Face to face
SCARLETT PARKED HER BIKE IN THE RACK IN front of Thatcher's sweets, and slowly but, surely reached in her bag to retrieve the lock she always used to keep it in place. Her parents had petitioned to get it built in front of their store just for Scarlett, and when it did, the two of them were probably happier than she was. It was times like those she absolutely loved everything about her parents.
It was times like these, when they were forcing her to come work that she disliked them just a little.
"Okay, you can do this." Scarlett inhaled a sharp breath and put on her signature bright smile. It had been weeks since she came here, and while she loved all things sweets, she mostly avoided coming because she didn't want to see anyone.
Besides The Mystic Grill, Thatchers Sweets was one of the most popular hot spots in Mystic Falls, meaning, everyone in town came.
Including her friends who she quite frankly had no emotional energy to see.
Holding tightly onto the sleeves of her button up shirt, the girl made her way into the building, greeted with a full house of tables, every seat filled. Besides that, she did her best not to look at exactly who was here. She kept her eyes forward, and let out a sigh of relief upon reaching the counter where her father stood explaining all the options they had out for sale.
"Hi, Pop." She greeted as the customers busied themselves staring at the food case, contemplating what to order. "Where's mom?"
"She's icing some cupcakes, she wants you in the front today." Jacob reached back slightly, and handed his daughter an apron with their logo on the front. "Make sure all the tables are taken care of."
The worst possible job in the whole place.
"Really?" Scarlett pouted slightly, then looked out into the crowd, and noticed one of the people she for sure didn't want to see. "Dad, he's here, I can't talk to him right now. Please let me do something else."
"Your moms the boss." Jacob squeezed his daughters shoulder lightly. "and he's been here every day since you guys stopped hanging out."
The Thatcher man walked a few feet away to take care of the customers standing there, leaving his daughter to suck it up and start to work. She braced herself before walking over to the table Matt was sitting at the table with a cupcake, and cup of coffee. She let out a sigh, and the boy looked up from the book he was reading, smiling upon seeing her.
"Hey, Scar." He spoke, closing up the book. "Long time no see."
"Yeah." Scarlett replied, her hands shaking slightly as she placed one on her hip. "You read now?"
"Only for school. They gave me a summer reading list, and I didn't bother to go through any of it until a few weeks ago." Matt cleared his throat lightly, the pair finally making eye contact. "How have you been?"
"I've been fine." The Thatcher girl replied, clearly lying.
If the Donovan boy knew anyone, it was Scarlett Thatcher, and he knew she was full of it the moment the word "fine" escaped from her lips.
"I've missed you." The blonde boy admitted, leaning forward in his seat. "I don't know what happened between us... I mean, I don't know if I did something wrong but maybe we can talk about it—"
"I kinda have to get back to working but, i'll see you at school tomorrow, okay?" Scarlett smiled at him, holding back tears before she turned away, not letting the boy utter another word.
Oh how dearly she missed him.
