Chapter Thirty Three
Word Count: 1665
¬Luella
I raise my hand, staring down at it.
I've been in another immortals head before, but this time, it's different, I can feel it. Instead of being able to see into his memories, I am in Revel's consciousness, able to control his body. Awkwardly, I move his limbs around under my control, feeling the strangeness, but also the power. Revel is a Sin, with power that is different to mine. I can feel is streaking through my veins.
Shaking myself off, I think, staring at my own body, which just stares back at me, void of consciousness. I can use this to my advantage for as long as I can, maybe even go speak to Death and find out her intentions without having to get into her mind.
I just have to do something with my body first.
Stepping forward, I lean down to awkwardly grapple with my own body, trying not to think too deeply into how strange this situation is.
Leaving my body in the room I came from, right atop the bed, I consider my next move. I don't know how long being in Revel's body will last, so I need to make the most of it. I'm going to go to Death, and hope she doesn't notice too much of a difference in Revel.
I find her by wandering endlessly through her home, admiring it as I walk. She has great taste, with her light and airy home, when I expected darkness and death to follow her in her daily life. She sits within a dining room, which I accidentally stumble into, breath flowing from this body at the sight of her, at the fear she elicits.
"Death," I say breathlessly, hardly thinking before I talk. She looks up from a book she was reading, frowning at the sight of me.
I'm just assuming from what Revel has told me that she likes him.
"Well, where is she?" Death questions, leaning backward in her chair. My throat goes dry, as I realise that she is talking about me, who should be in my real body. I could have gotten into Death's head instead, but I feel as though I can get more out of Revel.
"Still sleeping," I reply, surprised at the strange voice that comes from my mouth.
"I'm getting anxious waiting," Death admits, seeming none the wiser. She motions for me to come sit in the seat opposite her at the dining table, which I do so wordlessly. One step out of line, and she could realise that something is wrong with Revel. "You best be by my side when she wakes. I don't need her using her powers or anything."
"Do you know what they may be, yet?" I ask, curious myself to see how much knowledge these immortals have on me and what I can do.
"We've been through this before, Revel," Death mutters, rolling those strange grey eyes at me. My heartbeat falters, convinced I've just given myself up, and Death is going to have me killed. "No, we don't know what she is capable of."
"I just asked because you got to talk to her earlier," I say, hoping Revel knew this information. Death tilts her head, thankfully not looking too suspicious of me.
"She's weak, not intimidating at all. If she has power, she doesn't know it, so I suppose we don't have much to worry about," Death says dismissively, glancing back down at her book. I can't help but frown, not expecting to be called weak, after everything I've achieved with Thoughts magic that has been passed upon me. In some ways, mine is stronger.
I can't help myself. "She's not weak."
Death looks up from her book, narrowing her eyes.
"Is that right?"
"I mean, we shouldn't underestimate her," I say quickly, trying to recover myself. "What did Thought say?"
I'm curious about why Thought decided he could trust Death, and how much information he passed on to her. I want to be angry at him for bringing me here without me wanting it, and now, I may have walked straight into a trap. But I can't. I'm strong enough now to deal with them myself.
"Not much, as if he doesn't trust me, even though he handed his mate over to be with no hesitation," Death admits, sighing softly. She is troubled by it, but not allowing herself to get caught up. Now she will be even more cautious around me, no doubt/
"Strange..."
"Anyways, he will be here soon, anyway." I look up at her, eyes widening. He? That could mean anything, anyone. Is she bringing other immortals here to kill me? Is she going to sell me off to the other powerful immortals who want my powers?
"He?"
"Revel, we do not have time for you to be forgetful," Death comments, getting to her feet. I follow her, not wanting her out of my sight until I know what her plans are. It doesn't help when Revel is meant to know all this already. I could just get into Death's head...No, that's too dangerous.
I shake my head, desperate to have answers, but not to expose myself. "Right, sorry."
"This is seriously important. If he doesn't want to take this on, I will have to destroy my friendship with Thought," Death admits, looking oddly bothered by that idea. I know what that means; she is going to kill me, or have me killed by whoever this he is.
"That won't be good for anyone."
"Of course it won't, the rest of the immortals will hate me," she says. Her words gathering panic up within me. I need to contact Thought, yet at the same time, I want to deal with this myself. "But it's better than being dead, because someone's mate killed me. And you."
"Maybe we should have talked to her first, see where her head is at," I offer meekly. "That way we can decide whether she is a threat."
"Don't go soft on me now, Revel. I know you had a crush, but don't let that affect your judgment now," she mutters.
I frown, unable to hide my confusion. Revel had a crush on me? Maybe Death is just playing with his emotions, manipulating him, but the look in her eyes is slightly irritated, telling me it's unlikely she is lying. Suddenly being in Revel's body is extremely uncomfortable.
"I'm not-"
Death walks into the hallway, the dim light casting shadows across her sharp, pronounced features. "Even if she has good intentions, power like that should not exist. It puts all immortals at risk, and you know that."
Suddenly she pauses, her face paling. "What is it?"
"He's arrived," she announces.
With renewed vigour, she walks down the hallway, her long, satin dress flowing around her as she does so. I follow quickly, still uneasy at this height, on Revel's long legs. Whoever is here, I'm going to meet them as Revel, which is an unnerving Thought. It's been so long since I've been around him, so a lot of his mannerisms have escaped my mind.
"Refresh my memory..."
"Stace, a King from another realm. He has powers, and claims he can take away Luella's abilities without killing her," Death explains over her shoulder, sounding awfully reluctant on the not killing part. "And in return, she is out of my life, and hopefully I will have a good relationship with this very powerful man."
I don't have a chance to respond, as we walk into her impressive foyer, the light from outside flooding the polished stone flooring and ivory walls. With one brief gesture, Death has two men by the door pull it open, revealing a man who stands beyond it, hands shoved in his pants.
"Death. I've spent a long time waiting for us to meet," he says, his voice tinted with a foreign lilt that I've never heard in my life. His dark eyes shift to me. "You must be Revel."
I'm stunned into silence for a moment, unsure of what to do, what to say. I've never seen anyone like him in life, and knowing what he is here for is even more frightening. He has dark hair that falls to his brow, with eyes to match. His most striking features are the tattoos that creep up from his tunic, reaching just below his jawline, and slightly beyond. They aren't invasive, yet at a closer look, they practically seem to move and shift subtly, like they are alive.
I clear my throat awkwardly. "I am."
"Shall we skip the small talk?" he questions, clapping his hands together as his brows rise. "Who wants to take me to the girl."
I exchange glances with Death, knowing I need to be there to switch back into my body. It's the only way I can defend myself.
"I will," I volunteer.
Anxiously, I lead Stace toward where my unconscious body lies, unsure of what I'm going to say to him, or how I'm going to react. The moment I open the door, I allow my power to overcome me, until the flash of bright light appears, and when I open my eyes, I'm back inside my own body, starting up at Stace and Revel, who still doesn't have his consciousness back, remaining dazed and unmoving.
"Please, I know what they are planning. Please don't do this," I say immediately, getting to my feet to plead to Stace. "I won't hurt anyone, I promise."
He looks at me, taken aback by my sudden outburst.
"I'm not here to take away you powers," he murmurs, turning around to close the bedroom door. "I'm here to kill Death."
