Chapter 1
Percy walked down the streets of New York. He passed stores and houses. Finally, he reached his home. Inside was his mother, Sally Jackson. He walked up the steps and noticed a girl sitting under a tree across the park. She was alone, on a gloomy rainy day. There was no one else around but him. Should I help? He wondered. Nah, what good would that do? But something about the girl drew him in.
He walked off the porch and towards the girl. He took an apple out of his backpack and stood beside her. "Here you go." He said passing the apple to her.
"Thank you, Percy." She replied.
"No pro- wait, how do you know my name?" He questioned.
"I'm Grover's sister, Stacy Underwood, you've probably never heard of me." She said as she took a bite.
"What are you doing out here?" He watched as she ate.
"I'm watching that girl." She pointed at a girl sitting on the swings.
Sitting on the swings was a lonely girl. She didn't seem to be having much fun. She was alone, and it seemed as if no one else was there with her. She swung slowly with tears in her eyes.
"Why?" Percy asked quietly.
"No reason... just bored."
Percy checked his phone. It was 3:27, Wednesday, April 12th. He stared at the girl when she turned to look around, he caught a glimpse of her. They looked similar, same hair, same eyes, except that hers were more of a blue than green. She wore jeans that were worn out and ripped on the knees. A t-shirt that was ripped on the sleeves, and a thin jacket. She had nothing but one backpack which was beside the swing set.
Percy walked over to her.
"Hello."
She suddenly turned.
"Oh, um, hi." She wiped her wet hair away. "Would you like me to get off?" She said as she started to get off
"Oh, no, it's alright."
She sat back on the swing. The girl swung slightly, but not a lot.
"Hey, why were you crying?"
She stopped her swinging.
"Well... it's my birthday, but well, I've never had a birthday with my family since I was 5." She wiped tears away.
Percy stepped back.
"Wow, such mean parents."
The girl laughed lightly. She stared at Percy and smiled. Percy watched as her smile grew. He took another glance at her. She was very thin and looked as if she was freezing. He took some money out of his pocket. Next, he grabbed his lunch out of his bag. He passed both of these to her.
"Here, buy yourself something pretty." He smiled.
"No, I couldn't." She said quietly as she pushed the money and food away.
Percy pushed it back. The girl pushed it away. He couldn't let her not have it. He decided just to put it down beside her bag, whether she knew it or not.
Percy walked away passed Stacy, he smiled and tossed her another apple. She took it gladly and she put it in her sack. Stacy watched as he walked away.
"I think he should know..." Stacy said to a boy sitting up in the tree.
"I know Stacy, I know. We can't tell him yet though." The boy looked down at her.
"Grover!" Stacy rubbed the back of her head. "Don't kick me."
He laughed. "Too bad." He snickered.
"Oh, Grover..." She jabbed at his hoof.
"Ow!" He frowned.
Percy turned around. Was that Grover? He wondered as he looked at Stacy. Guess not. He turned back around and walked into the apartment building.
He walked up the stair to his home. He knocked on the door. It unlocked and his mom, Sally, was there.
"Percy!" She smiled as she gave him a bear hug.
"Mom," Percy hugged back then he let go.
They went inside and closed the door. Their home was clean, and not much of a mess. There were blue cookies on the coffee table. He walked over and put his bag down. He sat on the couch and stared out the window.
"Percy, you seem distracted, did something happen at Camp?" His mom asked.
"Oh, nothing, I just met these 2 girls outside. One was Grover's sister." He turned back to her. "I didn't know he had one."
Sally's smile faded a little. "Who is the other girl?"
"I... I don't know. I gave her my lunch and some money. It's her birthday today." He replied.
"Oh, that girl. I've seen her out there every day this year." She started to cut some vegetables.
"Really?" Percy stood and helped out.
"Did you ever figure out her name?" She asked.
"Nah, I'll do that now..." He ran out, as he grabbed his coat and a water bottle.
As he ran down the steps he saw the girl had gone underneath a slide, it has started to rain hard.
"Hey, my name is Percy, yours is?"
He passed her the bottle.
"Thanks." She took it. "I'm Pearl."
