Chapter 3

-Beckham-

Once I landed solidly on the ground, I broke out in a run. I had no clue where I was going, but I knew I couldn't sit still. However, I tripped over something on the ground and fell flat on my face.

"Oh man, that must've hurt," I heard someone laugh. Sitting up and holding my forehead, I looked around. Chanson and Cowyn must have stayed behind when we left, and Chanson was smirking in my direction.

"What are you doing back here?" Cowyn asked, concerned. It was obvious Chanson had given the first remark.

"I'm looking for Laelyn," I mumbled, standing up and dusting myself off. "She was taken by-"

I stopped short when I realized what I'd tripped over. There, on the ground, was a red converse sneaker - the exact one Laelyn had been wearing. I whipped around, looking in every direction for the man who I now firmly believed was another demon.

"Lyn was-?" Chanson panicked, before I cut him off.

"Where did he go? Did you see him? And where is she?" I asked angrily.

"You're throwing out a lot of pronouns and not many specifics," Cowyn commented warily. I took a deep breath to calm down and directed my attention away from Chanson - he wasn't helping my anger - and onto Cowyn.

"The second Jaycen was done explaining, some demon guy took her!" I said, still too emotional to think.

"Who the hell is Jaycen?" Chanson asked. I rolled my eyes.

"A friend of my sister's, apparently. And he knows way too much about me and Laelyn, but that doesn't matter right now! Where did the demon go?!" I shouted.

"Beck, we didn't see anyone, honest." Cowyn promised, raising his hands to show he meant no harm.

"How could she have passed you without you seeing her?" I wondered aloud.

"How do you know she was here?" Chanson asked. I sighed in annoyance.

"Her shoe, idiot," I replied. Okay, calm down, I told myself. However, I didn't listen.

"How was I supposed to know that?" Chanson exploded, louder than I'd responded. I balled my hands into fists and walked up to him, ready to release my anger-

"Guys, stop!" Cowyn said. "If we want to find Laelyn, we're going to have to work together. What's your problem with each other anyway?" I thought about it, unable to reply, but nonetheless refused to back down. Chanson and I stared intensely at one another, daring each other to make a move, until finally Chanson looked away and stepped back. I smirked, proud.

Just as I was about to say something I'd regret, I heard a gasp behind me. I spun around to see Jaycen, Isaac, Mason, and a wide-eyed Grace. Jaycen smiled politely and waved, the others standing in an awkward silence until Grace looked up at me.

"This is... Another dimension?" She asked, in awe.

Cowyn's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "Who's that?" He asked. "And who's that?" He asked again, seeing Jaycen and his outlandish Knight outfit. I decided not to respond, watching Jaycen inspect the area. He noticed the shoe and slowly approached Cowyn and Chanson.

"Have you seen Karma?" He asked calmly.

"Karma?" Chanson repeated. "That's not really something you can see-"

"It's different," Cowyn laughed. Jaycen shook his head.

"You'd be surprised how similar they really are," he muttered darkly, a drastic change from his tone earlier.

"Sorry, what?" I asked. He shook his head.

"Perhaps it is not the correct time. I shall give you all time to think." He bowed and stepped back, as if to give us space. What?!

"Not the correct time for what?" I wondered. He stepped up.

"To explain," he shrugged, then stepped back again. I sighed - there was no way to get real information from this guy.

"Where are we?" Grace asked.

"Soryx," Jaycen answered.

"The second dimension," I clarified, frustrated that he seemed to answer everyone's questions but mine. Grace simply stared at us, still amazed.

"What's going on?" Chanson asked.

"Something you don't need to be a part of," I responded angrily. Laelyn wasn't safe, and I had no clues as to where she was. Why can't I just do my job for once?

"I wasn't asking you," Chanson snapped. I clutched my heart in fake pain.

"Oh no, I'm so hurt," I said sarcastically in a monotone voice. "Cowyn, did you sense any fluctuations in the magic levels in the area?" Cowyn took a second before answering.

"I did, actually, right before you appeared. I assumed it was the portal, but now that I think about it, the portal earlier didn't give off a signal at all," he responded, hand to his chin in thought. "Which means Laelyn and her captor may very well have been here, but they left."
I cried out in frustration. "You've got to be kidding!" I shouted. We're always one step behind! "Well where did they go, then?"

Jaycen cleared his throat and stepped back towards us all. "I have a theory." He paused, and I waited patiently for a continuation - well, patiently for about two seconds.

"Just tell us what it is!" I shouted. "Saying you have one doesn't help in the slightest, and we don't exactly have all the time in the word."

"Do you know where Lyn could be?" Mason asked, concern evident in his voice.

"Like I said, I have a theory, and that's all it is. It could very well be incorrect, but I'm guessing there aren't only three dimensions," Jaycen explained. "Soryx and Earth seem to be linked, but Androma exists on its own. It wouldn't make sense that Androma is the only independent dimension, so there must be more."

"I have to agree," Issac said. "If there are three known dimensions, odds are there's at least one more. It just wouldn't make sense, because they are either random or created by someone who would live somewhere else, of course."

"So Lyn could be in a dimension we haven't discovered yet?" Mason construed. Jaycen and Isaac nodded.

"That helps a total of zero percent," I pointed out. "I can't create a portal to a place I've never been, I wouldn't be able to think of it."

"That's true," Cowyn commented, "But we could try a tracing spell. I've never traced something across dimensions, but I suppose it's worth a shot."

"Anything to get Lyn back," Chanson said. I glared at him.

"So what exactly are we looking for?" I asked, overriding his comment.

"It's not a what, it's a who," Jaycen replied. "Karma."

"I'm... Pretty sure that's a what," Isaac said. "Not even that, it's just an idea. Not many people even believe that here."

"Karma is the Demon King, not a concept," Jaycen said. "In fact, the concept came from the idea that if you messed up... Well, Karma would happen to you." We all stared at him in silence for a while, processing this information.

"So... Lyn's been taken by the Demon King who inspired the idea of bad luck?" Mason asked. "That's... Well, that's-"

"Terrible, we realize," I cut him off. I knew I should have calmed down by now, but something inside of me wouldn't allow it.

"Hey guys?" Chanson asked. I ignored him, but Jaycen didn't.

"Yes?" He asked.

"Wasn't Link with you when you traveled to Earth?" Chanson pointed out. I looked around, realizing he wasn't here anymore.

"I, uh... Yes," I answered, knowing that not only had I lost Laelyn but her twin brother, too. "I don't know where-"

"I am sure Karma took him as well," Jaycen said, surprisingly cutting me off. I was so taken aback I didn't interrupt him when he continued. "Seeing as the twins are the last immunes besides the Descendants. The demons want to draw out the Spirits."

"The spirits of what?" Mason asked, creeped out.

"Simply the Spirits. The opposite of Demons is the only description I can give, as that is all we know."

"How do you know this stuff?" Isaac asked. Jaycen held up the leather bound journal in his hands.

"My ancestors have been tracking all of this for millennia," he explained. "It's all in the journal, except the Spirit Scroll."

"And that is?" I asked impatiently. Why couldn't Jaycen just tell a complete story for once? He took a deep breath before answering.

"I am not completely sure, however it is inscribed-" I cleared my throat, and he stopped. "I apologize, Beckham. What I mean to say is, the journal explains that the Spirit Scroll will bring us to the Cave of Legends. Only the Descendants can find it, and it is the only way to defeat the demons once and for all," he finished. Finally, something that made more sense.

"So we're supposed to be saviors of some sort?" Isaac asked, and Jaycen nodded again. "Why can't the Spirits take care of this themselves?"

"They are complete pacifists, made of goodness and light. They cannot use their powers for violence, even when it is necessary," Jaycen answered. I nodded, finally understanding.

"So we're the worlds' last hope." I stated. Jaycen didn't respond, which presumably meant I was correct.

"If we don't defeat the demons in our lifetime, the human dimensions - all of them - will belong to the Demon King," he finally said. Human dimensions?

"Hold on, what did you just say?" I asked.

"What?"

"You said human dimensions. Specifically human dimensions, why would you say that?" I asked. Jaycen shrugged as if it were no big deal.

"Because of the demons; they must have a dimension, I'm sure. I fail to see how that would help, though, as you have never seen it and-"

He continued talking, but I felt that all-too-familiar wave of coldness and suddenly my mind was thrown to the future.
