The rough wind scrapes against my cheeks as I stumble through the frigid snowfall. I press my hands harshly against them, hoping to gain some warmth in either body parts. I continue to run, the footprints behind me laughing at my floundering movements as I gain more momentum. My breath runs faster; my eyes staring at the empty and forbidding air surrounding me.
Then, I hear it.
Fragments of laughter, followed by smiles so bright I can almost hear them. A small grin dances across my lips as I accelerate towards the noise.
Puffs of smoke begin to appear, accompanied by the wavering glow of a beacon in the distance. A wide grin beams onto my cheeks, urging my legs to move swiftly.
The petite cabin emerges from a clearing, the familiar warmth immediately encompassing my senses. My footsteps dwindle; my breaths shattering the muffled air neighboring the cabin. My shoes strike against the smooth stones beneath me, snow crunching underneath the soles.
I slowly raise my knuckles to knock against the door, only to rest my palm against the wooden panels. I pause, resting my head beside my hand, listening to the muted chatter from inside. The solid wood is unforgiving against my delicate skin. I glance at the window besides me, light and warmth radiating out into the world, for only a select few to experience. A silent smile brushes against my lips as I remember that I am a part of that warmth.
I bring my fist against that door, the sound piercing into the unrelenting night. The light chatter pauses for a moment as someone shifts from the conversation to my harsh knocking. Slight footsteps reach the door, and the handle turns, to reveal the warmth and light inside.
Smiles shine and chatter echoes softly. I can feel the fervor build up inside me as I am welcomed into the warmth and light, all memories of the frigid air and loneliness forgotten.
