West side story in Prague review

Buenos días everyone!

Sorry, I promised this a week ago... but I was still sick after that and then I didn't have much time to write...

^above is the trailer to that. It was released by a czech agency that mediated the show here. It's world tour.

Photo of the stage before the first act:

Look at this from your phone, it has way better quality than on PC.

We had the second cheapest tickets. 1400 CZK, (I'm too lazy to find the exact currency, but it's always about 20 CZK for  1$ and 15 for £... okay, when it's crisis then over 30 lol), and
we had quite a good view, even thought we were on the balcony. Also this buddy helped me a lot everytime I wanted to see some details:

(I have no idea how to call it in English 😅😆)

So to the show.

I had no idea who was in the cast. I wanted to buy the... programme? (In Czech we call that thing programme, that paper magazine that includes the cast, a little bit of their CV and career and plot of the show...my English sucks a billion times tonight sorry) But when we get to the shop, it was already sold out. So that means I have absolutely
no idea who was in the cast! Shame on me! There was nowhere to be seen at least a poster of the actors names! That's what you get if Czech republic invites an original Broadway production to perform here. My country sucks.
According to the internet, Tony ("Anton" 😉) was played by Kevin Hack and Maria by Jenny Burson. Conducted by Donald Chan. However, the show was there for four days, so I have no idea if there was an understudy that evening.
The musical was nice. Yeah, not amazing, not bad and the word good is still not enough... so I'd say nice. I'm not sure if I would have enjoyed it more if I wasn't feeling so damn sick. (If they weren't selling tea at the bar outside, I wouldn't have survived it...)

The music hasn't impressed me, so no doubt that I'll stay faithful to ALW. I've only liked the biggest hits of that, "Maria", "Tonight", "America", "I feel pretty" and the song of the guys making fun of "Officer Krupke" (it reminded me of Skimbleshanks for I don't know what reason *shrugs*).

Now to the theatre- I' ve never seen this musical before, I only knew that it was inspired by Romeo and Juliet, and that the leading lady ' s name is Maria. So since I didn't have the programme, I knew nothing about the actual plot and since I am not English, I couldn't understand everything they were singing. At first, I thought they totally forgot about the board with Czech subtitles, and I thought "Of course, Czechs are saving as much money as they can, as always..." but then I looked a side from the stage and saw the board next to the stage, quite far from it , and everytime I looked at it, I lost a part of the dancing on the stage. Normally, it is ABOVE the stage, which is better. Also, I noticed that it wasn't a real translation, but only the lyrics of the Czech version of this show, and that is NOT a world-by-world translate. That sucked a lot. Like, for the first time in eternity a Broadway production comes to our country, and too lazy to put a real translation here? Like Wtf? My nation sucks. Ah, saying it for the 2 na time, sorry...

To the cast. They were all talented, but who really stole the show for me was the girl who played Anita. (If Evita stands for Eva, her real name should be Ana I'm guessing...?)
Not sure if it's caused by the personality of the character she was playing, but literally, she outshined everyone, even Maria and Tony at once!
I also noticed some very interesting people in the ensemble. There was this woman of color that had blonde hair! Okay, now, please don't take this as racism. I think you could see few glimpses of her in the trailer. I think it's a wig. It's so puffy and weird that it looks like a wig. If it was her choice to dye her hair, okay. But why the heck put a blonde wig on a brown girl? Her dancing was awesome, as the other's. I think african-americans are talented people, just look at Norm Lewis... I don't have anything against them! Please I'm not racist! I just think that blonde wig was weird on her, that's all!

The dancing- it was surprisingly the part of the show I enjoyed the most. I have to admit, the beginning kinda reminded me of Cats- all the acrobatic jumping and ballet like poses. 😆 And the dancing during "America" just HAS to inspire you to start stretching as soon as you get home because you want to dance like them! I didn't stretch until Monday thought, because I felt terrible.

The stage before second half. I wanted to shot the certain call, but I was too busy clapping and feeling bad from the cold so I forgot... I'm sorry.

Just to prove that I WAS there. Yeah, after the tea and under a ton of make - up, I didn't look that bad. I'm not trying to show up myself, just prove it.

To the souvenirs- so I wanted to buy the programme, but it was sold out already. I didn't want to buy a CD, because as I said before, not all the music impressed me. They were selling bags and shirts, but I thought they were ugly, so I bought a cup instead.

It was supposed to be blue, but it's purple 😅. I wanted a red one, but it was sold out (again). But the purple one is pretty too, at least the dancer has red dress LOL. I can watch her everytime I drink....

...enough extracting. Maybe you're asking- why did she went to that musical when she didn't like all the music?
Simple answer: It's a BROADWAY production. For those of you who live in NYC may it be like "So what?" But for me... I live in a small country in central Europe. Our productions of foreign musicals are terrible in my opinion (it's not like there are no talented people, there are, but it is mostly ruined by the translation , because Czech really doesn't fit, and also, only celebrities and people with famous/rich parents/friends are casted in the main cast... it's more complicated, in another chapter maybe...), I only saw Phantom on West End, and I doubt that I'll ever have the chance of seeing something on Broadway. I believe I WILL, but... come on, Broadway comes to this tiny republic, this nerd HAS to see it!😀😅😻😸

Especially when the Cats tour didn't even bother to go farther than to Germany. 😂

Enough complaining.

Good night!

Yours never - stopping - kvetch Czech friend

EvitaChristine
