Chapter 9

Song : Apologize by One Republic

"Mum's late..." Ivy impatiently tapped on the couch armrest. I checked my phone. Mum had left 30 minutes ago and she had still not arrived yet. Ivy's tapping began to grow louder and I too began to tap.

When the minute finally changed, I stood up straight away from the seat I was sitting at and grabbed my raincoat.

"I'm going to go check on her."

"Take Ryan with you," Ivy told me, pointing towards Ryan's workroom. I nodded and walked towards the door and knocked on it, impatiently. He opened it after the third knock and I knew I wasn't what he expected.

"Your mother is not back yet?"

"No. You have to come with me to look for her," I told him, handing him his coat. He looked at it but didn't take it. Reminded me of when I smiled at him and he didn't return it.

"But I -"

"I get colds easily as well, just stop being selfish and come with me to find my mum," I told him sternly. He was surprised. Normally it was Ivy that snapped at him, this time, it was me the usually calm and collected twin snapping at him. Which is a good thing, it meant that he knew he had no other choice but to agree with me.

He didn't say anything, he just took his jacket from me and followed after me as I opened the door, placing my hood over my head to protect myself from the raindrops in the outside world.

"Ivy, we'll be back!" I shouted to my sister who I knew was suffering from stomach cramps.

"Be careful!" She shouted back.

Ivy had told us to be careful, but, she never told mum to be careful.

I know to this day that she remembers that very moment and blames herself for mum's accident.

I've always blamed Ryan. I blamed him for sending mum out in the pouring rain. I blamed him for mum getting caught in the accident. If he had just agreed with me and let mum stay at home, mum would've still been alive.

But, now. I've committed an act I know my mum would be ashamed to hear about.

"Because humans want to hide that the true cruel beings... that the true savages are really the humans themselves."

Once again, the hall was drowned with a wave of silence that seemed to be the largest wave that has hit the ocean. Everyone that were gathered were astonished for words.

Stunned.

Bewildered.

Speechless.

Inarticulate.

I glanced over at Emily, frightened of my friend. I couldn't read any of her emotions.

She was a statue. A statue that had many words to unravel but smart enough not to. One question raced my mind.

Where is Aaron?

Isn't he supposed to be here as well.

"Now, what do you think of making it up to Aaron?" Emily spoke calmly to the group of students. They all glanced at each other, frightened to speak to Emily.

"Yeah, let's make it up to Aaron," I spoke up first. Students felt more reassured when the corners of Emily's lips had finally chosen to defy gravity and shoot upwards.

"I guess... I can try to make it up to him," Oliver mumbled.

"I can be nicer."

"I'll stop throwing books at him!"

"I'll stop insulting him!"

"Maybe..."

"We can try to be his friend?"

"His friend."

"Did you guys forget that he's in a gang?"

Then, there's always that one person that has to ruin it every single time.

"He's not in a gang!" Emily defended him, a torrent of red overwhelmed her face.

"But, what about all the proof? What about what he said to Jade?"

"Jade. Tell them the truth," Emily turned to me, the torrent of anger welled up in her eyes creating a dark pool of blue in her normally light blue eyes.

"He didn't actually threaten me," I told them then paused, trying to gather everything I was going to say to let it out, "I was only trying to get him to tell me something and caused that scene on purpose."

"Wait. What?!"

I felt the blood rush to my face as I told them the truth. My heart tried so hard to break its way out of my chest screaming and pounding so hard.

"It's true," I told them in a low voice, however the silence of the room caused it to echo and be heard by everyone.

"Aaron isn't in a gang. Jack and I followed him after school and found out that he's not in a gang nor does he street fight."

With every word I threw at them, the truth slowly began to sink into the sand and drown into their brains, swirling around like a tornado sucking up their every thoughts letting only my voice dominate them.

"So, we... Bullied Aaron for no reason."

"Well, we thought there was a reason, it just wasn't... Right."

"So you admit you were bullying him."

"We've ALL bullied him for a reason that didn't exist in the first place."

Everyone communicated with their faces. Dead silence was the only response that could be heard in the air but, we knew what each and every one of us.

"Let's make it up to Aaron," I told them in return, I received a wave of nodding heads.

"So, where is Aaron?" Someone from the crowd asked, looking towards the front. I looked towards Emily.

Silence.

"Emily?" I broke her out of her trance. She snapped out of it  straight away and looked into my eyes.

"I did text him," Emily brought out her mobile phone from inside her pocket. She stared intensively at the small screen of her phone. No words were exchanged as we silently waited for her to say something.

"Well? Is he not in school?"

"He should be, It is Wednesday so, he's probably at the football pitch practising."

"So? What are we waiting for?"

"For you guys, duh," Someone from the crowd shouted. We all looked over to him and he flushed pink, "Oh, was I not meant to say that?"

— — —

Emily had texted Aaron once again, but, he didn't reply. We had split up to search for Aaron around school and dues to the split up, word had spread faster than the plague.

Everyone knew about Aaron.

Everyone felt guilty.

Everyone helped look for him.

No one found him.

Nor did his brother know.

Not only was Aaron missing, but, Calum was missing too.

"Where could they be?" Emily panicked, biting her nails and checking up on her phone screen every few seconds, hoping magically that Aaron would turn to the amazing technology humans created and actually communicate.

But, there was nothing.

"You don't think something bad happened?" Someone from my group of searchers asked. The red in Emily's cheeks slowly drained away and white clouds took over her entire face.

I could tell she truly cared about Aaron.

"I'm sure he's fine," I tried to reassure Emily. But, even I know that something is wrong.

Why else would he have suddenly disappeared?

Emily sensed the tremor in my voice and knew I was lying to myself and to everyone. She still pushed the corners of her mouth upwards, trying to lighten the mood. We stood in silence, not knowing what else we could do.

"I'm sure he probably just went home."

"It's only lunch. Calum's missing too."

"Perhaps he went out to get food from the shops."

"He hates doing that," Emily shook her head, crossing off every good possible cause of his disappearence.

Then, what else could be the cause of his disappearence?

Suddenly, the school speakers that are found in every corridor, classroom, hall and bathroom began to create a static sound. Each and every head rotated towards the nearest speaker and shut their mouths. Holding our breaths, we awaited the voice of the headteacher to swim through the corridors of the school.

"Good afternoon students. I have heard the word of the students. Each and every one of you searching for the student Aaron Phillips and his friend Calum Roberts. Good new's is that I know where they are," The headteachers deep voice swam through our minds causing us to cheer at his last sentance. I saw the relief that flushed through Emily's face and the leech that burdened my chest had finally been killed by the salt.

Mr.Winterson, the head, cleared his throat into the mic creating the silence he had created so easily before.

"I truly am pleased to hear your loud cheers roar around the school and it pains me to say this, but," Winterson paused. Confused glances were passed through every student. We could hear Winterson take a deep breathe before he finished his sentence.

"Aaron Phillips has been submitted to hospital after getting caught up in a recent shooting."

Silence.

It lasted for 5 minutes before everyone began speaking again.

"What did he say?" Emily croaked, holding onto my arm, holding in place the well that tried so hard to break in both her eyes.

"A shooting? You don't think he died?"

"He can't have died."

"No way, this is a joke. A prank."

"Yeah, Aaron's way of getting revenge at us."

"Silence students!"  Winterson shouted, halting all the speaking, "I understand that you may be crushed, shocked, in denial however, I have not finished. Aaron right now is in a life or death situation, his friend Calum was lucky enough to get away with just a shot to the arm."

"It's true."

"Aaron might die."

"It's all our faults."

"We should've made a friend in Aaron."

"It's too late now."

"He still has a chance of survival, right?" Emily looked into my eyes. I pulled her into a hug, not wanting to stare into her broken wells that had water gushing out of them.

"Of course, Aaron won't leave, he won't leave the people he loves," I rubbed her back and felt my own river form.

This is all my fault.

If only.

If only I hadn't caused that massive commotion and caused most of the school to turn against him.

If only I had just tried to see the good in him instead of all the negative features that reminded him.

If only I didn't torture him till he broke.

If only I made a friend in him.

Then, he wouldn't even have left the school and get caught up in that massacre.

Aaron would've been happily in school surrounded by many friends.

The way it should've been.

The way it could've been.

Now, instead, I watch students of my school that bullied him along with myself yearn over Aaron as we hear the news of him being in a life or death situation. All because we were too late to apologize to him. All because we didn't realise what we were doing was bad. All because I only thought of myself.

Do I regret my actions?

Of course I do.

I only thought of myself and never thought of Aaron's feelings as I crushed them everyday.

Now I know.

It doesn't matter if the person always held a poker face. It doesn't matter if you're angry. It doesn't matter if they remind you of someone. It doesn't matter. Because, in the end they're still humans. Humans who have feelings. Humans who just want to get through life without a large, unexpected storm hitting them smack on their faces and destroying their lives.

What I'm saying is. They don't people like... me coming into their lives and doing what I did to Aaron. They don't want people like Oliver coming into their lives and throwing rotten tomatoes at them. They don't want people like Jemma coming into their lives and throwing rude insults at them. They don't want people like Mike coming into their lives and purposely trying to trip them up.

They don't want bullies in their lives.

No one does.

So, before you do something, think.

Is this bullying?

Am I going too extreme?

Would I like it if something similar happened to me?

And, if you've done something horrible. Don't hesitate to make it up to that person.

Because, you'll never know when it's too late.

OMG! I FINISHED MY FIRST STORY. I'm so happy right now. Kinda.

My plan for the ending of this story was to make Aaron comitt suicide and have Jade regret it and everything. But, then I got attached to him and I wanted his final scene or his death scene to be somewhat different.

I'm a bit iffy about Suicide. I honestly don't know what to think of it.

Many people say it's selfish, dying and leaving the ones you love to suffer from your death. But, if someone commits suicide then they probably believed that they had no other choice.

I didn't want Aaron to commit Suicide. He's probably thought of it, but, I didn't want him to actually try to kill himself.

I won't say if Aaron has died or not, but, I'll leave it up to you to decide if he has. I'll let you guys decide how things turn out after they visit Aaron.
