*Hailey's P.O.V.*
I ducked beneath some bushes, my legs buckling underneath my weight and letting me fall to the ground. My chest was rising and falling at an incredible rate and my heart was beating hard. The forest was silent. There were no birds chirping, there were no crickets singing...and there were no more thundering footsteps that belonged to the loose dinosaur. At least not for now. The only sound that I could hear was my heart beating against my chest and the blood pounding in my ears. I don't know how long I'd been running, it honestly felt like forever. Sometime after I raced back into the forest after my run-in with Uncle Owen, I overcorrected on a turn trying to avoid a low branch and crashed his motorcycle into a neighboring tree. I think I'm okay, I just have a cut on my head. I could've sworn that I had heard the threatening footsteps the moment after I crashed the bike, so I didn't even take time to assess the damage. I just grabbed my backpack from the compartment, threw it on and started running. I don't know how long I had been running for, but this forest was a lot bigger than I gave it credit for. I must have done at least three laps around the entire thing, or I just had no idea where the hell I was going and probably ended up running in circles the entire time. Which is exactly why I needed this break. Not only did I need to catch my breath, but I also had no clue where I was.
When my heartbeat returned to normal and I was no longer gasping for breath, I slowly stood myself up and brushed the dirt off of my jeans. I looked around me, to see nothing but trees. Everything seems really calm and peaceful right now, so maybe the indominus is nowhere near wherever the hell I am. I looked in the direction that I came from to see something that looked like a golf car leaning against a tree only a few trees down from me. I wondered if it still worked, maybe I could get back to the bungalow. I walked towards it, my foot hitting something and almost tripping me. I looked down to see that I had kicked a Jurassic World construction worker helmet that was covered in dirt and blood. I could feel myself begin to freeze, but I kept telling myself to walk towards the golf cart. I wasn't going to be scared anymore, no way. I got near it and saw that the keys were nowhere in the ignition. Besides, the damn thing was demolished against the tree. I sighed and looked to see if maybe there was anything else around this damn forest.
When I was about to turn around, something caught my eye. I looked straight ahead of me and saw what looked to be ancient ruins being overtaken by the forest trees and brush. How had I not seen this before? I walked towards it cautiously, because Lord knows what creature would jump out at me the moment I opened those doors. Though, there really is only one loose dinosaur. Still, I had to be cautious...but this place could hold something that could maybe help me get back to the bungalow somehow. I had a bad feeling the closer I got to the door, so I just shook my head and turned back around to go the other way. I heard the rustling of some bushes and my heart felt as if it had dropped into my stomach.
I ran the rest of the way towards the old building and pushed one of the old doors open as fast as I could, running into the building. The door shut behind me and the building began to feel eerie. Suddenly, I was regretting my action of choosing this as a hiding place. The entire inside was overtaken by plants, vines, and even tree roots. As my eyes adjusted to the dim lighting, I could begin to make out some of the details. There were fainted dinosaur paintings on the walls, the roof was bringing in a natural sunlight...it looked as if it could have been a central building of some old civilization or something. I began to walk around the nature filled building as thoughts about how this could possibly become my new home ran through my head. I would never see my dad again, my best friend Catherine or even my grandparents. I wonder if Zach and Gray made it out, would I ever see them again? And Uncle Owen, as upset as he made me...I could never hate him. Though I will admit, I did hate him during those seconds that he was yelling at me. He's never raised his voice at me before. He's never belittled me like that...I don't know where it came from. I knew he regretted it because when Claire told him to stop, I could see it written all over his face. But instead of letting him apologize and comfort me...I ran away from him and off into the damn forest that I know nothing about. Uncle Owen was right...I am a child.
Maybe he was right about another thing too. Maybe I shouldn't have come on this vacation. No, he didn't say it exactly like that...but he did basically say that he wanted to send me home. It was the last thing he said to me. I love my Uncle Owen, but part of me really wishes that things were different. I wish my dad didn't decide to take this deployment only days after my mom had died. I wish I was home right now, celebrating the holidays like we used to. I wish we put the Christmas tree up and the house lights. I wish my mom and I were baking cookies and singing Christmas music as my dad laughed and tried to sing-a-long like he always did. Most of all...I wish my mom was still alive.
I wish we could go shopping for our annual matching Christmas pajamas like we've always done. I wish she was going to be there on Christmas morning when we open gifts. I wish she could see me wear the prom dress that she got me while she was in the hospital. I wasn't supposed to know about it, but I saw it on her computer when she was asleep in her hospital bed. It was a sketch of hers that she had sent off to our local boutique to have made and they sent her a picture of the finished product. It was so beautiful, everything that we had talked about...but she wouldn't get to see me in it. I don't even think I could bring myself to wear it.
I could feel myself letting my emotions take over, and before I knew it...I was crying. The tears were falling down my warm cheeks as the sobs escaped my throat. I looked up at the ceiling and sniffled, only to have another sob escape. I took a deep breath and screamed. I was screaming at nothing and yet I could feel the weight start to lift off of my shoulders. I screamed until my lungs began to burn and I had nothing left. I wiped my nose with my sleeve as my lip quivered and took a deep breath. God, that felt so good. It was as if I had just let everything that I've been bottling up since my mother's diagnosis, out. Did I feel one hundred percent better? No, because my mom isn't coming back, my dad is still in God knows where my Uncle hates me and I'm in the middle of an abandoned building on an island where there's a runaway dinosaur.
As I started to calm down, I took in my surroundings and began to realize that I should probably explore this place if I ever wanted to find my way back to the bungalow. I adjusted my backpack straps and took a deep breath, looking for which direction I should go in. I heard a noise coming from the direction of the front entrance and I snapped my head in that direction. It sounded like someone...or something was trying to come in. I looked around for someplace to hide and saw a nearby tree that had somehow sprouted in the building. I ducked behind it, looking around for something to grab in case I needed to defend myself. I looked to my right and saw what looked to be an old replica dinosaur bone from those big displays in museums. I picked it up and held it tightly in my hands, bringing it up as if I was holding a bat.
I could hear the noises continue from outside of the heavy doors and the moment that the sound of the old hinges creaked, I held my breath. The possibilities of what was beyond that door and now inside this building were running endlessly. What if there was more than one dinosaur on the loose? No, that's ridiculous. Dinosaurs can't open doors...right? The door shut and I could hear movement on the ground, getting closer and closer. I gripped the bone in my hands tightly, hoping that I'd be able to easily attack whatever was headed my way. The steps were getting closer to where I was hiding and I knew that if I wanted to attack and escape, I'd have to do it soon. When it sounded like they were right about to stop by the tree, I jumped out and raised the bone above my head, screaming. I heard screams go against mine and I opened my eyes and saw Zach and Gray standing in front of me. I dropped the bone from my hands when I realized who it was and I brought them both into my arms. "Oh my God, it's just you guys." I pulled away from the both of them, hoping that I wasn't completely delusional before giving Gray a second hug. "I can't believe it's you," I pulled away from him and looked at Zach, immediately giving him a hug. "I'm so happy to see you guys."
When I pulled away from Zach, I looked at the both of them and saw Gray studying me. "Are you okay Hailey? You look like you've been-"
"Enough about me," I said, clearing my throat and looking at the both of them. "how did you guys get here?"
"Well, we've just been kind of walking through the forest and we came across this place," he motioned his arms as he looked around the building. "and we figured that maybe we could find something to get us back to the park." His eyes landed back on mine and then traveled up to my head, where his face fell. "What the hell happened to you? You look like you've been dragged through the forest."
"Thanks," I said, not really sure if it was supposed to be a concerned comment or an insult. "Well, after I left you guys, I thought I'd find a way back to my Uncle's bungalow by going across the valley and I actually ended up finding my Uncle and your Aunt Claire instead. Long story short, my Uncle was less enthused to see me outside of the bungalow, yelled at me a little bit and me being me, I sort of hopped on his bike and rode off into the forest..."
"How'd you find this place?" Gray asked, still in awe of the building.
"I was riding his bike through the woods and overcorrected trying to avoid a branch, so I crashed into a tree. I saw a broken down golf cart nearby and I thought I heard that dinosaur thing coming so I ran in here."
Zach stepped towards me and raised his hand, touching the area just surrounding the cut. "Are you okay?" I looked at him, his eyes full of worry as they looked at the wound and then looking into mine.
I stared at him, expecting him to look away at any moment...but he held my gaze. I could feel my cheeks begin to burn and I looked away, nodding my head. "I'm okay."
I could still feel his gaze on me as he stepped away and let his hand fall. I don't know if it was me just imagining things or if it was actually really there...but I think there was some type of tension between us. I don't know what it was, maybe I felt a little bit of it before when we were on the airplane and I just assumed that it was him being a total ass. But whatever it is, I like it. "What is this place?" Gray asked, catching both mine and Zach's attention as he stood a bit further away from Zach and me, looking around the building and holding the bone I was going to use as a weapon in his hand.
Zach and I walked over to him, my eye catching something on the ground. I bent down and picked up the dirtied and faded material. It looked like it was a banner. I brushed off some of the excess dirt off of it to reveal some of the letters. It was ripped on some ends and the only word that I could make out was ruled. I looked around and squinted my eyes. "I think this is Jurassic Park...the original park." Zach and Gray both looked at me as I looked around the building. "I remember my parents and my Uncle telling me all about it when my Uncle got the job here. It was built like twenty-something years ago. Jurassic World was supposed to be its epic return or something."
"What happened to it?" Gray asked, looking at me.
I looked at him to see Zach looking at me, subtly shaking his head. He must know what happened here too. I sighed and dropped the banner. "You know, I'm not one hundred percent sure...but wow, this place is huge."
Zach walked past me as I went to Gray's side and picked up the banner, examining it. "Gray, do you still have those matches?"
Gray gives him a weird look before opening his fanny pack and pulling out some matches. "Why in the world do you have matches in your fanny pack? You're only 11-years-old." I said, looking at him as he handed them to Zach.
"It's a survivor pouch," Gray smiled, as Zach wrapped the banner around the old dinosaur bone and struck a match. "or as Zach used to call it, a nerd pouch. But it looks like it came in handy, didn't it Zach?"
Zach lit the banner on fire and blew out the match before tossing it onto the ground. "Sure it did, now come on. Let's look around this place to see if we can find something to get us back to the park." He started to walk ahead of us, looking for some way to get around. Gray and I stood there, looking at one another as Zach sort of walked towards the wall decorations. It was as if he was really just checking out the place itself instead of going towards the passageway ahead of us.
