Prologue

It was a warm summer afternoon at the small elementary school of Arizona. The park was letting steam roll off the small sand mounds created by tiny hands. The monkey bars were too hot to climb, the slide would blister your butt as soon as you sat down, the only salvation was the shade structure and water fountain.

I had been sitting in the shade doing my best to avoid any day light that tried to touch me. I was by myself, at least I thought I was by myself, a small voice came from above my head.

Startled I glanced up to see two bright silver eyes looking down at me. It was a girl about my age. Ten or so. She had long white blond hair and a splash of freckles on her face.

"What are you doing up there?" I asked. She was perched on the edge of the bathroom roof beneath the shade of a tree.

"Hanging out." She said shrugging still looking down at me.

"Cool." I laughed looking around to see how she'd gotten up there.

"What's she doing up there?" A new voice piped up from behind me and two young boys stood with scooters looking up at the same girl I was.

"Don't know I'll ask." I smiled and turned back to the roof girl. "What are you really doing up there?"

"I told you I'm hanging out." She said eyeing the two boys suspiciously.

"Cool I want to climb up!" One of them dropped their scooter to the ground and ran over to the wall trying to jump and reach the top. He was a bigger build than the other one but they had the same jaw line and appeared to be somewhat related.

"That's not a good idea Ashton." The other said shifting nervously.

"Yeah there's no way you can get up here buddy only I know the secret." The girl said puffing out her chest with pride.

"It's not that hard." I said glancing at the surrounding area. There was a bench nearby not too far from where the wall was. Scurrying over I stood on the back of it on the very tips of my toes. My hands could just grasp the lips of the roof and with a grunt I tried to wiggle my way up.

My sneakers grated against the wall and I couldn't get any friction. Suddenly I planted my foot on something firm and pushed up onto the roof of the bathroom. Looking over the edge I saw the smaller boy smiling and giving me a thumbs up.

"Not bad." The blond girl said looking impressed.

"Ashton come here I'll help you up." The skinny kid suggested as Ashton came jogging over. He climbed up on the back of the bench as well and was boosted up by who I supposed was his brother.

He turned around and extended a hand to his brother and the three of us worked together to pull him up. Panting we all four sat down smiling like idiots.

"Guess it's not so secret." I smiled and the blond girl just rolled her eyes. We sat there for a while feeling like kings and looking down at the playground where other younger kids looked up at us in awe.

"No way you guys got up there!" Looking around I saw a girl with dark hair and skin looking up at us with an ice cream cone in her hand. The ice cream was melting and dripping down her fingers due to the heat.

She tapped the shoulder of another girl who was sitting and watching us shyly. "Did you see how they did it?"

She nodded and stood up, she was small and lithe, but of an athletic build and seemed to be one of those kids who did gymnastics. She had bright blonde hair and pale skin.

I don't know why I didn't expect her to know how to get up here, maybe it was because she seemed shy, quiet and reserved, but she must have been rather observant. She expertly stood on the bench and scrambled up the wall showing the other girl. The dark haired one followed close behind until six of us were all crowded on top.

"I liked it better when it was just me." The white haired girl grumbled and sat on the very edge kicking her legs.

"Sorry but this is so cool!" Ashton said standing up and looking around.

"It's like we're kings of the park." His brother agreed smiling.

"Kings can't get by without their queens losers." I laughed at the silver eyed girl.

"My name's James and this is my brother Ashton." So that's what his name was. James. It was a nice name plain but interesting at the same time.

"I'm uh Layla." The dark skinned adolescent smiled at me and the others, her cheeks seemed to have a permanent blush.

"I'm Max." Came the shy voice from the shy girl who sat with her knees tucked up to her chest her blue eyes seeming to pick out the smallest details regarding the rest of us.

"The name is Meghan my friends, but you all may call me Meg for short." She stood up from the edge and balanced giving us a bow. My instincts told me she would fall but she seemed at ease.

They all turned to me their eyes asking the question they had all answered. Standing up I didn't have as much flare as Meg. Instead I simply smiled. "My name is Reyna, Reyna Macalister."

They all nodded in approval and we sat on the roof of that bathroom until the sun started to set and we were the only ones left in that quaint little park. We only left when our parents one by one came and retrieved us.

It felt like the end of an era. Us six dominating the bathroom like the kings and queens we thought we were. But it didn't end there. We all happened to go to the same school and we spent years together. Up until I left. There had been a lot of tears and anger. Moving wasn't easy for any of us. Our happy little group of six was going to be split up.

Only now five years later I was coming back. Back to that same part of town, and that quaint little park, back to the people I left behind. I had no idea what to expect if they even still remembered me, and I had spent nights losing sleep over it. But it didn't matter now I was about to start my first week of Junior year back home, my real home, in my old neighborhood, the place that held my past.
