*Owen's POV*

Throughout our entire car ride, Claire kept trying to get in contact with her nephews. I could actually see her getting more and more upset with every unanswered call. I wouldn't necessarily say it was an awkward car ride...I think it sat more along the lines of how our car ride earlier was. We both had a lot of things on our mind that neither of us wanted to talk about, but we probably needed to. I kept my eyes on the road whenever they weren't drifting off to catch a glimpse at Claire. I won't lie, I was a little upset that our first date didn't go as well as we wanted it to. I mean, she's pretty attractive. It's not just that either. I like her work ethic, she stands her ground and goes out and gets what she wants. It's pretty admirable honestly. I guess I was just so thrown off by the fact that she was so uptight on our date...I mean, who turns down tequila? But I guess I should've respected her decision, not criticize it. Though, I don't think I can forget about her dissing my board shorts anytime soon. She was the one who asked me on the date, I thought she'd at least admire my ability to be able to relax. But I guess I should've realized sooner that she doesn't really relax much...if at all. "So, tell me about your nephews," I said, clearing the silence.

"I don't really know much about them, I haven't seen them in so long..." she looked down at her cell phone and sighed. "I've just been putting myself into my work, I've completely disregarded them."

"Well maybe let's start with their names, what are they?"

"Zach and Gray. Zach is the older one, Gray is younger. I think they're about 5 years apart," She bit the inside of her lip and then looked at me. "My sister said something about Zach applying to colleges next fall, he's been looking at a few now."

I nodded my head and looked at her. "Okay, so he's got to be what? 16 almost 17? That's the same age as Hailey. Do you know what college's he's been looking at?"

She shook her head and looked back down at her phone. "I haven't given much time to my family. I've dedicated what seems to be my entire life to my work...and now I could lose both of them." She tapped her phone against her hand and looked out of the window.

I could tell that she was upset and that she was holding back tears, I knew I needed to say something. "This one time-"

"My sister says that they love me and that they love spending time with me, especially Gray. She said that coming here to visit his Aunt Claire was all he could talk about from the moment they told them two months ago. I could even see how excited he was to be here, and do you know what the last thing that I told the both of them was?" She looked at me, her eyes still brimming with tears. "I canceled our afternoon plans and said I would see them at dinner. But I knew that I wouldn't see them."

"Claire..." I said, looking at her. I reached for her hand and her phone rang, causing her to quickly answer it.

"Hello? Zach?!" She said, leaning forward in her seat. "Oh, hi Lowery. No, no I just- do you have any more information?"

I looked straight ahead as we kept driving, we were headed towards the Valley which is the last place that we knew where her nephews were. We were coming up on it soon, I just hoped that they were still there and okay. Even if they weren't there...I was hoping they were okay. "Any word?" I asked, looking at her.

She hung up the phone and sighed, shaking her head. "He said that the signal hasn't changed, they're still somewhere around the valley."

"Well hopefully they were able to take some shelter somewhere and that they're okay," I said, giving her a small smile.

"So, tell me about your niece." She said, looking at me. "Do you get to see her much?"

"Hailey? Not as much as I like to or as she likes to...but I've been able to visit her a couple of times," I said, taking a deep breath and exhaling as I tightened my grip on the steering wheel. "She's visited me since I've started working here. She and her parents would come up and I'd show them around."

"Does she like it?" She asked, causing me to look at her with raised eyebrows. "I'm not asking for customer satisfaction purposes if that's what you're thinking. I mean, she obviously must like visiting since she came here as many times as you said she did."

"I think she did, especially when she was younger," I smiled to myself, thinking back on a memory of a 14-year-old, almost 15-year-old Hailey coming to visit when we had just gotten the raptors, "she's kind of a nerd, but don't tell her I told you. When we first got the raptors, they must have been only a few months old at the time of her visit. But I brought her with me just to show them to her and she was just so fascinated by them. Especially Blue, the beta. She would just sit there at the edge of their cage and Blue would sit beside it and she would just pet her and doodle."

"It sounds like you really love your niece," Claire said, smiling at me.

"She reminds me a lot of her mother. She's just this firecracker who won't take no for an answer. Her dad is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps, so I think having his deployments while she was growing up taught her a lot of things. But for the most part, she's so much like her mother...sometimes it just amazes me."

"She's gotten some stuff from you too," She said, looking at me. "when she came up to my car and the way she talked, I felt as if it was a little Owen standing outside of my door."

I let out a loud laugh and shook my head. I remember when Hailey was younger, back when I was still in the Navy she would always try to copy whatever her dad and I did. She'd constantly switch the topic of her projects from me to him. I remember one time, at one of her recitals back when she did dance, Mike told me that she did a presentation on who her hero was...and she did it on me. However, he did make it a point to note that she said her daddy would always be her number one, but her Uncle Owen was her hero too. I even still have the drawing she sent me one time when I was deployed overseas. It was cute for a 6th grader, right when she was starting to get into drawing. I always keep that memory to look back on whenever I'm feeling down, but lately, it hasn't been working. They all needed me when Elizabeth got sick, especially Hailey...and I wouldn't come home until it was almost too late. Yeah, some hero I am. "That's a nice compliment, but I hope Hailey doesn't turn out like me."

"What? You don't want her showing up in board shorts to a first date?" She said, giving me a small smile.

I threw my head back and laughed. She definitely knew to change the subject. "I stand by my defense, that it's Central America and it's too hot for khakis...even khaki shorts."

"Well khaki shorts would've been nice...." she sighed, shaking her head. "but I guess you're just a...how did Hailey put it earlier? Oh yeah, a pretty simple guy."

"Hey, I was simple enough for you to ask out on a date, wasn't I?" I said, smirking at her.

Her jaw dropped and she looked as if she was trying to say something but she just crossed her arms and leaned back into her seat. "So, why did you say that? Why did you say you hope Hailey doesn't turn out like you?"

I swallowed the lump in my throat as we pulled up to the Valley. I didn't want to say that the reason was that I didn't want Hailey to feel like she had to hide her feelings, that she couldn't express herself. I didn't want her to have to bury them deep down and try to avoid them like I've been doing. I've been a coward and that's something I never want her to be. I open my mouth to reply when my eye catches a large figure lying on the ground. "Stay in the car," I said, putting the car and park, grabbing my gun from the backseat and getting out. The closer that I got to the figure, I began to realize what it was. It was an Apatosaurus...and she was dying. I slowly walked over to her and squatted down by her head, placing my hands on her head and neck. "Hi," I whispered. "hi."

I could hear Claire opening the car door and shutting it, no doubt walking over. The dinosaur groaned in pain and I leaned closer to her, keeping my hands on her. "I know, I know." Suddenly, Claire appeared in front of me, looking down at the dinosaur in shock. I rubbed the back of the dinosaur's neck as she groaned again. "It's alright, all right girl."

Claire kneeled onto the ground and placed her hand right by mine on the dinosaur's neck. Her hand barely touched mine, but I still looked at her in shock. Her entire focus was on this dying dinosaur and she looked absolutely heartbroken. The dinosaur looked at Claire and lifted up her head, earning a gasp from her. She groaned again and I could see that her energy was fading and her head started to fall back down. I used my hands to help guide her safely to the ground and she groaned again, this time a little softer. Claire looked at me, tears still in her eyes as I pet the dinosaur and shushed at her. She placed her hand back onto the animal's jaw as she took her final breath. A flashback of being at my sister's bedside played in front of me and I fell back onto my legs, looking away from Claire as she looked at me. I stood up, taking my gun from around my shoulder and walked out towards the top of the hill we were currently on. My heart dropped when I was able to realize the scene in front of me. Claire came up behind me and when she saw it, all of the breath left her body. "It didn't eat 'em..." I said, staring out at the dead herd of other Apatosauruses. "It's killing for sport."

"How...how could that-" Claire shook her head as she couldn't find the words to say.

I could hear an engine rumbling in the distance and it was coming from the direction of the woods, just a little bit down the way at the forest at the bottom of the hill. I looked in the direction and saw my motorcycle coming towards us with Hailey on it. She raced up the hill and came to a stop by the car, turning it off and getting off. "Uncle Owen!" She yelled, running towards me and wrapping her arms around me.

I hugged her back and cradled the back of her head with my hand. I felt a wave of relief wash over me knowing that she was okay and out of harms way from that dinosaur. I looked at Claire who was still looking at the dinosaur and it clicked in my head just how much harm could have come to Hailey. She was wondering out in the open, even after I texted her. She could have been killed by this monster. I could have lost her too. I pulled away from our hug and held her by her shoulders, looking at her. "What are you doing here?"

She looked a bit hesitant to tell me her answer as she took a deep breath and exhaled. "After you guys left...I kind of stole your motorcycle and rode out to the valley to draw some of the dinosaurs."

My eyes grew wide and I scoffed in disbelief. "Are you kidding me, Hailey? Do you realize what could have happened?!"

"I didn't get your text until I was already here Uncle Owen, I swear! And then when I did, I-I tried to go back to the bungalow but then I-" She was starting to get a little panicky, I could tell, but I was still furious.

"You could have gotten yourself killed Hailey! Do you understand that?!" I yelled, furrowing my eyebrows.

"But I saw Zach and Gray in their gyrosphere and then that-that dinosaur went after one of the ankylosaurus's that was there and I-"

Before she could answer I pointed at Hailey, I could feel the anger radiating off of me. "No Hailey! You disobeyed me and you could have gotten yourself killed. You need to stop thinking of yourself and think of how others could be affected by your childish actions. I told you to stay in the bungalow, but you chose to wander off like a child." The words were coming off of my tongue like venom.

Her nostrils flared as she tried to keep herself standing tall. "I couldn't just leave them! This thing, it-it tried to kill them and I couldn't just leave them behind, I had to help Uncle Owen!"

"ENOUGH!" I yelled, causing both her and Claire to look at me in shock. "Get in the jeep, I'm taking you to the park and you're getting on the next ferry home-" I reached out to grab her arm and she snatched it away before I could even touch her.

"Owen, stop," Claire says, looking at me before looking back at Hailey

The way that she says those two words seemed to make me snap out of my anger, there was just a certain warning in her voice. I look away from her and over at Hailey who had tears building in her eyes. My face fell when I realized what I had done. I didn't mean to make it sound like I was sending her away- I just wanted her to be safe. "Hailey I'm-" I stepped towards her to give her some type of reassurance that I wasn't totally mad at her, but before I could, she was running back towards the motorcycle. "Hailey!"

"Hailey wait!" Claire called out, walking towards the motorcycle as Hailey started it. "Are they okay? Are my nephews okay? Zach and Grey!" Her voice was drowned out by Hailey revving the engine and speeding off into the woods.

"HAILEY!" I yelled, running by Claire...but it was no use. "Damn it"

"What the hell is your problem?" Claire asked, causing me to turn to look at her. "Why the hell would you yell at her like that? And threaten to send her home? Really?"

"It's nothing Claire," I said, walking back towards her and past her, not giving her a second look as I went to pick up my gun from where I dropped it when Hailey hugged me.

"Oh no, you're not doing that! You're not going to turn away from this situation!" She said, her voice still raised. She was really heated, I could tell. Only because she was starting to use her hands while she talked. "I thought you were a really decent guy Owen, I really did. I thought that maybe you weren't totally closed off and you were capable of caring for someone. But after that first date, that whole idea dropped...until I saw you with Hailey."

"Drop it, Claire," I mumbled, keeping my back to her as she walked over to me. I could feel my emotions start to bubble over, I knew I was about to explode any moment, but I'm trying so hard not to let them get the best of me.

"You wouldn't even listen to her! She was trying to tell you something and you wouldn't even give her the time of day! Why did you yell at her like that? How could you-"

I quickly turned to face her. "Because my sister died last month!" I yelled, looking at her. She had a shocked expression on her face, so safe to say that I caught her off guard. I pointed at my chest and shook my head. "And I should have been there for her, for the both of them. But I chose not to leave my work. And that girl-" I looked off into the woods and could feel myself begin to get choked up, but I kept my facade strong. "she had to sit by her dying mothers' side until the very last moment."

"Oh...Owen." Claire sighed, looking at me with a sort of empathy in her eyes.

"I feel so guilty like I shouldn't be allowed to grieve because I wasn't there." I took a deep breath and sniffled a bit, before exhaling. "And when I look at Hailey- I see Elizabeth. I think this is my second chance- I can be here for her. So to think that I almost lost her...I- It reminded me of losing Elizabeth all over again and how I failed her."

The two of us stood there for a few moments, neither saying a single world. I was still practically drowning in my thoughts, while I think Claire was more trying to take in what just happened. Honestly, I'm not a super emotional person. I don't show what I'm feeling, and Claire knew that. But just moments ago, she saw me at what could be considered a low for me. She saw me vulnerable and emotional. I took a deep breath and exhaled, walking past her and towards the car, getting in. We needed to go into the forest, but if we were to encounter something, I highly doubt the both of us would be able to get away from it on foot...especially with her type of shoes. Her nephews gyrosphere were not in the valley, it had to have been through those restricted gates. I could hear her following along behind me, I'm a bit surprised that she hasn't tried to say anything yet. I started the car and pulled around to enter the woods. While driving through, I made sure that I was on top alert. This thing had the ability to camouflage, we knew that now. It could be with us at this very moment and we could have no clue. This part of the area was huge, no doubt. It would have been easy for the two boys to get lost in, so I don't know how long it could take us to find their gyrosphere. "What's that?" Claire asked, pointing at the shadowed figure that was a little bit ahead of us, partially blocked by some trees.

As we kept driving towards it, a crushed gyrosphere came into view. My stomach dropped when I realized that this had to be the gyrosphere that her nephews were in. I stopped the car and got out, keeping my gun in my hand and walking towards the broken glass as Claire followed immediately behind me. "Hey there, I'm Jimmy Fallon. Welcome aboard the gyrosphere, an amazing machine made possible by science!" The voice recording started to scratch out as we neared it, most likely due to the damage the gyrosphere endured. "Hey, there. Your safety is our concern. Now just relax and enjoy the ride."

I noticed a tooth sticking out of the glass and I grabbed my hunting knife from my back pocket and pried it between the glass and the tooth, pulling it out. This thing was huge, no doubt it belonged to the Indominus.. Claire ran by me and came to a stop in front of the gyrosphere, her eyes wide. "No, no, no," she bent down and picked up a shattered phone and looked up at me in fear. "this is it- this is their gyrosphere!"

I remembered Hailey had said something about how she had to help Zach and Gray, that she couldn't leave them behind. I looked around us and saw footprints sunken into the mud and pointed at them. "Hey, they made it out."

She let out a huge sigh of relief and stood up. I began to follow their footprints down the muddy path in the forest. There were tons of them, at least three different pairs. One of them had to be Hailey's. The thought of her having to run for her life from that monster ate at me. The last thing that I promised my sister was that I would take great care of her for the rest of my life. Maybe I shouldn't have just left Hailey there at the bungalow...maybe she shouldn't have come here in the first place. The footprints led us into an opening in the forest where you could hear running water. Claire started to run a bit ahead of me, I could tell she was anxious. We came to a stop at a cliff, where there was a waterfall. I looked around to see if there was any sight of the two boys, but there was none. "Oh my God, they jumped." She said, sounding as if she was about to faint.

"Brave kids," I said, picturing the two boys and Hailey jumping off of this in order to survive from being attacked by the indominus.

"ZACH! GRAY!" Claire yelled, her voice echoing throughout the valley. I stepped towards her and started to shush her, which only made her angry. "Hey! I am not one of your damn animals."

"Listen," I said in a more calm demeanor. I needed her to take down the sass level. "those kids are still alive, but you and I will not be if you continue to scream like that."

She looked around and sighed. "So you can pick up their scent, can't you? Track their footprints?"

I furrowed my eyebrows and looked at her. "I was with the Navy, not the Navajo."

"So what do we do? What do you suggest we do?"

"You get back, I'll find them."

"Oh no," she said, waving her hand in between us. "we'll find them."

"You'll last two minutes in there," My eyes wandered down her outfit and when they landed on her shoes, I held back a small laugh. "less in those ridiculous shoes." She took a small step back and straightened up her posture. Yikes, I guess I hit something there. She undid the belt around her waist and ripped opened her blouse, revealing a purple tank-top. She tied her blouse into a knot and pulled up her sleeves, never taking her eyes off of mine as she placed her hands on her hips and held her head high. "What is that supposed to mean?"

She looked taken back at my question and squinted her eyes slightly. "It means I'm ready to go."

I stared at her, scanning her face for any sign of a joke..but she was a hundred percent serious. "Okay, but let's get one thing straight. I'm in charge out here, you do everything I say, exactly as I say it."

"Excuse me?" She asked, raising an eyebrow at me.

"Just relax, it's like taking a stroll through the woods," I took my gun off of my shoulder and smiled at her. "65 million years ago." I stood there, pointing my arm back in the direction of where we came from. She sighed and started to walk in the direction ahead of me. I watched her walk away and when she was far enough, I looked down next to me to see the large footprint that the Indominus had left behind. This day was nowhere near over. I just hope that the boys and Hailey aren't all alone out there...and that we can find them in time.
