Part #10

She was a girl with dark, chocolate brown skin, wavy hair as black as the night and beautiful emerald eyes. Her name was Harper.

Harper was one of those girls who sat quietly at the back of the class, trying to not draw attention to herself. She was industrious and studious. Harper wasn't antisocial, but she mostly kept to herself. She was friendly to everybody, yet she didn't really have anyone to call as a friend.

She tried to not case much disruption, did her best to be unnoticed. Harper studied much, never attended parties, and during lunchtime, breaks, and in between classes, she read books.

Anywhere you saw her, you could be assured she would have her nose in a book, ignoring everything and everyone.

She was like this for all of middle and most of high school, until the first day of 11th grade.

On the first day of 11th grade, a new student arrived. It was a girl with shoulder-length brown hair and freckles from Australia. She was named Jane. Jane wasn't really... Someone who cared for school much, as she constantly got low grades.

When she got to the classroom she introduced herself and got a seat in the exact middle of the room.

Since it was the first day they didn't do much so they chatted with their friends. Except, of course, Jane, who was new, and Harper, who was silently enjoying a large book.

Jane skipped over to her and said introduced herself.

Harper looked up after a second and greeted her with, "Hi there. I'm Harper." And she returned her attention to the book.

Jane followed Harper around the whole day trying to get to know her and then for a whole week. Harper didn't really enjoy her since she asked her several questions, much to her irritation.

On the Friday of that same week, Jane asked her, "Harper, why do you read so much?"

"Huh?" Said a slightly startled and pissed-off Harper

Jane took the book from her hands and read the title.

"Why do you read so much? You always have your nose in a book."

Harper's irritation suddenly disappeared. She laughed softly and then said, "I prefer books to reality. You should read one sometime."

They went to the library and she checked out a book for Jane.

"Jane, here. Read this, you'll like it. I promise." She said.

Jane wasn't one of those people who hated reading, but she wasn't one of those who like it either.

So during the weekend, Jane read the book. And she loved it.

She returned to school looking happy and checked out another book. And when she finished that one, she checked out another.

From that moment on, Jane and Harper would sit together just reading their books. To Jane, it was better because she found books funner than the real world. To Harper, it was nice to have some company for once.

Thanks to Jane, Harper became a bit more social and she started to attend parties. Thanks to Harper, Jane was able to pass her classes.
