7) The Beginning of Something New

Ned sat there in the booth of the diner with his mouth slightly open, still processing the thought racing in his mind. He was still facing the window, away from the two people that were now the focus of his thoughts. The air felt light and a bit frigid as he took a moment to process his thoughts. Then, he turned around slowly in his seat to face Peter and Michelle.

Michelle was still standing at the foot of the table, her thumbs resting inside the side pockets of her jacket as she kept her elbows close to her sides. Peter stayed seated in the spot Ned saw him last. He now had his hands clasped together; one of his thumbs nervously massaging them as he watched his friend look upon them with bewildered eyes. His mouth closed and he gulped quickly, which made Peter terrified. This was going to be the hardest thing he was going to have to explain to Ned, and it was now being revealed to him. If Ned didn't support his choice to be with Michelle, then it was going to be trickier to manage their relationship when school resumed in a couple weeks.

Ned gathered himself mentally and asked "Wait... you guys are dating?", rather shocked, but in a tone that didn't hint at any kind of disapproval. It mostly was kind of a way someone would speak when recovering from a shock. The two accused looked to each other, sharing a moment of unsteady hope as they prepared to tell their friend that they were in fact dating.  They looked back to Ned and said their own version yes together: Michelle saying "Yup," and Peter saying "Yeah."

"YEESS!!" Ned burst out with his fist chopping down triumphantly. "Yes! Yes! Oh my God!" he continued to cry out in glee. Peter and Michelle once again looked to each other. This time completely shocked themselves, and a bit confused. They certainly never thought Ned would react this way, which piqued their interest. "I knew you guys would be good together."

"Ahem" Michelle coughed, breaking Ned's excitement to a small degree. "I'm sorry, but how exactly did you know that, Leeds?" Her tone was dry, but quizzical.

"I don't know?" Ned replied, "I just figured that you guys would seem like a decent couple."

"Yeah, but... " Peter spluttered, "Why did you think that?"

"Oh, you never noticed, but she was always staring at you during school, dude" he explained, and Peter's eyebrows furrowed in realization. Michelle did the same but did so in a way that tried to hide her embarrassment. She had thought that no one had known that she had been keeping an eye on Peter, or at least cared enough to question why she ever would.

"You were watching me?" Peter blurted out to Michelle, a flabbergasted expression on his face as he shifted his attention between his two friends. "How come I never knew that?"

"Oh, don't flatter yourself, Parker" Michelle quickly snapped. "I watch a lot of people, as you already know." She had made it a point to Peter that she did like him a bit longer than before they started seeing each other at the beginning of the summer. She just didn't tell him how far back it was. "I just didn't know some of those people would be watching back" she said assertively toward Ned, raising an eyebrow sharply to intimidate him. Ned just smiled cheekily, like a kid that just let his parents know what he was getting for Christmas. And to Ned's credit, she never did consider that others my be watching and just decided to stay silent about it. It would be quite often that someone like Flash or someone that has something to prove would call out her actions, appearance, or words as something to poke fun at, or just pester her with. But Ned had seen the things that everyone else had seen and hadn't said a word. Which in her mind, said that he didn't wish to be negative to her or harass her. He was just the easy going fellow that everyone seemed to like because of it. She appreciated Ned for that and knew that it was going to be good having Ned know that she and Peter were together.

"But still, you were watching me?" Peter said again. "And you knew about it and didn't tell me about it" he said to Ned this time. Ned chuckled nervously while he searched for a valid excuse for why he never bothered to tell him of his suspicions. "Well, I didn't know whether you'd be interested in her or not."

Michelle looked to both of them as she lowered herself down into the seat next to Peter. "He's interested now. So, you better get used to it!" she said witfully. Peter blushed a bit, knowing that her forward sass was bound to come out at some point to show Ned that they were being serious. "Wow! Way to just force our new relationship on Ned" he chirped back at her. Both turned to face each other, mostly to address the outrageous statements made by the other. "You gonna do something about it, Loser" she continued the back and forth chirping.

"Aww, you guys are already bickering like a couple. It's so cute!" Both Peter and Michelle blushed a bit in embarrassment, not believing that Ned could ever get this excited about them being a couple. They ceased their little squabble and turned to face Ned, with Michelle adding a playful slug to Peter's arm for good measure. Peter added a little elbow shove for his own benefit, making Ned laugh even more at their playful feud. "So, how did you guys end up hanging out and everything?"

"It's actually weird that you ask that" Peter started, "because it kind of starts on the last day of school." Ned settled into his seat and propped his arms and hands under his chin to listen to the story. Michelle rolled her eyes humorously at this, like he was the star of his own comedy show or something. "After you left gym class that day" Peter continued, "I went to lunch and didn't know where to sit."

"So, you decided to sit next to MJ" Ned exclaimed in assumption. "No, he decided to sit up against the wall on the far end of the cafeteria" Michelle corrects him dryly.

"Dude, you sat against the wall? That's a really lonely way to send your last day of school."

"That's where I came in" Michelle took over in telling the story. "Although, he wasn't so content with my company. Still, he warmed up to it eventually."

"And that started the spark between you, right?"

"Actually, we didn't see each other for another week, I think" Peter said, MJ nodding in agreement. "I was out... uh..." he started hesitating, as he knew that he came to the center that day to do some searching on J-Mac at the time.

"He was job searching at the center when we met up again" MJ finished for him, to which Peter just chuckled and went along with it. Ned smiled, remembering that Peter had told him that his girlfriend works at the center. This only made sense and he started to fill in the blanks. "And so you guys started working together from there, letting your unrestful desire for each other continue to grow" he said, once again jumping to conclusions.

"NO!" Peter and Michelle both said in unison, making Ned grow timid a bit. He couldn't help it. It was just too fun to think about how these two opposites ended up liking each other. But he just sat in silence from that point and listened to their story.

"The way we got together was actually messy" Peter started, "filled with an edgy cat lady, a couple young thugs, and a couple explosives." Ned couldn't help but quirk his interest at the sound of explosives having a part in the way his best friend and their decathlon leader. Both of them saw the confusion and interest etched in his eyes and knew that his imagination was going wild with crazy ideas as to how it could possibly have any part in the story.

"Oh, we should tell you" MJ suddenly said, "I know he's bug boy" now whispering so the other diners didn't hear. Ned's eyes went widen in excitement again, and his mouth hung open with his teeth shimming with a boyish charm. Peter smiled, knowing that Ned would be excited about this piece of information. Ever since Ned had found out that he was Spider-Man, he had always wanted to talk with someone their age about it, and now was his time to do so.

"What?! Oh my gosh! How did he tell you?"

"He didn't tell me. I figured it out a while before" she answered. Peter smiled but hung his head at the fact that she made it seem easy to figure out he was a web-slinging crime fighter. "It's kind of sad that he's a superhero and he can't hide his secret identity." "UM, can we talk about that later" Peter cut in, clearly feeling comfortable about the topic. Ned and MJ both snickered. Ned even prompted her for a fist bump to tease him even further, which she accepted. Peter just shook his head and rolled his eyes and continued the story.

"Anyway, after a few incidents and close calls, I guess you can say we just sort of... realized that we liked each other."

"Oh, that's so sweet" Ned said, "do you guys have a song?"

"A song?" Peter questioned. Ned was quick to explain, "A song! You know, the song that plays when two people realize that they're in love with each other. Like in the movies and stuff."

"Ned, I don't think MJ and I have a song" Peter said. "Do we?" He turned to his right, wondering if she had the same thought as he did.

"'Hoppipolla' was playing when we agreed to start going out" she said casually, not really showing whether she cared or not. Peter stayed quiet for a moment as the memory replayed in his head, until he remembered that the Sigur Ros song was indeed playing while they were watching "We Bought a Zoo" on their first official night as a couple. "Oh, yea! That's right!"

"But technically, 'Good Vibrations' was playing when..." she trailed off, thinking that scenario was a "just-between-them" kind of information. To her, it was just a moment that was never fully realized until a few nights later. So it wasn't a moment that needed to be talked about until Ned was used to being around them. "You know what, never mind. If we're going to assign a song, I think Hoppipolla fits."

"Okay..." Ned said, clearly still lingering on the thought of what could of happened when "Good Vibrations" was playing. "So, are you excited to go to the concert MJ?"

"Yeah" she said passively. "Maybe not as excited as you guys, but still, I think I'll have fun."

"You know, Peter. I never asked where the concert is."

"Oh, it's at a music festival in Jersey, so I think we should be going soon if were going to make it in time."

"I'm ready if you guys are" Ned said, grabbing his drink and gulping it down as quickly as he could. "Let's go!" Peter and Michelle looked to each other and shrugged. They slid out of their seats and prepared to leave. Peter paid for he and Ned's refreshments as Ned and Michelle stood outside the diner to wait for him.

"So" she said to Ned, "you're not in anyway freaked out with me and Peter being together."

"No" Ned simply answered. "Should I be?"

"No, it's just... this is a first for me. Him too. And we both aren't sure how people are going to react to us being a couple." Michelle started to frown the more she explained, as she felt that she was venturing into territory that she hadn't trekked since she confessed her feelings to Peter.

Ned smiled and said honestly, "You have nothing to worry about. You guys are lucky to be with each other. And I know that you guys will find ways to get through it. And if I'm being honest, some people may be a little scared to make front of you. And Peter, he's too loyal to let anyone get between him and the ones he cares about."

"How do you know that?"

"I'm his best friend" he answered, "its something that I just have to believe. Just like how Aunt May needs to believe that he will always come home every time he goes out. And it's something that you'll have to believe in each other I guess."

"Why do you guess?"

"I've never been in a relationship, so I don't much about them. Only what I can learn and observe in movies and television."

"Ha!" she chuckled with a smile. "Of course. Thanks, Ned."

"Of course, anytime." Just then, Peter exited the diner to join them. "Okay, who's ready to go to a Billy Joel concert?!

And with that, the three friends took off toward the nearest subway station that would take them all the way across the city and two rivers to get to New Jersey for their first adventure as a trio. This should be quite a night.

A/N- And so it begins, the start of one the greatest teenage trios in recent movie history. Hope you guys are enjoying it and are looking forward to what I have in store.

Honesty time, I'm not really feeling that inspired to continue the way I had planned on this story. I'm thinking about finishing up this concert story line and then just doing little one shots of things I would have put in to make the story seem exciting. Tell if you would like something like that, cause I feel like my stuff here isn't as good as it has been.

Again, I hope you guys enjoyed the chapter. Leave a vote if you did, and don't forget to express your thoughts in the comments. Be sure to look for my "April Updates" announcement to find out when the next chapter will be released. Until next time, BYE!!!
