12) Captain's Orders

It was mid afternoon in Queen's, the summer sun was shining brightly, and the heat was at a moderate 78 degrees. However, not everyone was outside enjoying the beautiful weather. Inside the community center, Peter and Michelle were playing games with the kids again. The theme of the day was jump ropes, so any game that involved jumping and hopping in over a rope was fair game. One of the games they played was "Jump the Brook," which is a game where the space between two ropes increases after every turn. The players are eliminated if they touch the ropes or step in the space between; the last player standing wins. Other games included hopscotch for the kids that didn't feel confident with their jump roping skills, Simon Says with jump ropes, and as a finale, a double dutch showcase. The two teens spun the ropes nicely, allowing the kids to showcase their skills and have fun. They hoped to achieve as much fun for the kids as possible, as the following day would be the start of the school year for everyone in the New York area.

The last night of summer is always a big one. It's a night filled with a lot of dread, but a lot of excitement as well. The thoughts of new adventures and memories to make glimmered in their most sentimental eyes, but the worry of new challenges and new people also made them nervous of what to expect. Peter, Michelle, and Ned all knew this, so they thought it would be best to have a movie night at Peter's apartment later that night. They didn't know what movie to watch, so they arranged to each bring a movie they thought would be good for everyone to watch. Then, they would decide that night. Peter and Michelle were very excited for it, but still, they had to make sure their work with the kids was done first.

The center is an essential place for kids during the school year. At this time of the year, it donates new backpacks and supplies to kids from families that are financially incapable of buying their own. As kids came and went through the gym, Frank would stand in the gym office with a clipboard and line-up of new backpacks to handout. Anytime he wasn't handing them out, he would look out into the gym, watching his daughter and Peter smiling and enjoying the fun with the kids. He smiled, particularly at Peter, seeing how attentive and engaged he was with the kids. In his mind, he was thinking about he made the right choice about the thing he was going to speak with him about after.

When it came to five o'clock, the kids were sent home with their new school supplies and beaming smiles on their faces. They said goodbye to Peter and MJ, some even hugging them, and went off to start a new school year. Peter and MJ started picking up the equipment that was spread out through out the gym, just as Frank came out to help them. "Great job, guys!" he complimented, "way to finish the summer strong!"

"I don't think we've ever had that many kids before" Peter said, accounting for the sixty to seventy kids that came through. It was definitely an increase from the usual ten or fifteen they usually get on a normal day. "The last day of the summer is always the craziest" MJ commented. "Has been ever since we started here" Frank added. Peter answered with an amazed expression, his eyebrows raised high and his lips forming a face of enthusiasm. "Wow, that's crazy! It was really fun though."

"When you're done putting everything away Peter, do you mind speaking with me in the office?" Frank asked. "No, not at all" Peter answered respectfully. "Great" Frank replied and went back to the office.

"Should I be worried about that?" Peter turned to MJ, as they put the last couple things in the supply bucket. She didn't answer but did try to hide a mischievous little grin. "What?" Peter asked out of curiosity.

"I'm not going to say a word" is what she said, while pretending to lock her mouth with a key. She took the bucket and dragged it to the supply closet, while Peter took the long and dreadful walk to the office. He wondered if he was about to be told that he needed to spend less time her because it was distracting MJ, or if it was that he had been given the job. Or if it wasn't about work at all, and it was something personal. Maybe something about him or MJ that he wanted to share. He didn't know what to expect.

Finally, he walked in, where Frank was doing a final check on the number of donations the center had handed out on his clipboard. "Take a seat, Pete. I'll be a sec" he said, and Peter did as he was told. It actually took about fifteen seconds until Frank finally turned to him. "So Peter, how are things?"

Peter wasn't expecting that. "Things are good, sir" he answered. "Are you enjoying your time here?"

"I think so..." he said confidently. "I like working with the kids. They're so much fun."

"Yeah, they are fun. And I can hear as they walk out that they really like you too" Frank said smiling. He reached to the side and slid a stack of papers closer to him. Peter noticed but said nothing. "Still any luck finding a job?" Frank continued. Peter shook his head, staying neutral in his disposition. Frank nodded his head, "Michelle has told me that you're quite the genius in science. Is that true?"

"I wouldn't say I'm a genius" Peter said nervously. "But I am really good at it."

"Good. Cause' I was wondering if you would like to be our science tutor for our after-school program" Frank proposed. He picked up the stack of papers and handed it to Peter to look over. "It would be every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from four to 4:00 to 5:30 starting next week. Some of the kids that you've worked with here will be there, so I can rely on a level of trust that they'll be respectful toward you, and you toward them." He continued bringing up talking points to sell him on the position, while Peter continued looking over the papers in his hand. Some were a list of academic learning standards, as well as a bunch of policies he had to uphold if he took the job. "It's a huge responsibility, Peter. One that frankly, I'm finding difficult to fill. What do you say?"

Later, Peter and Michelle walked down the steps from the center entrance. After every shift together, they would go into the alley to talk for a bit before Peter went out on patrol. Michelle had a huge grin on as she took the lead out of the building. "I knew you would say yes" she said overconfidently.

"Well, I think it would be great" he said, "It's a job, which means I'll be making money, I'll be able to help kids with their schoolwork, and... um... "

"You'll be able to have a decent excuse to miss decathlon meetings..." MJ said with a certain tone that she was known to have. Peter's eyes froze, realizing another thing in his life he had to think about. "Oh my gosh, decathlon! I totally forgot about that. And you're the..."

"Captain!?! Sure am" she replied with a sense of authority. "And as captain, I think it would be best to push you to a bench role."

"WHAT? WHY?!" Peter exclaimed. "I can commit myself to the team. Sure, there will be a few bumps in the road, but I can be there."

"Peter, as much as I want to believe that will happen, I know it won't." She spoke with a clear mind, not showing any sign of letting her decision be compromised by her feelings for him. "I know you feel like you have a responsibility to the team, but I have a responsibility too, Peter. I need to make sure everyone is fully committed and ready for our upcoming competitions. If you skip one session, I'll at least know you'll be doing one of two things."

Peter was bummed out. He really thought he had a decent social group with the members of decathlon, and a solid chance to help the team go all the way to Nationals. Still, MJ's points made a lot of sense. He did shake a lot of after-school practices and mock competitions due to his commitment to being Spider-Man. Now with this new job, his commitments were going to be pulled into three separate directions if he continued to stay with the team full time. "I cant believe I'm saying this, but... you're right."

They turned into the alley, hiding behind a dumpster and a few crates. "I know I'm right" she bragged, but in the calm way. "You know you would flake on us every time somebody needs saving."

"Yeah... or if some kid is at risk of failing 5th grade science."

"Yeah, that won't happen in the 5th grade" she huffed. "Grades don't matter at that level."

"Really? I was always told that my grades mattered."

"That's just what they want you to think" she answered very ominously. Peter laughed and started taking his clothes off. Michelle turned around, making sure that no one entered the alley to see him chance into his costume. She often looked back to make sure no one else was coming from the other direction, but also to sneak a peak at Peter's physique. She smirked at how quickly he tried to get into the suit and no show how naked he was with only his boxers and socks on. She chuckled to herself and resumed her watch.

He finished putting on the suit, clumped his clothes into a ball and handed them to her. "I still can't believe I agreed to carry your clothes around with me."

"Hey! You're a big help for doing this" he reassured her. "Once every while when I leave my clothes or a backpack in the lobby, I always find it missing. This way I can be sure that it's safe."

"So, I've turned into your laundry maid?" she snarked, to which Peter was quick to correct. "You know I don't think of you that way."

"Mmhmm, sure..." she said, clearly in a joking way to her, but it sounded almost serious to Peter. He brushed the comment off his mind and put his mask on. "Remember, were meeting at your place at 6:30, so be on-time."

"Hey, with the criminals and thugs that I've faced" he said, "that may not be completely up to me." He leaped onto the wall and sprinted up the wall. MJ watched on with a mild enthusiasm, still crazed that he could do that every time they went separate ways. Suddenly, he stopped when he reached the roof, only to then fall back down headfirst into the alley. He fired a web up toward the ledge he had leapt from, slowing his fall. He descended down slowly to Michelle's level, hanging upside down. "Did you forget something?" she said.

"Maybe..." he said like he was an innocent child. "What?" she replied.

"Come here and you'll find out."

"Ohh... I see now" she said and started walking toward his face. "You want me to give you a little treat before you go, huh?" She made her voice sound a very certain playful way, practically playing along with his mischievous idea. Peter nodded his head and smiled very cheekily underneath the mask. Michelle cups his cheeks and reached her fingers for the end of his mask. Peter can already start to feel a tingle go through him at her touch. "Is this what you were looking for?" she continues playfully, and Peter nods as she pulls his mask over his chin and past his lips. "Mmhmm" he hums. "Well then..." she leans in and Peter closes his eyes,  "you're going to have to wait for another time, sucker." She forces his mask back up and Peter laughs like the sucker he is. He thought it was a decent try, but he knew she wouldn't fall for something so corny and sappy.

"Well, at least I tried. See ya later!" he said and catapulted himself back up with the web his was hanging on. Michelle watched until he was out of sight. She smiled at his final comment, finding it cute a little.

"What a nerd... but I love that about him."

A/N- Hey guys. Hope everyone is all doing alright and I hope you guys enjoyed this chapter. I'm quite surprised how fast I was able to put this chapter together. I wrote it in two days, only spending two hours each day writing. I think I've just had this idea in mind for a decent amount of time that I just know what to do. I even joked that I just know how to write Spider-Man stories now. I don't know, what do you think?

ALSO, who else is shocked/excited/or some other reaction about Jamie Foxx returning to play Electro in Tom Holland's "Spider-Man 3?" Personally, I'm really excited mostly because Foxx is such an amazing talent and he wasn't given much room to work with the direction they took in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." So, I see this as Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Jon Watts and company giving Foxx a chance to really give us something special, something that all fans will enjoy. And for my preference, I don't think it will be the same Electro from that film. I think it will be a brand new version of the character, and I cant wait to see what they do with him. I have a few ideas of what they should do with him, so if you're interested, ask me about it.

Hope everyone enjoyed the chapter and that you'll leave a vote. Don't forget to express your thoughts in the comments as well. New chapter next month. Until next time, BYE!!!
