Chapter 7

I helped Camelia to get back to her home after school. I managed to not get us lost. She unlocked the door and went inside.

"Your parents aren't there?" I asked.

"No, my dad works late, but my mom will come soon, if there's no complication at the hospital," the blind girl answered. We went upstairs, to her room. She closed the door behind us, and went on her bed, bringing her knees close to her chest. She looked like a cute little ball. Camelia closed her eyes and sighed.

"What is it?" I demanded.

"I just... I don't get what happened to Fabian," she whispered, "I had no idea..."

I sat beside her. It was hard to take. I knew that better than anyone. She was handling it pretty good, though.

"You can't know everything that happens in the head of other people," I answered softly.

"You are right." She paused. "Thanks again for your help, Des. I don't know what would have happened if you hadn't helped me out..."

"Don't think about the "if". What's important is that you are safe now."

"I thought... I thought Fabian liked me. I liked him. He is my best friend..."

"He was your best friend," I corrected. "But what is it anyway, to like someone?"

"What do you mean?"

"What is it, to love or like someone?" I started. "I saw some students at your school kissing each other, when the girl's secret wish was to be with another guy. Why were they even together, if they don't really love each other? What makes you sure that you love someone for real?

"I...I don't know," answered hesitantly Camelia.

"What? How come?" I was surprised. How could she not know? I understood that a Nightmare never felt love; it was normal, but humans are so full in emotions...

"Well, I've never really been in love. So I can't say for sure. But I think that when you love someone, you would do anything to protect your loved one. You also appreciate being in her or his company. And I liked Fabian, which means... ah, I don't know! They are feelings, you know! They can't really be explained! Only felt!"

"...I see." If it can't be explained by words... I knew the feeling of like, but love... It was so complex... Maybe if I...

"Can I kiss you?" I asked very seriously. The humans kissed when they loved someone, so maybe I would feel something by kissing her.

"What!" Camelia jerked back from me and blushed.

"Why not? Humans do it all the time," I replied.

"No, they don't! We only kiss someone we really love!" she almost screamed. What was wrong with her all of sudden?

"Is that a rule?" The human society was more complicated than I first thought.

"Well no, but..." she stuttered.

"Then there isn't a problem." I came closer to her and lifted her chin.

"Wait! What are you-"

I kissed her gently. It was... how can I put it? Interesting. But before I could really have a clear thought on the subject, Camelia pushed me back.

"What did you just do!" she screamed, red as a tomato. I lifted an eyebrow.

"Wasn't it obvious? I kissed you. And it wasn't bad, even if I am not in "love"."

"But... why..."

"Did you hate it?"

"Well, I...Huh..."

"So you liked it?"

"Don't you ever try something like that again!" she ordered fiercely.

"...Fine." I sighed. I wanted to learn more about humans, but how could I do that if Camelia doesn't help me?

Anyway, the day at school had been boring, but instructive. I had observed the behaviors of human teenagers, and what they mostly wished and feared.

"Camelia?" I started.

"Yeah?"

"Why aren't you more upset about Fabian?"

"I don't know myself. I know I should, but somehow... I feel okay with it. I think I have already been upset enough when I lost my sight, so this isn't so bad compared to it."

"You know what?" she continued. "I would like to know how you look."

"How do I do that?"

"You don't even know how you look?" she sighed. "You dummy. Just go see yourself in the mirror. There's one in the bathroom."

I followed her suggestion and found the mirror I had previously used as a portal. I looked at it. My reflection was reflected to me. So that's how I appeared to others! Appearance was never important for me, so I never wanted to know exactly how I was. And I had never used a mirror to see myself, only to go in my world. It was sure strange to see myself like that. I smiled, and the reflection smiled back. Was I good looking? I did not know. I was only myself.

I went back to Camelia's room after admiring my reflection some more.

"I'm back," I announced. Then I noticed that Camelia was talking to her mother, who had come back from work. I shut up, and listened to their conversation.

"Fabian called. He said he didn't want to help you anymore," said softly her mom.

"I know. He told me today." So she wasn't going to tell her mom about Fabian's attack. I wondered why.

"Really? Then I guess you have the week-end to find someone who will help you. Do you need some advice, or..."

"Don't worry mom, I'll work on it. I'll find someone for Monday."

"Great." Mrs. Osborn sighed of relief. "I am so lucky to have a courageous daughter like you..." she complimented as she hugged Camelia, "I'm so sorry for yelling at you yesterday... the day at the hospital had been pretty rough and..."

"It's all forgotten," assured Camelia with a smile. Her mother returned the smile and went out the room.

"Des?" she asked. "So what do you look like?"

"Well, I have long black hair, dark eyes, hard traits... You know what? It would be easier to show you in a dream."

"You can do that?"

"Sure! I create dreams, remember?" I usually created nightmares, but I could do dreams too. But it was often a waste of time because I couldn't collect the "happy" emotions that the human was feeling.

"Okay then." She laid down on her bed. "I'll probably eat in an hour or so, so what do you want to do?"

"I don't know...What do you do in your free time?"

"Hm. I do homework and assignments, but since it's the week-end tomorrow, I don't have anything school thing to do... I also like to read, and I used to draw a lot."

"You drew? Were you good at it?"

"I guess..."

"Can I see some of your drawings? I saw a guy drawing in your class, he was pretty talented." I avoided talking about the fact that I returned his drawing, probably causing an unexplainable mystery. I did not know if Camelia liked that I interfered in human lives.

"Hum, I'm not sure about that..."

"Why not?"

"I... Just... It's that I can't draw anymore. It's... painful to be remembered," she said softly.

"Oh. I won't say a word then, just look at them," I tried to convince her.

"...Fine..." Camelia sighed. They're in a box near my bookshelf."

I followed her indications and easily found the box. I opened it: it was full of papers, sketched or full drawings. It was beautiful. She was really good at this. My favorite was a midnight sky, drawn with different tones of black and grey. I wanted to compliment her, but I remembered what I promised and didn't say a word. I replaced the sheets in the box and sat beside Camelia, on her bed. There wasn't really any other place to sit.

"Are you done?" she asked.

"Yep."

"I thought about something..."she started. "Would you mind reading me a book?"

"No, as long as you choose a good one, or I'll get bored."

"Okay. Then take the book named Harry Potter." I did as she told me, but...

"Which one? There's like ten of them."

"The first, of course. And there are only seven of them." So I took the first book and sat back next to her. And started reading out loud.

To my surprise, it was really good, and I got so caught up in the story that I jumped when Camelia's mother came in to tell her supper was ready.

It was the first time that I was scared by a human.
