Chapter 26:
PEETA
I sat next to Katniss in the kitchen, eating my food hungrily. I hadn't really had a full meal since that salad yesterday, and I was hungry.
I looked at Katniss, taking in her beauty, overjoyed that we were back together again. With her gone it had felt like there was part of me missing, and I needed her to feel whole again. Now she sat next to me, a smile on her face.
"Hey Peeta," She said, looking up from her plate. "I was thinking that maybe we could go back to Four. Ya know since last time kind of ended...badly, I thought maybe we could catch up with Annie and Finnick again."
"Okay!" I said. "Yeah I'll go call them and see if we can visit again for a little." I said, standing up.
I called them, and was greeted by Annie's cheerful voice. "Hey Annie, it's Peeta." I said.
"Hi Peeta! How are you and Katniss? Are the babies okay? Did something happen?" She rambles, and I chuckle lightly.
"Yeah me and Katniss, and the babies are okay. Well, now we are at least...but that's a conversation for later." I reassured her. "Anyways, we were wondering if maybe we could visit you in Four again?" I asked.
"Oh, of course! I can't wait to see you guys! I think you can get a train today in a couple of hours if you want to come today." She said excitedly.
"Okay, thanks Annie. Tell Finnick I said hello!" I said.
"I will. Bye!" She said, and I hung up, walking back to tell Katniss.
"Hey Peeta."She said with a smile. "What'd she say?" She questioned.
"She told me that we could come today if we wanted because there's a train that we could go on. We just need to pack and then we should be able to leave in a couple of hours." I explained.
Katniss grinned and went to her room to start packing, excited to see Annie and Finnick again. I followed her to pack my own bag too.
I entered her room, and got my bag, filling it with clothes and everything I would need.
"I can't wait to see Annie and Finnick." Katniss said, turning towards me.
"Yeah, me too."I said with a smile, closing the space between us and softly kissing her while a smile spread across her face.
"What was that for? She asked.
"Because you're beautiful." I said, making her blush. We stayed like that for maybe an hour, just being together and talking, enjoying each other's company.
Soon enough, I realized that we should probably head to the train station if we wanted to get to Four on time. We said goodbye to Katniss's parents, telling them that we would be in Four for a little.
We got to the train station, maneuvering through the crowded mass of people. After getting on the train, we settled into our seats. I let Katniss sit by the window, as I knew she liked to watch the scenery that we passed.
She leaned her head on my shoulder, and I closed my eyes. I must have fallen asleep because the next thing I know, I could see glimpses of the beautiful ocean.
"Hey sleepyhead." Katniss said with a playful smirk. "They said we have about 10 minutes til we get there." She explained.
"Okay." I said. I turned my gaze back to the window, peering over Katniss's head to get a better look at the ocean. The bright afternoon sun was glaring down onto the water, causing it to look like it was glowing as the fierce waves crashed down upon the shore.
I felt the train slowly come to a stop, and I heard a man's voice come through the train. "Thank you for riding with us today. Welcome to District Four!" He said.
Katniss and I stood up, making sure to get our bags before we got off the train. We looked through the sea of people departing from the train, searching for the familiar faces of Annie and Finnick.
"They said that they would meet us here." Katniss said.
"Yeah, there's a lot of people though let's keep looking." After looking a little more, we found them next to an old bench pushed against the wall of the station.
"Annie! Finnick!" Katniss exclaimed, rushing up to greet them.
"Hey guys!" Finnick said, a smile forming on his suntanned face.
"Katniss! How are you? I missed you and Peeta!" Annie said excitedly.
"We're good. I missed you too!" Katniss replied.
"Well, we should probably get going if we want to get down to the ocean before sunset."Finnick said.
I could see Katniss's face light up beside me, desperately wanting to see the sunset over the ocean. I laughed, and we went to Annie and Finnick's house.
"So, how has everything been in Twelve?" Finnick asked lightly, unaware of the troubles that had occurred since we had left Four last time.
I glanced at Katniss before answering, not wanting to make her upset. She gave a slight nod letting me know it was okay.
"Well...it's actually been kinda bad. T-the, uh, Bakery burnt down," I said, almost feeling tears start to burn behind my eyes, thinking of how my whole life had been in that Bakery. "And then there was a bit of an....incident with Kat and the babies." I said, not wanting to get into details about Gale.
Annie looked worried. "Oh no! What happened?" She asked nervously.
Katniss had a look in her eyes, like a storm was brewing behind them, a fierce cloudy gray of pain and bad memories put there by Gale and the Bakery burning, and Prim dying. Her emotions were splayed across her face, and I could see her thinking things, then trying to stop before all of the bad memories took over. I wanted to hold her, tell her that we were okay right now, that we always would be, but I couldn't promise that to her even though I wanted to. Then her face hardened, a simple smile overtaking the sad frown, and her eyes lighting up, pushing past all of the hurt.
I shook my head to Annie. "It's not important right now. I'll tell you later." I said, and Annie nodded, understanding.
Soon, we were at Finnick and Annie's house, and we were rushing to get out bags unpacked so we could get down to the beach for sunset.
I shoved all my stuff into a cramped closet, and Katniss laughed at my sloppy and hurried behavior.
I grinned at her. "What? I'm just trying to speed things up so we can go to the beach," I said, throwing one of my shirts at her.
She caught it, joy dancing in her eyes. "Well, you're gonna have to clean that up later," She said, nodding towards the mess of my closet.
"Yes, that is exactly what I'm going to do. Later. But right now I'm going to the beach!" I said, sliding on my shoes and getting ready to go up the stairs.
Katniss laughed again, and joined me as we walked up the stairs quickly. We met Finnick and Annie at the top of them, and began the short walk to the beach, the sun already starting to set, casting a warm glow of light over everything.
"How have you and Annie been lately?" Katniss asked Finnick as we neared closer to the sandy shore.
"Pretty good, haven't we babe?" Finnick said, nudging Annie with his shoulder as she smiled, blushing. Seeing them like that drew a smile to my face, and I let the peaceful atmosphere of the night envelop me, letting all of my troubles momentarily drop away. I laced my fingers through Katniss's squeezing her hand lightly, three times in a row like I was silently saying I love you. And she did it back four times. I love you too.
We ran into the ocean, its gentle waves embracing us like we were hugging an old friend. Katniss splashed me, a laugh bubbling out of her, and we played in the water like that for a while with Finnick and Annie.
We stepped onto the soft sand later, and I felt it seep through the space between my toes, partially burying them in the sand. I walked up to the part of the sand that wasn't completely wet, but close enough to the waves that they would run up against my feet before being pulled back to join the wide sea.
I sat down and Annie, Finnick, and Katniss sat beside me, Katniss leaning her head on my shoulder.
"You guys are so lucky that you get to see this every day," Katniss said to Finnick and Annie, talking about the sunset.
"Yeah, but I feel like we take it for granted. You feel something so special when you see it, but to us it's just another part of our everyday lives," Annie replied.
Katniss thought for a second before answering. "But you still find the beauty in it don't you? You still probably look at it every day, and think Wow. That's really amazing. You still feel something special, just a different kind of special," She said with a smile.
Annie looked at Katniss, a small smile on her face. "Yeah, I guess you're right," Annie replied.
Finnick stood up, dragging Annie to the ocean with him, a playful smirk on his face as Annie laughed.
"They are a really good couple," Katniss said with a laugh.
"Yep. And so are we,'' I said with a smile.
"Obviously," She replied.
In that moment, with the glaringly bright orange sun setting over the swirling ocean water, I looked to Katniss. The sun's light was shining directly on her face, accentuating all of her perfect features, and she closed her eyes with a calm smile settling on her face. I leaned into her, kissing her fiercely, her lips tasting of the ocean's salty water. I felt the waves lapping up against my leg, but I ignored them. I pulled away, and she looked at me, a dreamy look in her eyes.
"What was that for?" She questioned softly, her cheeks flushed a soft pink.
"Because you're beautiful. You are the most beautiful person I have ever met and I love you," I said and she laughed.
"What? It's true." I said.
"Well, thank you. You are also the most beautiful person ever," She said with a chuckle, laying her head in my lap, watching the sun slowly set over the rippling ocean water before it disappeared, replaced by millions of bright pinpricks of light. Stars. There were so many stars. I marveled at the sheer quantity of them, clustered together in the inky black sky.
Katniss and I stayed like that until we had to leave, Finnick and Annie walked up to us, their clothes soaked wet from the ocean. Both had beaming smiles on their faces.
"Looks like the LoveBirds are on their way to something more. A kiss like that leads to something else," Finnick said with a smirk. "You were really going at it."
Katniss blushed. "Finnick!" She said, laughing as she gently shoved him.
Finnick grinned, and we all talked and laughed as we went back to Finnick and Annie's place.
"So, what do you want to do tomorrow?" Annie asked us.
"I don't know really," I said.
"We can figure it out in the morning okay?" She replied as we opened the door to their house.
"Okay!" Katniss replied cheerfully. She yawned, and we realized that it was pretty late now.
"I think we're going to head to bed," I said.
"Okay. Don't get to naughty." FInnick said with a wink, which was followed by Annie groaning and smacking him on the arm.
"Finnick, why do you have to be like this all the time?" She asked.
"Don't question my ways. I did get you to marry me didn't I?" He said kissing her quickly as she rolled her eyes, but smiled nonetheless.
I laughed and Katniss and I went downstairs, putting on pajamas and flopping down onto the bed exhausted.
I felt Katniss snuggle into me, her arm wrapped around me as I heard her breaths steadily getting heavier as she fell asleep. I drifted into sleep with thoughts of Katniss in my dreams.
