27. Rollercoasters and cotton candy

“I wanna go on the rollercoaster”, Jonah says and pouts.

“Honey, I know, but I can’t go with my leg and Harry doesn’t like rollercoasters. And you’re too young to go alone, I’m sorry, love.”

Jonah frowns. “I hate your stupid leg.”
I feel too sorry for him, I can’t see him that disappointed.

I pick him up and throw him over my shoulder. “Now, come on, I bet you’ll scream on the rollercoaster and I won’t!”

He giggles and boxes my back with his tiny fists, trying to get off my arm.

“Harry, let me go”, he shouts and laughs. I put him down on the floor and take his hand as we walk up the stairs to where the rollercoaster starts.

Jonah runs to stand under a little wooden dinosaur that determines how tall you have to be in order to be allowed to use the rollercoaster.

“Harry”, he shouts, “Look how tall I am. I can drive it.”

“That’s amazing”, I say, “But don’t complain if I throw up in the middle of the ride.”

He giggles and rolls his eyes. “Don’t be so dramatic. You can do it.”

“I hope so”, I mumble and follow him to the rather small queue. “Look”, he says and points to the screaming people, “I will not scream and I put my hands up. It doesn’t even have a looping.”

I laugh and ruffle through his hair before we walk to the arriving rollercoaster. “In the back”, he determines, “That’s the best daddy told me.”

I sit down next to him and pull down the restraints over him and me.

“I’m so excited”, he shouts and starts moving in his seat impatiently, “You’re the best for doing this with me, Hazzie!”

I grin and don’t have the time to reply anymore before we start moving up the hill backwards.

The rollercoaster stops at the top of the hill before we roll down forwards again.

Jonah really has the audacity to throw his arms into the air and giggle, fucking giggle, as if this was fun.

I cling onto the restraints, trying not to scream really embarrassingly.

“I hate rollercoasters”, I shout but Jonah just laughs even more, throwing his head back in excitement.

I smile. He’s adorable, the wind blowing through his hair, his eyes lighting up with joy and his hands in the air.

It takes ages until we finally arrive back at the start and I let out a relieved breath.

“You heard that?”, I ask Jonah, “I didn’t even scream.”

He laughs and nods. “But I’m braver, I had the hands in the air.”
“You’re the bravest.”

When our restraints are pulled up again, Jonah jumps out of the rollercoaster and runs towards Louis who’s waiting at the exit. He runs and hugs his legs, babbling excitedly.

“Harry didn’t even scream only that he hates rollercoasters but he didn’t scream like a little baby, he did rather okay”, Jonah explains and Louis laughs, looking at me with shining eyes.

“Thanks”, he whispers when I arrive at them, Jonah already looking at some carousel, “You’re the best.”

I grin and bend down to press a short kiss onto his mouth, smiling even more afterwards.
“No, really. You’re his hero.”

I blush and quickly shake my head. “Shut it, Lou, don’t want to hear this cheesy shit.”

He chuckles and leans his head against my chest. We turn quiet as we watch Jonah still looking at the carousel.

“Guess he wants to drive?”
Louis nods, sighing. “Last one for today, I do not have enough money for him to spend hours here.”

“I pay”, I say.
“No, Harry, you definitely won’t. I know we agreed you’d take care of Jonah but I am his legal guardian and I will pay for his stuff, you can’t afford to pay us all the time, you’re still in uni.”

I roll my eyes. “I earned money with the swimming lessons, will do some soon again.”

“I will pay for Jonah’s activities, end of discussion”, he says and then pouts. “Hope you won’t replace me with some other dad that gets into an accident.”

I laugh and kiss his hair once and pull him a little closer to me.

“Would never replace you two.”
He smiles. “I know.”

“Daddy, Hazzie”, Jonah shouts and waves, “Can I go?”
We walk up to him, Louis still slower because of his crutches.

“That’s the last one for today, alright?”, Louis asks and Jonah nods slowly.
“Okay.”

I help him get onto the elephant and he smiles proudly. “I think you can’t go on this one, you too tall for it.”

I nod. “I’ll leave you then, have fun honey.”

“Yeah. Always fun when it’s with you.” He signals for me to bend down to him so he can whisper something into my ear. “You make my daddy and me so happy.”

I just smile and have to turn away because I might actually maybe start crying because of this boy.

I walk back to Louis who bought the ticket for Jonah and quickly wipe away a small tear of happiness out of the corner of my eye.

I make them happy.

“Are you crying?”, Louis asks and I quickly shake my head.
“Nah.”

He chuckles and presses a kiss to my cheek. “Don’t be sad that you’re too tall for the carousel, Haz, you can draw some lots afterwards instead.”

I laugh and punch him into his upper arm softly. “Shut up, you idiot.”

And then I mumble, quieter: “Do I really make you happy?”

He smiles very lightly suddenly, nodding eagerly. “I haven’t been happier in years, Harry, you don’t even know how extremely lucky I am to have you. It feels so, so unreal that someone like you would choose me.”

My heart drops. It starts pumping way too fast, why would he say that?

“You dummy, you stupid idiot. Why would you choose me? Why would Jonah? Why would you just accept me like it’s nothing? I can only speak of luck, having ended up with you.”

He doesn’t smile, I can’t read the expression on his face, the glow in his eyes, all I know that it’s something special on his face, a way someone never looked at me before.

“I just can’t even express what I feel for you”, he mumbles and kisses me deeply.

I feel too much, butterflies, heart beating heavily, his body pressed to mine, his hands on his crutches but it’s enough anyways.

“Daddy, Hazzie”, Jonah shouts, waving and smiling.

I giggle, he looks adorable on the elephant, grinning proudly.

The drive ends shortly after and he keeps running towards us. “You dummies only kissed not looked at me.”

“I saw you anyway”, I lie, “You looked like a ranger on that elephant, so cool.”

He grins and nods proudly before he takes my hand and we walk towards the exit.

“Can I?”, he asks Louis with big eyes, when we pass the booth with cotton candy.
Louis rolls his eyes and sighs.

“Stop giving me those puppy eyes, you're so manipulative, you know I can’t resist them.”

Jonah giggles quietly. “Honey, you’re really using all my money, we’ll go broke.”

Jonah now doesn’t look so amused anymore but Louis quickly reassures him they won’t go broke so he smiles.

“I’ll buy it”, I say, “Then daddy will be consistent with saying the carousel would be the last station but you can have your cotton candy, how does that sound, huh?”

He nods excitedly and grins. “Yeah, look daddy, Hazzie does it for me so you don’t need to be not consistent.”

Louis rolls his eyes but smiles. “Harry really is spoiling you, isn’t he?”

Jonah just nods quietly and smiles happily when I hand him the too big candy just a minute later.

“Today was the best day.” He grins as we walk home, “Best day with my daddy and my Hazzie.”
