CHAPTER ONE: RETURN TO KING'S LANDING
"Why a son though?"

His dragon Hades roared as loud as it could as Maeron felt the breeze brush against his skin. As it flew proudly to King's Landing Maeron stomach bubbled in anxiety. It wasn't everyday he came to feel anxiety as most of the time he was as confident as a dragon taking their first flight.

As he hasn't returned to King's Landing to visit family nor did he attend any meeting. For a year as he was grieving over the loss of both his children and his lady wife Elissa Lannister death. He wasn't sure how people would greet him as many already thought he was a scoundrel already.

As Daemon Targaryen never attended the small council meeting. Too busy with other stuff that Maeron never thought of doing other than joining his brother in war to give a helping hand.

His brother Daemon was there when his wife passed away. Maeron only wished it was him that passed away that day and the pain of giving a birth was placed on him. As he still remembers Elissa scream that echoed the chamber when she tried to push the baby out of her.

But there he was alive and well climbing off his dragon and dropping it off to the Dragonpit. Hades roared as loud as they could to the Dragonkeepers as Maeron chuckled.

"Welcome back Prince Maeron." Harwin Strong greeted the youngest Prince as Maeron walked toward the carriage.

"It is good to be back. I suppose." Maeron answered as he got in the carriage.

As he arrived in the Red Keeps he quickly rushed in. He knew he was late as he decided to arrive back at King's Landing only informing a few people he was close to. Maeron always attended the small council meeting even if there were better things to do he would rather not lose his alliances.

"We were just wondering when you are going to arrive back, brother." King Viserys greeted him with a friendly smile. Even if they never truly got along much they always treated each other with respect.

"I apologize for my absence, brother." Maeron apologized returning a smile.

As he took a seat a light everyone's attention went to Lord Corlys.

"My lords."

"The growing alliance among the Free Cities has taken to styling itself the Triarchy." Lord Corlys informed them as he unraveled the map.

"They have massed on Bloodstone and are presently ridding the Stepstones of its pirate infestation."

"Well, that sounds suspiciously like good news, Lord Corlys." Viserys said as Maeron looked at him unsure as he knew he missed out on a lot of information.

"A man called Craghas Drahar has styled himself the prince-admiral of this Triarchy. They call him the Crabfeeder due to his inventive methods of punishing his enemies." Lord Corlys said as Maeron thought that was a ridiculous name. He would probably throw himself off a building if he was ever titled the Crabfeeder for his way.

"And are we meant to weep for dead pirates?" Viserys asked as his daughter Rhaenyra entered the room.

"No, your Grace."

"Rhaenyra, you're late." Viserys greeted his eldest child.

"The King's cup-bearer must not be late. Leave people wanting for cups." Viserys told her with a hint of disappointment lingering in his voice. Maeron notices how much Rhaenyra has changed since the last time they saw each other.

"I was visiting, mother." Rhaenyra explained to her father as she gave a kiss to his cheek.

"On dragonback?" As Rhaenyra quickly slipped away from Viserys.

"Hey, Your Grace and Prince Maeron, at Prince Daemon's urging the crown has invested significant capital in the re-training and re-equipping of his City Watch."

"I thought you might urge your brother to fill his seat on the council and provide an assessment of his progress as commander of the Watch." Lord Beesbury suggested as Maeron looked at the empty seat next to him.

"Do you think Daemon is distracted by his present tasks?"

"And that his thoughts and energies are occupied?" Viserys questions him.

"Well, one would hope so, considering the associated costs." Lord Beesbury answered as Rhaenyra was about to give Maeron a drink.

"No need, Rhaenyra." Maeron said as he just gave a friendly smile.

"You sure, uncle?" Rhaenyra asked, concerned as she knew Maeron was never once to back down from a drink.

"I'm sure. Thank you anyway." As Rhaenyra moved onto the next cup.

"If those shipping lanes should fall, it will begger our ports."

"The crown has heard your report, Lord Corlys and takes it under advisement." Otto Hightower assured Lord Corlys but Maeron thought otherwise. He knew Otto Hightower was a man of greed and willing to do anything to be placed on the throne or at least to be near the throne at all.

"Shall we discuss the Heir's Tournament, Your Grace?" Otto suggested to the king.

"I would be delighted. Viserys agreed, looking at Otto Hightower.

"Will the maesters' name day prediction hold, Mellos?" Viserys called out to Mellos.

"You must understand that these things are mere estimations, my King and we have all been poring over the moon charts and we feel that our forecast is as accurate as it can be." Mellos answered as the Lords and King continued their conversation. Maeron was in shock that he didn't know his brother was going to have another child even after they knew what happened to his wife.

"Before the game are over, my son will be born and the whole realm will celebrate." Viserys told them with joy in his voice. A slight frown casted on Maeron's face as he looked at his brother with a bitter look in his eyes.

"We have no way of predicting the sex of the child." Mellos informed the King who desperately wanted a son to be his heir.

"Why a son though?" Maeron asked his brother he knew the answer everyone did but he just wanted to hear his brother say it out loud to him.

"Because Rhaenyra is a girl and not a boy, Maeron. Besides I know there's a boy in the Queen's belly. I know it." Viserys said with such confidence not knowing how his daughter felt so disheartening. That she was always going to be just a spare just like Maeron and Daemon.

"What's wrong with Rhaenyra being a girl? She can make a great Queen; it just depends on their intention and what their goal for the realm is." Maeron explained to Viserys just look at his younger brother if he was crazy.

"You and I know they would never accept Rhaenyra as heir." Viserys whispered to Maeron as he rolled his eyes.

"And if you wanted to, you could have changed history." Maeron said back as he got up from his seat and left the meeting without another word.
