

Evelyn: Ugh fine!!!! I guess I'm on my own now.
